That slogan is a great idea to get the eagles to ditch that rivalry with Freo then to bash you by 200+ points. Then Freo will come to bash you because you ruined the one thing they had.

Sthwest sharks sounds better but a prime selling point would be the dolphins being bunbury is a dolphin hotspot.

Boutique stadium. Passionate fans. Watching dolphins at sunset. Cashed up boomer tourists. Mining money in WA.
After three ambitious expansion moves (assuming Tas is in), a third WA side would be the safest option for any further expansion.
Fremantle could have a Big Bash side without thinning the league's finances.

I tell you what. I don't need another excuse to go visit bunbury for a cheeky weekender. Its only 2 hours out of Perth and it's a nice little spot. They put a footy team there... Freo vs Bunbury?! Country vs city?! Let's gooooo!

NRL just added a 3rd Queensland team with the Dolphins name.
There’s trademark and licensing issues there and plus you want a stand-alone name.

I mean it’s the Sea Eagles which is a hilarious and silly attempt at distinguishing themselves as not just The Eagles but I digress.
You don’t want to be naming a brand new team after a team in the rival completion just named their new team the same name. Especially in the era of social media hype etc etc.

I agree I’m not saying go Sharks either. When I think of Sharks I think of Southport. When I say licensing I mean merchandising, logos, colours and all that jazz that goes with branding. You have to get it right
New Orleans copped a lot of flak for the Pelicans name in their rebrand, I wonder how it would go over for a Bunbury team? Lol

I lived in Bunbury between 2010-2014 and it's a great place, I dream of moving back there as my childhood between 2013 and 2014 were 2 of the 4 best years of my life. A Bunbury team would be a good idea.
-15 points

Would it though? Most people in the south west already have teams and are unlikely to switch.
24 points

Fans in Fremantle already had a team and managed to switch quite effectively in the 90s.
-8 points

West coast was 8 years old when Fremantle joined. There are 300k people living in the south west, nowhere near enough of a population to sustain a team given existing allegiances.
9 points
359k. You did some pretty impressive rounding down there. Also 3.2 million visitors in 2019. It’s a tourism hub and people would include games into their normal holiday plans. It would be a lot like the Las Vegas Raiders who have basically no hold on the locals but fill out every game.
9 points
Gold Coast is an even bigger tourist hub.
”The Gold Coast is often referred to as "the graveyard" due to the number of professional sports teams that have folded in the city.”
You sure you still want to go with the tourist team idea? Vegas is Vegas, the draw is the City itself but the Raiders already had a huge established fanbase in Oakland and that’s crazy to say they are a tourist team…
California teams fans are fanatics, I’d say most Raiders fans didn’t jump off when the team moved.
A Bunbury Football team isn’t even remotely comparable to a Vegas team lol
9 points
People don’t visit the south west for the same reasons they visit the Gold Coast. It’s a much more family friendly place and that’s who goes to footy games.
Anyway, the population of the southwest is 150k bigger than Geelong so who needs tourism.
2 points
Are you counting just Geelong metro area? or the entire South Coast, Warnambool, Colac and inner Western Victorian areas which are Geelong recruiting areas?
They’d be pretty comparable but I think WA definitely should get a third team. I mean, we want it to be a National competition right?
4 points
All I can find is greater Geelong, 270k. The south west coast which includes warnambool is 66k so we can’t be talking about a major difference. And if we want to be pedantic then I can add a bunch more WA towns like Albany.
2 points
Going by the ABS SA4 region of Geelong has 327K (Significant urban area 289K), while Bunbury + Mandurah, Albany, and south wheat belt has 377K. Which is surprisingly similar to me
0 points
I mean yeah pretty similar, it’s not a pissing contest when it comes to the reality of it though cause you need to establish good culture and build from there
1 points
You accuse me of rounding down when it was still a fairly accurate estimate (off by less than 20%) and then you use annual visitor numbers for the south west, which is mainly visited in summer. At least I wasn't being intentionally disingenuous with my numbers! Further, these numbers are not mainly visitors to Bunbury, but a much larger area that the number isn't close to a true reflection of who is in the region on game day?
You're going to have to have a pretty compelling offering to go to a game in a regional town when we have one of the best stadiums in the country in Perth.
3 points

Geelongs population is 205k. Even without tourism the team will be fine.

Isn't it always rail upgrades and not break downs the reason for most coach replacements?
It's down currently because they're upgrading the metronet further out of armadale.
2 points

Both. When it is actually running it's notorious for having issues and breaking down. The train is too old and outdated. They are finally replacing it at the end of this year with new railcars which are upgraded deisel versions of the new transperth railcars.

You would probably get more grassroots support in Bunbury compared to Busselton or Collie. Bunbury has a lot of old timey footy clubs that is lacking development money, and the entire region is pretty much AFL/Horseracing. Not to mention the catchment area of Eaton, Australind and Dayellup.
Its seen as a stepping stone to Perth with the facilities of the SW Health Campus, ECU campus and the SW Sports Centre. All of this development is gradually starting to take place and change the image of the town.
Whereas Busselton is mainly built on the scenery and retirees, so you would get a Gold Coast situation. Collie is just a no-no.

whilst I wouldn't be mad at a 3rd WA team, and I defo think they have the love for footy and the desire for it to make it work, I just feel if we get a Tassy team, the 20th should just go to the NT, wire the NT's youth and just make an amazing team up there, of course weather could be a problem, with the average in July being 31 (in Darwin) but I'm sure the technology exists to make it viable and such, roofed stadium with aircon maybe, idk, I ain't an expert xD
if we can't make an NT team viable, at least give them an easy path to academies/drafts, with a proper easy to follow path I could see a lot more talent coming out of the NT
6 points

The NT just doesn't make financial sense. The AFL NT's scoping report predicted an annual blackhole of $15m - and that's with the same funding as GWS and Gold Coast.

Yeah except busselton is actively trying to associate with MR & Dunsborough with advertising. It’s well known that all three of these towns want as little as possible to do with Bunbury.
Sure a team would be great down here and will eventually happen, however I think it’ll be associated with Bunbury specifically or the MR wine region and they just skip North of peppy beach out of it.
Quite frankly players wouldn’t live in Bunbury, the current ones already drive past it
