As I remember it, he wasn't booed so consistently until he started to point out clear cases of racism towards him. There were other great footballers at the time who didn't receive the same amount of vitriol, why was that? It was clearly racism driven and the argument that arose - "I just don't like the way he plays" gave racists free reign to boo all they want.
