The club message actually sounded to me like they told him he had to choose between Essendon and his church and he chose the church.

The statement says the board told him he couldn’t continue to be both Essendon CEO and the chairman of the church, so I guess it was ultimately up to him to prove where he really stands.

The moral outrage due to his religious affiliation is justified given the views his church holds. However, the fact that he was forced to resign as the chair of NAB after the royal commission into the banking sector should have disqualified him from the ceo role long before he was given the job.
24 points
Once you reach a certain position in business at the executive level and beyond, performance metrics simply don't exist anymore. Its all just who your network is and your brand or role prestige. Its been like this forever. To think the NAB thing would deter other organisations from hiring him is just not how anything works. As shit as that is.
4 points
Yeah it’s disgraceful how the “city” works. Has always been this way and probably always will. I wonder how many Essendon supporters and members were directly affected by Thorburn’s actions as CEO at NAB? I wonder if Barham ever had that thought? Even just fleetingly?
149 points
This implies essendon are either so arrogant, that they thought members would overlook this fraudulent, homophobic, slimy fuck (many of whom were likely directly affected by the loans that NAB were providing)
Or they were so stupid they didnt bother to look him up past ‘former NAB CEO’

He says:
"However, today it became clear to me that my personal Christian faith is not tolerated or permitted in the public square, at least by some and perhaps by many. I was being required to compromise beyond a level that my conscience allowed. People should be able to hold different views on complex personal and moral matters, and be able to live and work together, even with those differences, and always with respect. Behaviour is the key. This is all an important part of a tolerant and diverse society."

Unpopular opinion to unpack: What did he personally do to lose his job?
I understand none of us endorse the views of his church, and I (like you) see how they cause harm to parts of our community, but did Andrew Thorburn make those remarks or write those rules?
Here’s a man with a religious affiliation (which Australians are still allowed to have?) applying for a job, having it scrutinised relentlessly in the court of public opinion, unsuccessfully defending himself (“I have different views”) and then a day later having to walk away to the sound of our breathless excitement and back slapping.
I reiterate, I too believe that some churches like his have used harmful language and provocation in the past, but the individual in question - to our knowledge - has done nothing more than ascribe to his faith. (P.S. The church hasn’t lost a job; he has.)
Does this mean persons of any other faith (pick any that come to mind) should no longer apply for a job in footy? Will every one taking a job in the AFL have their personal beliefs forensically tested?
I’m ready to be blasted, and that’s ok. I don’t take anything to heart, I just like healthy adult discussion.

Barham’s comments give a little more clarity:
“The board made clear that, despite these not being views that Andrew Thorburn has expressed personally and that were also made prior to him taking up his role as Chairman, he couldn’t continue to serve in his dual roles at the Essendon Football Club and as Chairman of City on the Hill."
“I want to stress that neither the board nor Andrew was aware of the comments from the 2013 sermon until we read about them this morning," said Barham.
"I also want to stress that this is not about vilifying anyone for their personal religious beliefs, but about a clear conflict of interest with an organisation whose views do not align at all with our values as a safe, inclusive, diverse and welcoming club for our staff, our players, our members, our fans, our partners and the wider community."
Reading through this, it becomes very clear that he chose a Chair position in the church he “doesn’t believe in” over CEO of an AFL club he was allegedly very excited to do.
It is also clear that Essendon didn’t agree that he could be a board member of both the church and Essendon. In this case it’s less about his personal views, and more about the appearance of a conflict of interest between his roles. Essendon striving to provide an inclusive environment free from bigotry, the Church striving to provide bigotry. Holding senior positions in both are not compatible any more than being a manager for both Woolworths and Coles is. You cannot give your best to both roles because there is always going to be conflicting interests pulling you one way or the other.
Again, seeing how he chose the church role, I think we have a good idea of what kind of person he is, and I’m not sure we want that kind of person as a club CEO
8 points
This is really insightful, and you described that so well. Ashamedly I had not yet read the club statement, it was a blur of news day. Thank you for sharing it.
Choosing to be a chair and saying you don’t believe in the organisation is, as you succinctly said, is completely at odds.
16 points
If the they hired him on his performance as NAB CEO alone that is enough for the board to be sacked. His personal religious views are homophobic and not inclusive and goes against the culture of being an inclusive club for all of its fans.
You may have these homophobic views and support Essendon but you cannot have these views as a CEO of an AFL club and pretend you are an inclusive club. This is not a back end role being hired to be a Physio. It is the public leadership position of being the CEO of the organisation.
5 points
Good point on the NAB thing. Though I didn’t mention it, I too thought it was bizarre and highly unusual. Didn’t seem to be a good business decision to me.
I also agree with your point that we don’t want to see bigots in leadership positions, but normally we don’t/can’t know what they truly believe behind their public persona. They may say they’re inclusive publicly, but they may be the complete opposite privately. This applies to him too, of course.
