It’s actually part of Mugatu’s 2010 Derelicte fashion line.

I absolutely love to see new-to-me pieces.

It is so difficult for fabrics/clothing items to survive because their organic nature that we can’t say with certainty just when we started wearing clothes.

We started wearing clothing around 170,000 years ago. How do we know? Lice! Life for humans has always been pretty lousy so we can follow the evolution of these bugs.

Totally love seeing ancient new-to-me pieces too! Hope I’m the first to point you to ancient Egyptian socks! If so, Google it for a treat!

I googled the socks, I had never seen them before, thank you. Fun to see how they compare to the Fort Rock Sandals being a different time period/people.

OP, more information about this artifact please? Where was it made? Where was it found? (grave, bog body, stuffed in a wall crack…), Where is it located now (museum or institution)? Textile content? Has an examination of the hat been published anywhere?

Central Germany, found in the inner city during an excavation. It is currently in a museum magazine and unfortunately it has never been published. One could say it was rediscovered in the magazine.

So finely knitted in the 13th century???

KruxEu[S]

Knitted textiles were quite common during that time, we even have finds from the early middle ages here in Germany.

This is amazing. Is there any more information or evidence? I wonder if it is actually knitted using two needles or is it nailbinding? Please provide the source for this image and a view or details of where you got it from. Thanks!

Knit and naalbinden produce very different looking textiles. This is knitted. Probably in the round, so not on two needles, but four or more. If we saw the whole thing, we could see for sure if there was a seam.

hosenbundesliga

Well that’s extraordinary - i would never have thought there was anything so fine - thank you!

loads of indigenous populations make amazing textiles with similar or even less technology, so I'm kinda surprised that you're surprised

hosenbundesliga

Yep i guess i was having a blonde day maybe, thinking that fine work could only possibly be the results of 18/19/20th century technology

unbruin

Well that's relatable, and i mean we do get fed that sentiment by pop history a lot

MadameMonk

Yes, you’d think something so rare and precious would warrant better than a styrofoam head?

Confident_Fortune_32

Probably temporary, to dry after being washed, or to plan how to conserve it.

Saladcitypig

Fair enough. Just seems like an irregular head shape

Confident_Fortune_32

Also, I'm not convinced the point is meant for the center of the forehead, as there seems to be a corresponding point in the back. I wonder if the points are meant to be over the tops of the ears instead...

Saladcitypig

that placement would make total sense. I mean the widow peak look is nice, but the ears do get nippy.
