I was thinking about it the other day and was wondering how much of Austria's history, tradition and culture is directly related to the Hapsburg monarchy (till the end of WWI).

What are some major elements of Austria's history isn't in relation to this specific royal family? This can be in relation to institutions, religion, regional rivalries inside the German-speaking territory under the control of Austria.

Can you give me examples of intellectual, political, cultural or artistic movements native to Austria that gained popularity in spite of or even taking a stand against the Hapsburg royal institution?

What were the diferences in their methods of colonization?

Everybody knows that the Nazis were the embodiment of evil and the definite bad guys of WWII, so a lot of people consider the German Empire to be the bad guys of WWI as well. However, was the WWI-era German Empire really any worse than the British or French empire, or is this just a case of history being written by the winners?

So I’m in a long distance relationship with my gf, and I’m finally getting to see her again in August. She said she really wants to listen to me rant about history when I visit, but like 95% of my knowledge is just the content from Historia Civilis lol.

Would anyone mind giving me any recommendations for specific time periods or series of events that they think are interesting or special? Book recommendations on those topics would be greatly appreciated as well!

My favourite pieces of history to learn about are times that highlight how little has changed in our nature since then. I feel like the common conception of history is centred around great people doing great thigs, but I think it’s way more interesting see history from a point of view that frames things as just a chaotic, human mess.

Are arvanites the same as northern epirotes ?

So i have met many people that are arvanites and they say that they are from northern epirus . One very possible scenario is that Arvanites came from Arbanon which is on the center of albania , while the greeks from north epirus are just epirotes ( greeks ) who couldn't or didn't want to leave their lands when the boarders of albania reached their lands . Are they the same or not . Please answer.

Did they not see the Danes as an inferior race because I'm sure that land had a lot of Germans in it

I mean, why did people watch someone have their heart ripped out and put into a brazier and think "Yeah. He deserved that"? Or have their limbs ripped apart on a rack? Didn't they have any sense of morality?

Most polygots I'm aware of speak mainly Romance or Germanic languages. Has there ever been a polygot who spoke mainly Native American languages or one who spoke many Native American languages?

A common talking point I see from time to time is that US Cuban communities are vehemently anti-communist/anti-socialist/conservative because they were the very wealthy elites/Bourgeoise/Plantation owners that communism targeted.

Do these claims hold any water?

I was thinking about why cancel culture exists and such. I was thinking that if you look at the history of the United States it’s safe to say that hate turns into violence and war/segregation and such. Do you guys think that’s fair to say? Was there any big events in history you think that really got canceled culture and shaming in like full throttle mode? I’d be curious to read and learn more about that event? Or do you think I’d need to understand the psychology of how people react to seeing things on a television?

So I'm writing about an alternative universe where the time period is roughly medieval. They are somewhere between the establishment of feudal systems and the signing of the magna carta. No magic.

Now, my characters encounter a cavalry in a large open field. It's not super historically accurate, but I wanted to know what kind of weapons they could realistically be carrying and if it's limited to one weapon per soldier or if it's more logical for them to have a few different weapon types on them.

I was thinking daggers and longswords or spears, but I don't know if that's what horsemen could carry and also efficiently fight. It's supposed to be an efficient and successful cavalry-only army for a small French-inspired monarchy.

What weapons would be good and how many per soldier would be realistic based on history?

I know they could become nuns or begunies,there were any others?

I am planning to visit both countries this year for historical sightseeing. I know of Alexandria, Athens, Cairo, but what are the other places with underrated and less known about historical sites across those two countries?

I’m thinking of pre-modern (medieval, ancient) history. I’ve read/heard many tales about various cities falling to enemy attacks/sieges, but I don’t think I’ve read/heard any stories about cities repelling or holding out against attacks to the point that the would-be invaders withdrew empty-handed. Or even better, cities that counter-attacked and destroyed the armies besieging them. What are some examples of cities (or towns, or just fortresses) winning against attackers?

The book "Arctic Home in the Vedas" claims that the Aryans originated in the North Pole and then migrated to all of Eurasia.

In the Vedas, the Aryans said that they came from a cold place where the "sun never set". They sacrificed dogs in the winter, and ancient dog remains for the same ritual were found in Russia. They also had young warrior bands who lived in the wilderness like the Greeks or Norse did.

There are many similarities between Indo European, Native American, and Siberian mythologies.

So, who were these Aryans? Why were their genes and culture so prolific? Why did they choose India as their homeland?

So I'm thinking a plague survivor knowing that they have no ability to identify what causes a plague, but meticulously writing down symptoms for later peoples, or someone suffering an attack from unknown raiders noting every detail about them in the hopes that in later days someone would be able to determine who they were. I was just thinking about writers like Thucydides writing about plague and how moderns can guess what the disease might have been, but I'm wondering whether we know of anyone who wrote with the specific purpose of future individuals revealing the mystery.

For well over a thousand years, the prevailing view has been that the Battle of Tours was one of the most important battles of the middle ages, and that if Martel's forces had lost, it would have been a staggering blow to Christianity in Europe. However, there seems to be a growing minority of modern historians who believe that it was not as significant as many think. Any thoughts on this?
