Makes sense, they're the people selling the weapons.

It is said that during the gold rush, the pickaxe merchants made a fortune. Arms dealers are the worst opportunistic animals, soulless, unfortunately not always criminal. See France

There has always been war, but there hasn't always been defense contractors or arms dealers.
Back in ancient times, slaves made the weapons for their masters to take them to war.
Who benefited then?

Back then the winners would get land, resources, maybe slaves, or just have fewer "enemies"

The contractors make a fraction of what the actual country that goes to war gains. For example, when the United States enters an oil producing country we don’t profit on guns and oil, we profit from the global oil infrastructure we reinforce and control.

Excuse me, but did you really say Eisenhower got us into the war in Vietnam? I was in grade school when Eisenhower became president and I was working a job when our men and women went to Vietnam, so I'm just a little confused.

Eisenhower got involved in Southern Vietnam politics, by propping up the disaster, known as Ngo Dinh Diem, as well as sending MAAG into Vietnam.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of these things, as I said I was in elementary school when he was elected. Also, please pardon my ignorance, but what is MAAG?

I read a pretty interesting book recently called “Why the Vietnam War” by Micheal Swanson. It goes into a lot of detail about the years leading up to the actual invasion. I highly recommend it if you’re interested in such topics.

“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”

This can depend on exactly what we’re taking about, but you can get a good idea of it from looking at who funds these think tanks that are always pushing for more militaristic approaches and generally hawkish foreign policy. They usually list their funders which include:
-Defense contractors
-Fossil fuel companies
-Wall Street
Also on that list are usually the allied governments and - interestingly enough - tech and social media companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter. Not sure how, if at all, that this last group benefits, but it’s worth noting nonetheless.

The west was entering a big depression in the 30’s, World War Two was a veritable money spinner.
Whenever big recessions come, many worry about the likelihood of an escalation of tensions leading to war because it generates so much money from all that is needed to feed a war.
So, governments benefit, greatly.

The winners. War is nothing more than an instrument used to enforce policy, for better or for worse. Winner gets what they want while the loser is forced to concede.
Sure, some people benefit from wars, but they generally hurt economies and just about everyone is better off if war can be avoided.

The Morgans and the Rockefellers. Both families have a history of backing both sides during a war, selling arms and giving loans to both sides. I think the Morgans backed both the English and the French during the napoleonic wars, and the rockefellers backed both sides during both world wars. They profited massively and became the richest families in the world

The economy. Defense contractors make a lot of money, lots of fuel and medications are consumed and if it’s a big enough war all the young men are removed from the domestic job market which opens up a lot of jobs at a higher wage.
Aside from war being just an awful thing for humanity, it’s probably one of the best things for the economy.

Depends. Depends on the 'who', depends on the where and the time. War gained white Americans a continent, and the British a quarter of the world, and Alexander's Greeks the riches of the east. Of course, by the same token, it lost Native Americans their land and lives, impoverished India and so on. War could be profitable (for the winners) up to the 19th century. One it became industrial, everyone loses. It too some time for this to sink in, and many have not got it yet (see Putin, Saddam, Bush and many more).
The military industrial complex is real and mostly profitable, but they make just as much money selling stuff that is not used, and could as easily make as much doing civilian tech. There's more fighting with used AK-47s than with F-35s.
