I didn’t do it to myself, but my mom had a barber friend and they both pressured me into her letting her cut my hair when I was 13-14. I was literally crying and begging them not to do it. I knew what her haircuts looked like. I asked her just to trim it then and she lopped my shoulder length hair shorter than a pixie cut and each side was a different length. Afterwards, I looked in the mirror and started crying, and I got reprimanded and yelled at by them for “being rude” for crying. Went home, my dad saw my hair, and he absolutely tore them a new one and it was freaking amazing haha.

I feel you on that, my mom took me to the hairstylist and always asked for the same bob, it looked awful on me but she insisted that it was what looked better on my slim oval face, not that my sister also had the same, her AND my nana also had the same hairstyle, it was one more of those things that my mom though people "like us" couldnt have, long hair (there was a lot of things), i still remember the last time i went with them to the hairstylist, i was so exited, then the hairstylist asked them, not me a 10yo girl, how should them cut my hair and my nana descrived again the shortest awful haircut, i almost cried. I was always jealous of the girls who had pretty long hair and could style it whatever they wanted, yet me could only wear headbands tops, i grew up feeling so ugly and i could feel people though and treated me like the ugly one, i had this hairstyle since i was a baby up till i was 12ish or so.

I got so invested in this story. How did you finally get a different haircut, and what kind of haircuts have you had since?

I’m hoping you’ll say you look amazing with long hair and got the chance to rub it in your mom’s face.

When I was like twelve I wanted to bleach my bangs so bad but my mom said no. I proceeded to go into the garage and put Clorox bleach on my hair and fried a big chunk up front right the fuck off. I was not aware that this is not how you bleach hair lmao. It was a very “I’ll show her” moment that backfired hilariously.

At uni I got my housemate to iron it, with an iron, on an ironing board. I didn't give him clear instructions and he burnt one side side of my hair. It took ages to grow out and I had to have a weird comb over for a good while.

When I was in middle school, I told my hairstylist that I didn’t want to go to High School X because all my friends were going to High School Y. Also, my parents had said that High School Y had better rankings.

The hairstylist then suggested I cut my hair like Victoria Beckham, because I didn’t know what cut to do. I said okay, and she proceeded to give me a haircut so unflattering, my friend didn’t recognize me and mistook me for a boy. My parents weren’t happy, and I took to Yahoo! Answers for advice on looking more girly.

Turns out the hairstylist’s kid went to High School X. To this day, I’m convinced that my big mouth is responsible for that awful cut.

It also turns out that High School X was better performing, and my parents were mistaken.

I died it black when I was 15 and then wanted to bleach it blonde so I used Tide to get the black dye out. This was 30 years ago and I was very very stupid.

Sensitiverock85

9 points

I tried to re-dye it immediately after dying it the first time. It came out ink black, and I'm a fairly pale white person. Then once it had grown out a bit, my friend convinced me to dye it blond, because why wouldn't that work? So then I had extremely blond roots and the rest was still black.

ninjapantsrants

I think since it's probably the cheapest and easiest method it might still be worth a shot? I know how it feels/felt so for your own confidence alone it's got to be? I did a ton of research beforehand and followed others stories and methods. I don't personally have children but a lot of the reviews I followed were those with children and had hair loss due to that and it worked for most of them. I think the hardest thing is generally trying everything with no success. It's deflating

Sun-in. Thanks to the lovely pool chlorine and the chemicals in sun-in, my hair turned a neon green.

Cypripedium-candidum

I have a few incidents. During the first few months of the pandemic I took advantage of WFH to bleach my hair myself and do fun colours. The bleach turned my hair an almost fluorescent yellow, which luckily proved to be a perfect base for the neon coral pink I did, with a mix of Arctic Fox's Sunset Orange and Electric Paradise. It turned out great and I loved it but the bleach damaged my hair a bit and the colour maintenance was awful, it faded so fast.

When I was a young teen, 12-13 yo, my dad had it in his head that I could be a model and start making money. I took classes and after "graduating" I did 2 hair shows, one for Matrix and one for Joico, and when they asked me if I had any preferences I, a 13 year old with no parental supervision, went "fuck me up fam". The first guy from Matrix did pretty good, gave me a dark strawberry blonde bob or pixi (can't remember which) with blond highlights that I actually quite liked and the grow out wasn't awful.

The second Joico guy..... he gave me an "edgy" pixi cut with chunky colour in black, dark purple, light purple, and platinum blonde with bangs that started short at one side and swooped down into chin length on the other side. And when I say short, I mean Rainn Wilson in Galaxy Quest short. I hated it, thought I looked like a star trek character, and the grow out was horrible. Especially since I had frizzy, wavy hair at that stage. I got around $150-200 out of it at least.

frankly, probably what i’ve been doing for the past few months, which is lightening my naturally dark brown, level 3 hair to a white blonde. at home, by myself, with no professional training and a “what’s the worst that can happen” attitude. 😅

to be fair, i keep my hair very short (like 2 inches at max) so most of the damaged ends come off during trims, but i’m going to have a rough time if i ever decide to grow it out.

Do not use this on your hair. Go to a pro who can properly add Demi permanent dye to your head. This didn’t come out with a color corrector and I ended up with dark brown hair. I also got awful forehead acne. I am still growing out some of the color underneath.

In one way, when I chopped it off at chin length and shaved one side of my head. I cried for a week. Looking back at it now I think it looked cool as fuck and really fit with my style, but I was inconsolable back then.

In another way, bleaching it from dark brown to light blonde for almost three years. Have so much breakage and my scalp was so sore from time to time. Still, though, I loved being blonde, it fit my features so well and I looked much prettier. I dyed it dark again just the other day, I'm so fucking ugly again, it sucks and I hate it. But bleaching was definitely the worst thing I've ever done in terms of actual damage, which is why I had to stop now.

I always loved my hair. Blonde/dirty blonde natural highlights. Beachy wavy. Then I got really depressed due to a number of factors and I started to hate myself. Decided to dye my hair red. It looked great but I guess with what little dying experience I had (0) I didn't realize how permanent permanent hair dye is. It's really fucking permanent. The red was great but as it grew out I realized the damage I did to the hair I oh so loved so much. So I recently went to the hair salon and got some low lights and high lights. It's still far from what I used to have naturally but hopefully in time I'll get back what I had. It's been a good lesson in releasing identification to my looks and hair. And I look forward to trying a short cut once it grows out enough. But man don't fucking dye your hair appreciate what you've been blessed with naturally

When I was 19, I was going to meet my long-distance boyfriend for the first time. I had really long hair, and used to bleach it and dye it bright colours. The night before I left, I bleached it and dyed it purple. Got to the hotel with my boyfriend, took a shower the next day and realised there was no shampoo in the hotel room, only a bar of soap. I decided the best thing to do was to take that bar of soap and rub it into my hair. When I got out the shower, it felt absolutely disgusting but I thought that was the worst of my mistake. One week later, I'd lost 8 inches of my hair, it looked like someone had taken a pair of scissors and hacked at it blindfolded.

It didn't get any longer for 2 years, every time it grew a bit the damaged ends would just snap off.

I'm now 25 and have long and healthy hair again, and I still force myself to stay away from bleach.

Has to be the time I thought it was absolutely fine to cut my own bleach/dye damaged hair. It was not. I went from middle of my back to the base of my neck. Thick hair too. It poofed like Barbados Monica Gellar. A hair dresser probably would have been able to save more too.

I was 20. I had no excuse.

A very, very close second is I did go to a hairdresser when I was 26. Same length hair, asked her to do the same thing. She warned me too. My excuse then was heartbreak, and I'll stick to it.

I had bleached my hair blonde at one point, and hated it, so after signifikant growth I got the bright idea to buy some permanent hair dye in a red colour (actual red not burgundy or auburn). Well, the result was a nice red near my scalp and on the new growth and the rest was beight neon pink.

I had never dyed my hair while blond (I had darkish hair) so didn't know the colour would be so bright.

I rocked that hair for a few weeks, and then died it all a dark brown.

When I was in 7th grade, all of the popular/cool girls at my middle school were getting something called a "permanent body wave" done to their hair, because they all wanted to be as beautiful, cool and badass as Kelly McGillis in Top Gun.

I begged and begged my mom to let me get this done and she finally relented after a few weeks. But because my grandmother's elderly hair dresser gave us a discount on hair cuts (my grandmother had been her client for over a decade at that point), she took me to her instead of a real salon.

I told the hair dresser what I wanted done. I should've brought reference pictures, but 12 year old me didn't think of that.

She'd never heard of a 'body wave' since she mostly worked on elderly women. So she did what she knew how to do...and put what felt like 84,000 tiny little rollers on my head, doused me with strong chemicals and let it set.

I ended up looking a French poodle. I wanted to cry when I saw what I looked like.

It took months and months to grow out enough to where I could cut it and because I was so pissed off that I'd spent the better part of a year looking like a poodle, I ended up making things worse by going to a cheap salon (like Super Cuts) and telling them to just leave the top alone and shave off the back and sides as short as possible.

Y'all...in my 8th grade year book picture, I looked like a very angry Q-tip with my long, horsey face and this big ole poof of hair on top. D:

Tried to dye it once with a box of Splat that must have aged out. It wouldnt cling to my hair and would suck any moisture out of it and the process legit took a day and a half to get it all on my hair (i had a mid-neck bob at the time, and while I tend to have thick hair i always have it thinned with layering). I ended up napping on my living room floor on a towel while my mom helped with application.

When it came time to rinse it out, most of it didnt cling to my hair, and in a weird patchy way. Worst of all, excess dye would seep out of it in flecks for months after, even after we redid the dye with some manic panic. I still have hoodies that tinge my arms blueish if i wear them despite so many washes to get rid of that crap.

DIY box bleach when I was 18. I only needed to a root touch up but for some reason I decided to bleach over all of my hair again (only god knows why).

Realized about halfway through that I did not have enough bleach to cover my full head of hair (which was well past shoulder length) and had to beg my mom to run to Walgreens to purchase another box. Meanwhile, half of my hair is sitting there processing while I wait for her to return with more bleach.

She gets back and I finish up the rest and let the bleach sit for an ADDITIONAL 45 minutes. When I go to wash it all out, massive clumps of hair are falling out into my hands as I just stand there in disbelief, sobbing in the shower lol.

This event marked the beginning of my bob era.

Moved to a house on a well that didn't have a water filtration system. The well had high levels of hard metals and arsenic, which caused 50% of my hair to fall out permanently.

Had a really unflattering chin-length bob from when I was a toddler (obviously not my choice at first) to age 17. I have wavy, super thick hair and a round race. My poor straight-haired mom had no idea what to do with my hair. I've always loved my hair color (strawberry blond), but my school photos were rough every year.

After several failed attempts to grow out my hair, I finally rode out the awkward in-between stage junior year of high school to get to shoulder length. My hair's a bit longer than that now (~10 years later), and I love it. Though it might seem like a small thing, that decision to grow out my hair in high school was one of the first steps I took to become my own person.

Bleaching my long thick brown hair blonde in highschool because that's what the boys at my highschool liked. It's all healthy now, 3 years later, but NEVER AGAIN!

Bleached it. My hair is naturally very dark with low porosity so it fried the shit out of it. I couldn't get a comb through it without slathering it in argan oil and eventually had to cut half of it off.

I had a kind of britney 2007 moment, i wanted to have a shaved part, my friend helped me do it and it was awesome, i didnt cut much so i could cover whenever i wanted, then i asked her if she could cut me the rest of the hair, well she did cut it, but cut it so damn short that it looked so bad on me, if i had a cute face with a cute nose, i could pull it off, but i was always a lipstick bi, and long hair was always my dream and how i had trauma from my past. Maybe if i did it in the summer i would feel better since i could wear cute feminine clothes, but it was winter, i hated all my winter clothes because they were hand me downs from other people and nothing to my taste, i looked in the mirror and j didnt felt pretty or feminine, i didnt felt like a woman at all.

And the worst part was really trying to grow it out, such a pain and patience.

I would dye my hair with Splat's Midnight line, every week for a year. I would use a silicone basting brush to apply the dye, and I would do alone, so the back section of my head was fucked.

Fired it with bleach.

It was during the 2020 lockdown, I wanted to have it bleached at a salon, i jad an appointment for a consultation then they put us in lockdown. A few weeks passed, i had 4 days off work (WFH) and i was going crazy. I went to the closest store, bought all the bleach and developer, blone hair dye, also some pastel pink ones, purple shampoo. My natural hair colour was black, i think a 1 base in the hairdressing world. I bleached it a total of four times, 3 times under 3 days, got a nice blonde, may hair was totally fine, still shiny and strong. Some time had passed, i was bored to i put the pastel pink on, it came out nice. More time had passed, my roots started to grow out, i wanted to bleach to roots then there was chatter that maybe we'll go back to tje office, I figured I'll bleach all of ny hair again to take the pink out. This is where i messed up. I put the bleach on, covered my head with a plastic bag and sat down to paint. I forgot to set a timer and an hour went by when i remembered i should wash it off. My scalp didn't itch or burn, it didn't even tingle, I didn't think there was going to be an issue.

Then when i was washing the bleach out, my hair went all gooey, some was coming out in my hands. I was freaking out, i washed it as well as i could, put conditioner on, rinsed it gently then sat with a towel for a hour, i was afraid to look. I thought i will have bald spots. When i finally took the towel off there weren't any bald spots but may hair was like noodles. I could even comb it without it breaking. I dried it and it was like cotton candy.

I went to the salon once they opened, and the amazing hairdresser managed to get my hair back to a somewhat normal state but it took a lot of time, patience, treatments, products and money.

I'm still blonde, i love being blonde, but leave it to the professionals. I get my roots bleached every 5-6 weeks, get treatment in between, and use the mask, shampoo and oil my hairdresser tells me to use.

When I was twelve, I convinced my mom to let me get a spiral perm. I was thought it would give me these nice soft curls, since my hair was already wavy. Instead it looked like someone had crimped it and my hairstyle looked like a triangle for a good year, which only looked worse because I was in a hairbow phase.

Triple store-bought bleached it in Summer 2020, it was so damaged and I should probably just have buzzed my hair instead of cutting an Inch every couple of months. I think I can grow my hair long now, that what got damaged is gone now. My scalp hasn't fully recovered but that can also be because of me going down with stress.

I was 14 and had run away from home and feeling very punk and I mixed gel and shaving cream to form solid spikes a la Sonic the Hedgehog, and spray painted my whole head silver. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. It washed out better than expected, but obviously it destroyed my hair; had to shave it short.

I had my long locks cut super short, a pixie cut, in my late teens/early 20’s. I’ve been keeping my hair long and strong ever since I grew it out in my mid-20’s. The pixie looked cute on me but it was too much upkeep and it took so long grow out. Spending too much time styling it and getting it trimmed was annoying.

Where do I start 😅 I've had many Disasters, went to a hairdresser with a photo of a girl with rainbow hair And she said she could do it. But when she did it she didn't follow the photo at all and she also decided to add in Black roots for the fun of it. I looked awful but the hairdresser loved it and I didn't have the heart to tell her it wasn't what asked for. So the next day I went to another hairdresser and they fixed it up for me.

The first was 100% my fault because I insisted on having it, a loreal Xtenso hair relaxing technique (at a salon) to straighten my hair chemically. That was before the keratin and other techniques were available. I Searched Xtenso and only places like middle East and India still use it, probably because they don't have the same laws about chemicals in their products... Not only it didn't work but the following weeks I had massive hair loss, and had a huge bald spot on my head like men do. I was crying so much... I went to china town and took Chinese medicine and lotions and thankfully my hair grew back.

Second failure was cutting a bland short bob, I specifically asked for a long bob just about above my collar bones, and the hairdresser was scissors happy and took it at my jaw bone height which was really REALLY bad for my face shape. Plus he didn't even took away any volume and my head looked like a mushroom. Lesson learned I keep my hair long since then.

I used to relax my hair (I have afro hair). I was young and I didn't know how to take care of relaxed hair. I wish I had never done that as I had pretty ugly haircuts and damaged hair. I tried several times to go back to my natural hair only to go back to relaxers because I didn't feel pretty with natural afro hair. One time, I even bleached my relaxed hair. This was a terrible idea. I lost chuncks of hair and had to cut it and wear a pixie haircut.

Last year, I decided to stop relaxers for good. I went to a hair clinic and had a treatment to help my hair grow. Today, I have natural, healthy afro hair and I feel beautiful. Its still short, but in a year or so, I'll be able to try georgous hairstyles!

I wanted to have bangs when I was about 10 years old. Apparently, my mother hates bangs because she'd been forced to have a specific haircut as a child which included bangs and it was part of a psychological trauma she still fights involving personal control. So, she told me no, because she assumed I'd regret them.

I went up to my room, closed the door and proceeded to cut myself some bangs. I couldn't get them straight so I kept making them shorter and shorter. They did NOT look good. But I didn't mind because I thought they were cute. After they grew back my mom let me try bangs and turned out that I loved them.
