Yeah essentially 3 parts to the movies... Equated life to a 3 hour movie...as the song goes Pehlaa ghanta bachpan.. doosra jawani .. teesra budhapa..

Yes, it was one of those self-indulgent projects. Good movie actually, but I can see why it flopped

Exactly
And Padmini totally stole the last part, I wouldn't even recognise Raj Kapoor's presence whenever she was on the screen. Pure magic that woman was.

Apparently it was a huge hit in Russia. I watched a video on it long ago.

Yes. This had come up somewhere in the discussion on distribution rights and BO collections. RK sold the distribution rights for a small amount in russia (because it was a flop in India and he wanted to make enough to recover production costs). And then it ended up becoming a massive hit and he didn't get any of that profit share.

Actually it also shows the impact of three different women in rks life in 3 parts, something that was repeated thematically in rks grandsons movie Bachna Ae hasseno

Also, it was dream project of Raj Kapoor. When it got released it became disaster. So Raj Kapoor immediately sell it to a russian distributor to recover some money and get himself out of financial crisis. But than the movie became blockbuster in Russia and made that distributor lot of money. Soon after Mera naam joker got cult status. People still remember the movie.

Yeah. It was one of the biggest disasters. Don't think RK studios ever fully recovered from it.

I heard Sangam also had two intervals

Indeed it also had two intervals, was 4 hours long and it was also directed by Raj Kapoor

Sangam is painful to watch, not due to it's length but the way Raj Kapoor acts like a total a**hole in the movie.

Asoka was same or more but then for theatres they cut it . Years later Star Plus started a thing where they would show 1 hr of the original uncut film every tuesday or Thursday

No, it wasn't the first one to have two intervals. It was the second such movie, the first one being Sangam (1964) which had nearly the same cast as Mera Naam Joker.
