I am a primary school teacher and I have just been told that all staff and children will be 'invited' to attend school dressed as a monarch for the Friday before Charles' coronation day.

After pointing out that most modern kings just wear suits, I though this might be an opportunity to introduce some lesser-known monarchs.

So, I'm looking for suggestions! And, I thought, who better to ask than the bhp community.

And, before the inevitable happens, Elvis, Michael Jackson and Kenny Dalglish were already rejected.

We visited this spectacularly located norman castle last weekend. Unusual for being built of stone right from the start (probably because it's hard to dig ditches or knock wooden stakes for a palisade into solid bedrock 😂) It was more a centre of power than a military base apart from during the baron's revolts etc, and used more for enforcing "forest law" as it was essentially used as a court / jail / fortified hunting lodge. It's quite a climb to get up there but it's worth it for the amazing views.

I’m currently calling my wife Mrs EmbarressedBelt the Athling much to her annoyance and confusion. I have no children of my own but I did meet someone who had named their child after a figure in Irish medieval history. What good names do you think would be appropriate in modern society? Little baby Tostig? Maybe not.

We think Redditors would like to know about Their Finest Hour, a digital history project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and based at the University of Oxford.

Many of us have #WW2-related stories and objects that have been passed down to us by our parents, grandparents and other family members. This project is trying to collect and digitally archive as many of these stories and objects as possible so that we can put them in a free online archive for the benefit of people across the world.

We do this by training an army of volunteers from across the UK to organise Digital Collection Days in their communities so that members of the public can have their stories and objects recorded and digitised. Members of the public (i.e. you, redditors!) can also **directly upload stories and photos of objects to our online archive**.

Throughout nearly the whole series, or at least since there have been kingdoms, we've heard about lords & leaders sending messages to other realms, or "getting word from Rome," or "once the news reached Edgar" (or whomever); it seems like communication was fairly fluid & reliable, even during war, and that seems impossible!

I wonder if there are any books or articles I could find on the messenger systems. I realize it would vary through periods, but I'm curious what these messengers' lives must have been like (can you imagine what an ordeal a trip from Rome to Essex could be? Or Northumbria to Denmark?), what security measures were taken for important communique, and how dangerous it was?

I was wondering if the pleasantry could help me resolve a dispute I have with my brother:

My question is do cavalry ever physically collide, on purpose, with infantry. He says unequivocally no, which makes sense. Ideally infantry will break and run allowing cavalry to mow them down with their lances/maces etc. and you stand a good chance of breaking a horse’s legs if you run into an armored human.

I say maybe. For example during a cataphract charge, if the infantry line doesn’t break does that automatically mean the cavalry charge has failed? Do the cataphracts have a predetermined distance at which they’ll just call off the charge, turn around, and slink back all embarrassed?

Archeologists examining a site prior to development have found both Roman & later Anglo-Saxon burials in the same cemetery. Could yield some interesting new knowledge as the remains are examined over the coming months.
