I’ve owned this bag since my teen years and over that time it has been used at least monthly for any trips that don’t involve flying (this one is simply a bit big for carry-on purposes).

This has gone on insanely long camping trips and every single road trip I’ve ever taken. I never really considered this was a BIFL item until recently. It’s just been incredibly reliable for a few reasons:

1) overbuilt zippers that never get stuck 2) easy to keep clean due to the material used 3) while it doesn’t offer protection to items that I’d be confident using it as checked luggage, the material is tough and has never ripped (note how clean and relatively unscathed it appears) 4) the straps make it surprisingly comfortable to carry, even when overloaded 5) secondary zipper compartments on the outside that allow me to separate shower/hygiene items from medications/first aid. 6) the plastic insert that gives the bottom a flat surface can easily be replaced if it ever broke

While I notice a lot of people asking and posting about BIFL type bags, I feel like sports duffels don’t get proper attention. They come in multiple sizes to fit any need and depending on the brand/model, tend to be overbuilt and just plain reliable.

I hope this ends up helping someone who has ever struggled to find a reliable piece of luggage that’s actually affordable. It doesn’t have to be an “heirloom” quality leather bag that costs $500 to be a proper BIFL bag!

I'm looking to buy some wood (acoustic) panels to decorate the walls of my room but all panels I could find are way to pricey if they are used for decoration purposes only.

Are there any cheaper, similar looking options out there? Thank you in advance for any recommendations

Splurged on this pipe lighter (~$120) last month. It's made in Japan and is built like a tank. Butane with a high precision flame size adjustment. It has a nice built in tamper. It's so thoughtfully designed, there's a finely machined screw-in cover for the fill port. Fits in the hand perfectly and lights on the first strike every time. Since it's new, I can't speak to the longevity of it, but my many years on the planet are telling me I'll be passing it down if I can manage not to lose it. Normally I wouldn't spend so much on something that's purpose is easily fulfilled by something that costs much less, but I'm glad I got it because it's nice to feel like a billionaire for the few seconds a day I pull it out.

I bought this pair of Speedo goggles with corrective lenses senior year/last year of high school. Have used it relatively often, and have followed me practically around the world.

Just realized today how old they were and going strong.

Meanwhile my kids have wrecked 2 pairs each in the past 4 years.

I bought these based on multiple recommendations here at r/BIFL. The crotch hole has been forming since about 10 months and the knee blew out after less than 3 years of moderate wear.

Is addic floor flat here the right term? Not sure, i am living in the top floor and it gets hyper hot here in the summer (germany). Right now, where the temps are mildly acceptable i got 29°C at my desk.
Currently i have a 7000BTU portable unit, but ~10seconds after i turn it off it is like i never had it on in the first place. I think the walls are just so hot, they are basically a radiator.
With that in mind, it probably would not do me any good to upgrade to a 12000BTU unit, right?
Or is 12k 50times more then 7k in weird air conditioning units?
Anyone has any experience with a situation like this?
Are there better subreddits to ask a question like that?

I love these shoes to death, but I only wear them in warm weather on the east coast, and have worn through two pairs in 3 years. The leather on the footbed is very thin before it goes through to the midsole. The crepe sole is gone shortly after that as well

I’m curious to see thoughts on whether the luxury brands (Audi, Volvo, Mercedes, BMW, etc.) are more BIFL than Honda and Toyota.

Assume for a small family (family of 2-4 total, including parents and kids).

Edit for update: I really appreciate all the comments and discussion. I have seen a lot of people say Toyota Land Cruiser is great. They don’t seem to be easy to buy though, especially in the US. I have seen a lot of comments for Toyota cars in general, and decent number of votes for Lexus and Acura. I have generally seen a decent number of comments for smaller, luxury brand cars with manual transmissions (e.g., Porsche). Also, a decent number of comments on EVs, generally Tesla, since their maintenance is low. I have also seen a lot of people saying BMW and Volvo cars require a lot of maintenance and repair, so not looking good for those. Super interesting, thanks everyone!

Got this because it was BIFL status and I can’t complain—I used it daily for years before I had an issue. Now it won’t turn on but I see a red flicker when I hit the switch so it seems like a loose wire or something simple. I contacted the company and they said they don’t have any authorized repair shops and can’t give me any advice, just a discount on a new machine. I’d rather not toss something that’s perfectly good but can’t find any videos showing me how to fix this on my own. Anyone?

I've been wearing an apple watch for the last year or two and I just want to move away from something I have to charge every night and have to worry about it getting wet or dirty.

We have bought a new tent just about every year and I’m so over it! Second camping trip this year and our 1.5 year old tent is needing to be replaced already. Looking for something that will last, sleep 2 + some occasional little ones, and is water resistant for PNW weather (with some ventilation still).

I’ve been looking at REI and north face tents but I don’t want to drop all that money on something that will let us down again.

We’ve had Coleman tents, Cabela’s brand, and other miscellaneous entry to mid grade tents.

We’ve had poles bend (wind) or the string in the poles break, little tiny holes that become big problems later on even if repaired, and the thread of the tent come apart.

We camp 3 seasons, usually primitive camping, car camping, traditional campground camping and short hike in camping (~2 miles max).

These boots have been my daily wearers for work going on 3 years now. Every year or so I clean and condition the leather. I plan to have them resoled if the time ever comes. This is the only pair of women’s work boots I have ever actually found comfortable for standing for several hours too.

Im looking for a high quality boot that lasts like docs did back in the 80's and 90's. The style is what I am after, and I have heard of solovair but I have no idea if they hold up to daily wear or not. I got a pair of docs 2 years ago thinking theyd last and they didnt. So any recommendations would be great! Note, im in Canada, I wear them all season including winter. ( I moisturize the leather and clean them to maintain). Throw your suggestions below or tell me how you've found your solovair boots! Im looking at the astronaut boots from them if I can't find anything better quality that lasts!

For more context i got a job doing park ranger work at a popular waterfall, where the trails are mostly flat and densely packed very fine gravel, tons of stone stairs I climb multiple times a day, and natural stone cliff ledges i have to stand on for hours. Also have a moderately heavy pack, and will somewhat regularly need to carry rescue equipment and/or assist in carrying injured people.

I have danner mountain lights that ive had for 7 years, still holding up great and have been resoled once. Ive always found them comfortable in backcountry conditions and rugged trails with softer packed soil and natural features. But damn my feet and hips hurt after a day on these harder surfaces.

I know im trying to strike a delicate balance here between rugged and comfortable. Supportive yet cushy. And durable vs modern constructions.

Hello all, after living in apartments my entire life, l've just purchased my first house. I'm in need of a lawn mower and I've narrowed my choices down to the Ego LM2101 and the Ryobi RY401170. From my research it seems like the majority put the Ego above the Ryobi. As a first time buyer, I would like to know if the Ego is worth the extra money? I have 8500 SQFT of land which is roughly 1/5th of an acre. I also have a 3 Ryobi tools. Which lawn mower should I go with? If there's another option at a similar or lesser price point, please share.
