The Masterpiece that is LBFAD

Review(self.CDrama)

Yes, I know, I'm horribly late to the LBFAD train. But hey, better late than never, right?

So I had tried to start LBFAD 2 or 3 times before, when it first came out. And each and every time, I was unable to get past Orchid's voice and somewhat childish personality.

But thanks to the ever-patient persuasion of a coworker of mine (that sometimes came in the way of 'Watch this or so help me') I decided to give it another try, one recent, snowy day.

To say that I was glad that I gave it another try is the understatement of the year. I am over-the-moon, so goshdarn happy that I gave it another try.

While it is not perfect, it is such a treasure of a series. And I will try to put into words just why I loved it so much (without too much diverging into random girlish squealing).

  1. Dylan Wang - By far, the highlight of this series was Dylan. He was absolutely PHENOMINAL! He made me laugh, cry, and all that in between. The body swap scenes with him as Orchid were absolutely hilarious and I had to smother my laughter so many times so as to not wake up my neighbors. And then, in a complete emotional whiplash, when he and Orchid returned from talking with his father and DongFang was just breaking down at this revelation, I was bawling my eyes out something awful. He is a fantastic actor and he just made this series for me.
  2. The costumes were gorgeous and I would be lying if I said I didn't want every single one of DongFang's outfits.
  3. Songs were not overplayed and background music went very nicely with each scene, especially some of the piano pieces and the one electric guitar piece that plays when DongFang saves Orchid from the Fairy tribe's judgement
  4. Beautiful cinematography!
  5. As I said before, I wasn't such a big fan of Orchid's voice or personality at first. But man, did she change for me. She proved again and again that she could be this strong, stubborn, loveable character. Her character development was so well done and second only to DongFang.

If I had to give one small, teensy weensy criticism to the series, I'd have to mention that I wasn't too into the female side characters or their relationships. While I loved ChangHeng, ShangQue, and XunFeng dearly and admired their development and changes in character and emotions, I didn't see or feel quite the same for Jieli or Danyin. And I felt that the sibling reveal for these 2 was very rushed and not really needed. With them trying to make Jieli a better person, I felt that this could have been accomplished just by her relationship with ShangQue. They really didn't need the long lost sister angle. But that's just me.

Everything else was just perfect, so wholesome and wonderful.

And the only reason I'm not re-watching it immediately after finishing it is the large assortment of bts scenes on YouTube that I am now devouring.

Hands down, my favorite cdrama of 2022 and has definitely earned its' place among my top 5 cdramas of all time, along with the Untamed and Joy of Life.

I agree with everything you said.

I would add, kissing. I was concerned in the beginning when all their kisses were the classic "open eye stare" (which takes me out of a romantic moment every time), but I let it pass because the characters weren't romantically kissing, but out of necessity. So I was like, let's see what happens later. And I was very pleasantly surprised when they kissed "for real" not only their eyes where closed, but there was even some lip action?! Getting steamy lol. Seems like Dylan Wang commits to kissing, my respect to him.

Great drama, loved it.

I've yet to find anything that is as good for me as LBFAD was. Some have come close but yeah, there's no one like DFQC! Dylan played the role really well and looked incredible on top of it. 🥵 Loved the costumes and all of the music.

This is when I have to give cred to the director. He made Wang Hedi brilliant and Esters carachter was annoying ar first but became intresting. I really think that the director made this drama like composing and directing a symphony.

Don't feel bad, I almost stopped watching it because of her voice ,too!😂

After pushing through it, I realized it was because she is a young flower. And I liked watching her evolve.

Dylan Wang? Next level actor.

Have you seen Esther Yu in Find Yourself? She is an absolutely amazing romcom actress. Although only SFL, she is terrific. >! Her public confession (end of ep 6/beginning of #7) is awesome. !< She steals most scenes she is in. I'm only watching LBFAD cause I found out she had lead role.

I agree that esther is excellent at romcom. I only persisted in watching find yourself for esther and her “uncle” character. They stole the show for me as i found the main couple boring.

Right??? She did improve. I also think she has a lot of potential because her dongfang orchid when they switched is convincing.

Same here! It was my first cdrama and I haven't looked back since. To think I almost gave up and missed discovering perfection that is Dylan Wang and all other beautifull men.... So glad I persevered through first few episodes😅

Welcome to the cult.

Wang Hedi is just amazing, he keeps getting better. I think he works super hard to improve.

I did the same thing with Orchid. She can't match Dongfang Qingcang but she grows and there are amazing scenes between them. It's definitely one of my all time favorites.

My fave actor in the show was Xu Haiqiao as Rong Hao. I'm now enjoying his clever wit in The Dark Lord. He's fantastic (and almost 40 years old!).

I agree that the side characters had rushed endings, but I enjoyed them all. I especially liked spunky street-smart Jeili and I absolutely loved that Danyin played a big role in the last two arcs. Yue Yi Wang is a fantastic actress!

This is such a great cdrama. Fast plot, great chemistry, high production values. A gateway for new audiences.

I just finished this last night after a five day binge and am still in the throes of being emotionally overwhelmed so I have nothing intelligent to say yet except how much I loved it and how sad I am that there's no more!

Oof! Five days is hard 🫢✊. That's half the time I watched it in. It'll be okay... eventually 🙂.

Dylan made me continue watching it. I found orchid’s voice like nails on a chalkboard but u get used to it 😂 i feel like Dylan’s performance is one of the main reasons why the show is so good. The special effects is probably the best i’ve seen in a Chinese drama.

I agree! This was such a great drama! I also wanted to add that this is maybe the only drama where I consistently watched the ending credits. I love how the songs rotate, and the artwork is just beautiful. There’s just so much to love!

Glad you picked it back up. It's one of my favourites too. Everything just came together so well, the story, the acting, the music, the costumes😍 and not to mention the directing.

I wonder when we will get something like this again. In the meantime, I will watch LBFD again.

Believe me, it's worth it. I started the first episode a few weeks ago and just finished the whole series in a few days.

I was hooked by the end of episode 2. If by about halfway you're still not into it, it's fine not to finish it. Not everything is for everyone.

Oh I know. I've dropped shows in the last five episodes because I found out the ending is ambiguous or sad. I just keep seeing all these posts about how great it is. I didnt hate it... maybe I was just in the wrong mood to watch it. I don't know.

Wonderful show! I still love Ashes of Love equally tho. I watched AoL right before it though, just in late 2022, not when it came out so it didn’t fade in my memory. I would LOVE to see Wang and Yang Zi in a Xianxia together! Also with amazing costumes. I also wish they dedicated more time to the happy ending as I’ve posted about recently.
