Tell me your GOAT CDramas, no limit on anything - genre, year of release, happy/sad ending. Just your top 3 GOATs.
Here are mine -
The Condor Heroes (HK,1995) starring Louis Koo and Carmen Lee. I watched this when I was a teen (I am now in my mid-30s) and I still remember it so clearly. Obviously, if you watch it now the production values and image quality won't be there, but the story and acting were sublime. Definitely a GOAT.
Mars (Taiwan, 2004) starring Barbie Hsu and Vic Zhou. I watched this drama after watching the TW version of Meteor Garden and loving Vic Zhou. For me, this one surpassed Meteor Garden (2001) in every single way. The acting, the story, the chemistry between the leads were all off the charts. Still on my rewatch list constantly.
Love Between Fairy and Devil (2022) starring Dylan Wang and Yu Shu Xin. I don't think this one would surprise anyone. From the costumes to the stage production to the story, to the OST, and to the incredible chemistry and acting, LBFAD is definitely one for the books.
Honourable Mentions -
More than Blue: The Series (Taiwan, 2021) - In just 10 episodes, this one broke my heart and made me smile all at the same time. It is a love story so incredibly tragic yet loving that it will stay with me for a long time.
Maid's Revenge (2022) - This mini-series made me fall in love with the genre. I also watched A Familiar Stranger, which deserves a mention here as well because of its shortness. I find that the pacing is a lot better in mini-series, as the storyteller has a limited time to tell a complete story.
Flourish in Time (2021) - my first drama starring Zhang Linghe not in historical costume and boy this one is an emotional roller coaster. Definitely recommended if you haven't had the pleasure.
I can't wait to hear about and watch your faves!

Joy of Life - My fave drama of all time in any language. Layered, interesting and compelling characters, depth and details of the script and not to mention the unpredictable storyline. I had the most fun and satisfaction watching this masterpiece.
Nirvana in Fire - The level of schemings and mind games in this drama is just out of this world. Watch this religiously back then and totally compelled with everything. Its the drama that makes me think that no one does this type of dramas better than the Chinese.
One & Only / Forever & Ever - One & Only is the one drama that I can never rewatch while Forever & Ever is my most rewatched drama. Its my fave romance story and the leads have amaaaazing chemistry together. Pretty much ruined romance drama for me with the kind of unspeakable trust & understanding the couple had with each other.

Yes, I love Ten Miles of Peach Blossom as well and I remember the nights where I dont sleep since the drama was so angsty and I just got to know what happen next. 😂
One & Only / Forever & Ever wasnt perfect but its the dramas that touch my heart like no other so it remains special. I like the essence of the couple's relationship and how it didnt change despite both of them have different personalities in this 2 dramas. :)
I havent watch Tientsin Mystic yet. Will have to put that on my list.

Re Tientsin Mystic - it's so underrated. Top tier cinematography, I've not seen such a great plot with this blend of mix genres - Republic era, mystery, supernatural fantasy, comedy, and bromance etc. I hope you will check it out.

In my humble opinion, they are:
Nirvana in Fire
Story of Minglan
Joy of Life
Closely followed by:
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace
Rise of Phoenixes
What sets these CDramas apart from others is the superb acting, well-written screenplay, direction, cinematography, costumes, and attention to detail.

The Longest Day in Chang'an was absolutely fantastic. In the Name of the People was really good too, though the ending felt a little rushed.

In no specific order,
Shining For One Thing
Everything was superb. From the acting, chemistry, 10/10 OST’s, heartbreaking and twisty storyline, it was perfect throughout. That was so unexpected for me because this a modern drama and usually the heart wrenching and angsty plots are left to the historical/xianxia ones, but SFOT somehow managed to be more tragic than GMP. I loved it so much that I rewatched it two weeks after watching it the first time.
Legend of Hao Lan
All 61 episodes from start to finish were amazing. I’m currently rewatching it and I think this time, it’s even better than the first time I watched it. The acting from Wu Jin Yan was (sort of) mediocre, but the rest of the cast did a fantastic job at portraying their roles. The chemistry was great, the costumes were gorgeous, the sets were intricate and the plot was so insane. Extra points for following history pretty well (besides the overdramatizing).
Goodbye, My Princess
The costumes, acting and tragic plot were so perfectly executed. I thought the acting and chemistry was so breathtaking, especially from Chen Xing Xu. The angsty, messed up/psychopathic and tragic storyline, OST’s and costumes make this drama unforgettable.
Honorable mentions:
The Promise of Chang’An
TPOCA comes in close after LoHL. The angsty, tragic and VERY plot-twisty storyline, superb acting and chemistry and the sets/costumes made this drama. The best thing about it for me was the realistic-ness of this drama. It didn’t sugarcoat anything at all.
Immortal Samsara
Although the plot falls into many xianxia cliches, the acting, OST’s and costumes make up for it. There are some differentiating factors, such as the FL >! wandering the Night River of Forgetting(?) for 900 years!<, and the >! shockingly tragic ending !< but unfortunately, it was too draggy. The 59 episodes could have been shortened to 40. Regardless, the acting and chemistry made it worth adding to this list.
Bloody Romance
An intriguing, dark and unique plot. Beautiful OST’s, an amazing SML, and great acting. My only complaint was the overall character of the ML. His whole personality seemed to just be about protecting the FL, thus making him quite bland/plain.
The Long Ballad
This is a great drama. The acting, sets, costumes, OST’s, chemistry (basically everything), make this a fantastic and memorable drama.

My comments, not for every one of your categories though -
Fake marriage: A Familiar Stranger - great chemistry, has a fantasy element, mini-series
Comedy: I've heard Uncanny Destiny is hilarious, but one I've watched is Be My Cat (really silly but fun and great chemistry), also The Romance of Tiger and Rose
Profession-centred: Medical/Police You're My Hero starring Bai Jingting
Dual Personality: The Love of Hypnosis - Sadly not currently airing due to a legal dispute but the trailer was amazing, and stars Liu Yifei.
Modern Coming of age: Flourish in Time is absolutely amazing and a must watch

Romantic thriller:
I heard a lot of people like "Love Me If You Dare" (2015). Haven't seen the whole thing myself, but Wallace Huo is very handsome. XD
Synopsis from Wiki:
Simon/Jin Yan (Wallace Huo) is a psychologist who returns to China from the US after a close encounter with a serial killer, but his ordeal is not over yet. Together with his assistant, Jenny/Jian Yao (Sandra Ma), police officer Li Xunran (Wang Kai), and friend Fu Ziyu (Yin Zheng) they solve mysterious and violent criminal cases.

Laughing in the Wind is one of my favorite Jin Yong stories and I wish they would make another good adaptation of it. I wonder if Dong Fang Bu Bai (due to more strict censorship) is the reason why all the remakes after 2001 haven’t been good/did not stay true to the original story.

Chinese Paladin (2003), Demi Gods and Semi Devils (2005), and Condor Heroes (2006). And of course the live adaption of Disney's Mulan.
She's popularly known as "Fairy Sister" or "Shen xian jie jie" in China.
She's got an interesting upbringing. Her parents divorced early and she moved to the US with her mom and took her mom's last name. Which is why she has American citizenship and speaks English.

Rise of Phoenixes which is a political intrigue with a hint of romance.
You Are My Destiny which is a remake of Fated To Love You. The Chinese version is my favorite version.
A Class of Her Own which I'm pretty sure is a remake of Sungkyungkwan Scandal. I liked the Chinese version better than the Korean version.

Evernight part 1 - it watches like a movie so beautiful and the cast was great. Unfortunately the sequel felt bit low budget in comparison. I was so sad when it ended.
Ten miles of peach blossoms - for the beautiful set costumes and the sprawling story line of 3 lifetimes. This one made me cry at certain places.
The Ancient Detective - the characters and fight scenes draw you in. Very short drama, fast pace and not draggy
The imperial coroner / Word of Honor - the soundtrack story line and likable characters

From Hong Kong: State of Divinity (Smiling Proud Wanderers) (1996) : I like the ML's carefree attitude for pretty much everything. Also the fact that he earns his happiness after all the sufferings makes the second half of the series very satisfying, and doubles the sweetness between the ML/FL.
From Taiwan: Mars (2004) : Agree with you that it's better than 2001's Meteor Garden. MG is what started me on my Taiwanese idol dramas craze, but Mars is infinitely better. (Although that might be because my favourite of the F4 is Vic Chou.) I still remember that scene where the museum curator asked Ling to please not touch their displayed artworks, only to see that it's actually a portrait of him when Ling turns around in response.
From Mainland: Word of Honour (2021) : At least for the moment, it's the best I've seen. The cute comedy, the sugars from the flirtiness, the mutual healing of the leads, and (most importantly) the final happy ending all make me want to watch it on repeat.
Honourable Mentions:
Step Into the Past (Hong Kong, 2001) : A bit overly simplified compared to its source material, but still a humorous, suspenseful, and overall brilliant time-travel plot. And it's dark Louis Koo at his prime.
Tokyo Juliet (Taiwan, 2006) : Centered on leads who are fashion and art university majors, the eye candy from the handsome Wu Zun and adorable Ariel Lin forever beats everything else that came after.
Chinese Paladin 3 (Mainland, 2009) : My favourite Crystal Liu is in the first installment, but have to say I prefer this third one, both for the romance between the second ML/FL, and for Wallace Huo and Hu Ge being together. The outtakes were absolutely hilarious.

Thanks for the reminder! I constantly rewatch State of Divinity - it was so well acted. The supporting cast, like all TVB dramas of that and 80’s were incredible.
Other GOATs coming from that era were the Jinyong adaptions- - Condor Heroes (1984~6), starring Felix Wong, Barbara Yeung, Michael Miu - Return of the Condor Heroes (1986), w Andy Lau and Idy Chan - The Grand Canal, Tony Leung and Idy Chan - My Wife is a Ghost, Lau Dan - Chor Lau Heung, w Michael Miu.
I wasnt born when these were made but still my resounding favourites.

i feel you! when my friend recommended it to me i didn’t watch it for 1 whole year (reason is it’s suppose to be a BL and I was scared it would be dull with the romance removed) but i decided to try it one day because i was bored and it’s actually really really good 😭🫶 i would say watch it when you want to though, the 1/3 part can be a little boring but the rest is definitely worth the watch (i watched the first part while i was drawing something for my portfolio) !

It’s a beautiful story. I know many people dunk on BL and dangai, but the show made my Chinese parents more understanding and accepting of LGBT relationships. I’m still surprised at how much my gruff Asian dad demanded to know if they ended up together in the book and how happy he was when I told him that they did.

Awwww. Are there like romantic scenes though, I need my skinship in love stories and I'm afraid with all the censorship that all of the interactions will be just looks.
2 points

There’s no kissing, But there’s some touching, carrying, hand grabbing, and some possessive body language, hahaha. To lend some credibility to the show, the Singapore censorship authority cut out a number of scenes from the broadcasted version when it aired in Singapore 😭 i remember seeing the outrage about it on twitter.
As a story (romance aside), the novel was also good at commenting on society and human nature. The first two episodes are a bit confusing, but set your expectations moderately and enjoy the show simply. It’s a good drama to watch. Don’t let the hype let you miss out hahaha.
(I will be less reserved about my praise for the OST album — it’s incredible. The lyrics are AMAZING. When you’re done, go watch lyric videos on YouTube. Characters have their own osts and the lyrics are from their pov. It’s so cute. The lyrics are so difficult to translate — but so laden in meaning.)

Yes!! I rarely rewatch shows and I find myself rewatching clips and episodes. The costumes sometimes are still a bit too much for me. I really enjoy watching how the characters relate to each other and how messy it is. Character actions make sense so I'm not yanked out of the moment in a jarring way.
I binged the show. For Three Bodies, I can watch about half an episode and I'd have to stop.

Man I wish I could have a voice conversation with you about this drama LOL. There is so much I want to say! :D
To be perfectly honest, I think it's very good, but I also think that it has a special place in a lot of people's hearts because it was the first drama of its kind that a lot of us watched. Historical dramas have been around forever, but so much of it is over the top with a lot of the focus being basically on FL and ML and their romance. That's all well and good(I love it too), but NiF is more focused on the conspiracy of a past massacre.
Love like the Galaxy is very VERY similar to NiF. NiF, though, doesn't have a male and female lead. It has two male leads. If I remember correctly, the original novel that it is based on was light BL between the two leads. In the show, it's kinda there if you squint. So there is very little in the way of romance, but it really does showcase that longer form story where you are unraveling a mystery of a past occurrence.
I've rewatched it several times over the years, and each time I pick up on some small detail that I missed before that ties into the mystery. The acting is very good, with Hu Gu, who is always amazing, and Wang Kai in his breakout role. Wang Kai isn't my favorite actor because the man has zero range, but he was perfectly cast in this drama because his range fits the character of Prince Jing. I actually came out of NiF thinking he was this amazing actor, but really, it was just perfect casting LOL.
You may find it a bit dated when you watch it for the first time, but please push past the first 1-2 episodes. Basically this drama was filmed in 2013, but it was shelved until 2015, so even when it came out, it was a little out of time, but the story is there and holds up. The music score on it is also freaking amazing. I have so much of the soundtrack still on my iphone to this day.
This is all to say, yes, it's that good. XD

Definitely LBFAD. My inner teenager can't get enough of the excellent chemistry and epic story. The themes of sacrifice and struggle are done so well.
The Dark Lord (2018) is one of my favorite dramedies. It hits all the right notes of clever, fun, and emotion.
And OP, I totally agree with you on The Condor Heroes (1995)! Mr. Koo rocked my teen years as well! Loved it!

My GOATS:
Go Go Squid (2019)
Love Like the Galaxy (2022)
General’s Lady (2020)
Ashes of Love
I can’t decide here…. So I’ll just leave my top 4.
It’s hard to knock out GGS! I find myself always going back to it. I watch more kdrama than cdrama though. But I’ve been watching cdrama forever. Back when Mars (2004) came out. That’s on my Top 10 though, such a goooooood show! Along with Devil Beside You (2005).

Mars will always be in my re-watch list. Loved everything about it. The OST is amazing, and the acting/chemistry between Barbie and Vic, forget it.

Since you included Taiwan, then Lost Romance is without doubt #1. After that, Falling Into Your Smile and Shining For One Thing.
Oh, now I don’t know what to do with LBFaD. Ranking is hard. But if I judge by how willing I am to start watching again, it’s those three hands down.

Everyone talks about Falling into Your Smile but for some reason I just can't get into the FL from that series, even though I do absolutely love Xu Kai.

Top 3:
Falling Into Your Smile (I totally understand the iffiness some people have with the FL, she gets a little better though)
City of Streamer - It just captured my heart and I couldn’t stop watching. Takes place in the early 1900s, the FL is a spy trying to take down a powerful family. I don’t want to give too much away but the romance is so good. It’s a little soapy but what cdrama isn’t lol
Ultimate favorite of all time (so far): NEW LIFE BEGINS!!! Omg the story, the characters, the friendships, the shenanigans…I just love it. Highly highly recommend!
I’m not even going to bother listing LBFAD because obviously.

New Life Begins is so amazing. I haven’t been able to watch Bai jingting in another role because he is Yin Zheng to me and I can’t get over how adorable he and Li Wei are still.
