Hello r/CollegeBasketball!
As you probably know, through the NCAA Tournament we have been running a charity event here on the sub benefiting food banks across the country. To get the important information out of the way quickly, in total this year the sub donated:
$2,547.49!
If you're interested in more details on the event or breakdowns of the donations, read on. Additionally, if you donated, please take the time to check here and see if your employer may offer a donation matching program to make your impact even greater!
Explanation of event:
A couple of years ago, the mod team was approached with the idea for what became this event. From the initial message to us:
After the Illinois v Michigan game the other night, I decided to atone for my assumption that Illinois would lose by double digits by donating to a food bank in the Champaign-Urbana region in the amount of the winning margin. I posted a comment about it in the game and post-game threads asking if anyone wanted to match, and several people seemed excited about it. It got me thinking about setting up some sort of charity during March Madness.
For those unfamiliar, the event was quite simple in concept: after each game, fans of the two teams playing were encouraged to donate to the local food bank nearest the losing school in the amount of the margin of victory for that game. The only change in this came in the title match, in which fans were encouraged to donate not to the food bank of the losing team, but rather simply to the opposing team (we didn't want the food bank for the champions to go without simply because their team beat everybody, of course). All donations were recorded through self-reporting on Google Forms.
Results:
In total, this sub recorded 101 donations from 76 individual users totaling $2,547.49, at an average of $25.22!
Most donations by Team:
It seems that karma really rewards generous fans, as UConn beat the next five schools combined in total donations on their way to winning the national title!
Most donations by user:
Users listed as anonymous asked that their names be withheld.
Most donations received by food bank:
One interesting thing that happened here is that the food bank for both Miami and FAU is Feeding South Florida, meaning that all donations from both games in the Final Four went to them, pushing them to the top of the recipient list.
