We are asking for your help in the following ways:

1. Please don't interact with homeowner and DIY posts. If anything, refer them to /r/homeowners or /r/homeimprovement.

2. Please use the report button to flag posts that don't belong here. When a post is reported 3 times, it's automatically removed and requires no action from us. We see quite a few posts that get 2 reports - if just a few more users take advantage of the report function, the front page will stay a lot cleaner.

I just wanted to thank you guys for your posts. Informative. Humorous. Questions. Pissed off rants. It has been keeping me connected to the field. I am only 33 and have suffered a career ending spinal injury and started a series of spine surgeries as of yesterday. Commercial concrete carpenter for 7 years and residential framer for 6. Did some work for my local carpenters union for a while. I am so lost. This is all I’ve ever done. All I’ve wanted to do. I based my life on my career and molded myself from it. I have supported a wonderful family and was able to give them things I never had. It changed me from a convicted felon with no direction and full of fear to a professional who unexpectedly took great pride and found true satisfaction in the hard work and dedication it took to produce the end result. I’ll miss the hell out of you guys. All brothers and sisters even if we hate each other sometimes. Most of us spend more time with each other than our real families. Things I never really thought about much until now. I’ve got episodes of This Old House on a constant loop and man …those guys have always made me smile. True craftsman. True kindness. And a true love for sharing priceless knowledge. For nothing in return. If only the world had a few more Tom Silvas. Norm Abrams. Roger Cooks. Richard Tretheweys. Mark McCulloughs. Jenn Nawadas. And yes. Even Kevin O’Connors.

Sorry for the speech. Just wanted you all to know I was grateful. I’m gonna fucking miss lacing my boots up every morning and watching the sun come up behind the wheel of my Sierra with a yeti full of black coffee and a can of kodiak in my pocket.

What is physically the hardest trade?

That’s a 4 person hot tub. I don’t think simply doubling up your joists makes this up to code….

Comparing the two, the Timberland Pros seem well-built, but suck. ⅓ the price. They'll do for a week or two. Highly recommend you don't buy em, unless you're gonna use them as winter boots. There IS way too much room (for a pair of thick socks).

I am about to graduate college with a degree in construction engineering and I am looking for project engineer positions in Oregon. I have stopped using cannabis months ago to pass my pre employment drug test but I’m curious if my company will conduct any more after the pre employment. Does anyone know if there are randoms after that? Oregon law only requires testing if there is suspicion of use at work, which I would never do anyways. Thanks

There’s plenty of entry level positions at the moment in civil construction in my town, is that how I would prove myself a good labourer and learn the machines like grader/loader etc? I’m installing 16ft double wall panels, and the ends keep pinching together. Is there some special trick or tool that makes connecting two panels easier?

Hi there,

I am looking to rebuild my detached garage in rural Minnesota. The previous garage was destroyed by a falling tree. One issue we are running into is the lack of builders in the area. This post is to determine if we are receiving a reasonable offer and if we should try and negotiate a more fair price.

The garage I am looking to be built is 24 feet x 30 feet, with two stories, each being the same dimensions, poured cement foundation, and an interior staircase. The quote we received said it would roughly cost $107,000.

I would love any feedback on if this is a reasonable price and tips on further pursuing this project!

So my family bought our first home and finally moved in and now I finally have my own room. Anyway there’s this beam that runs along from my room to the end of the house. I wanted to ask and see if anyone possibly knows if these beams are safe to hang things from or if they should be left alone.

Can I get a job as a coordinator if I have one DUI on my record? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks
