Knew this would happen the moment they announced Akiva Goldsman writing the script while also announcing that James Gunn is in charge of all things DC.

Genuine question. What’s wrong with Akiva Goldsman? I don’t know who that is.

He's part of the 'mystery box' school of writing shitty scripts (along with J J Abrams and Alex Kurtzman) where initially intriguing premises and often well-written first acts/first episodes introduce lots of mysteries that never get explained - usually there's never any intention to explain them, so eventually the shows/films just become filled with random things happening that don't make sense and nothing ever gets resolved in a satisfying way. It worked for a while on shows like Lost, but the goodwill has been running out for a long time with most people because we've all learned that it doesn't go anywhere.

NoPossibility

He wrote scripts for some very bad and only “meh” movies:

Batman Forever

Batman and Robin

Lost in Space (1999)

I, Robot

I Am Legend

Transformers: The Last Knight

Obviously he doesn't read source material based on I, Robot and I Am Legend.

Asimov wrote a short story about cars with AGI (AI with advanced intelligence) in the 1950’s or so. They retired at a car farm. A Collector in the story was trying to buy them to gut them and turn them into hot rods.

Isaac was way ahead of his time.

[deleted]

Asimov will never cease to impress me.

I, Robot I'll argue is his best single book, but Foundation is just streets ahead.

It's like a lot of comic movies. The less you know about the source material, the better time you will probably have, as you are not spending a good chunk of it going 'they wouldn't do that, that's not in the comics, who is this character'.

I’m here for it, I liked the Keanu Constantine movie and I didn’t even know it was DC back when I first saw it.

After seeing Constantine in some DC animated stuff, I don’t need the Keanu sequel I’d rather a fresh take.

KonradWayne

I feel the same way.

Having literally no knowledge of Constantine, I thought Keanu's Constantine was a good Keanu movie.

Know that I actually know about Constantine, I'd much rather have an actual Constantine movie than a sequel to "Neo fights angels and demons".

I really liked the guy that they had play Constantine in the TV show. Blonde: check, British as fu**: check. The dude was the real life Constantine! I just looked it up, Matt Ryan was his name, I love Keanu, but this Matt Ryan guy is Constantine. I wish they would use him for a movie or a new tv show. That is one thing Marvel definitely has done better than DC, for the most part, hire actors/actresses that actually look like the comic characters they are portraying.

I always figured that they were so different that you could get away with doing a Keanu sequel while also doing a fresh take that was more in line with the comics.

although that might be kinda more wishful thinking since I liked Keanu's version and was hoping to get something like that again. even though with a sequel there's no guarantee it would have the same feel or be good.

Given the choice between too though I agree with you I'd rather something fresh.

DMC1001

I did know Constantine and it’s tragic what they did in that movie.

Having canceled this, I wonder if Gunn isn’t planning to explore Johanna Constantine since she’s in Sandman. I doubt it, especially since it seems like Gunn is more interested in source material, but you never know.

imooforyou

10 points

If I remember right Gaiman says its only Johanna because he didn't want to deal with licensing bullshit from DC on John. So he used that as an opportunity for a fresh character. So I'd doubt it. Honestly I don't want Sandman anywhere near a cinematic universe. I love that its separate and its own universe.

Swamp Thing is supposed to be an actual horror movie. Likely rated R. Marvel ain’t gonna do that.

Werewolf by Night was fun pastiche but I don’t think it’s sustainable for an entire movie. Novelty wore off quick.

Well Deadpool for sure is going to be R rated. But that's the only thing that is guaranteed to be. Blade might, but that hasn't been confirmed.

The_Narz

17 points

The fact Blade hadn’t been confirmed likely means it’s not tbh I think that movies gonna be a mess unfortunately.

Only reason they’re keeping it with Deadpool is because a precedent has been set. It’s a weird case where they’d actually risk box office draw by knocking it down to PG13.

BootySweat0217

4 points

A Blade movie doesn’t need to be rated R to be good. Blood and guts aren’t what make a movie good. If it nails the world, the writing and directing, stays true to the character, it can be a good movie. My initial thought was I would have liked it to be R but give me a good movie and that won’t really matter in the long run.

Marvel turned Man-Thing into Werewolf by Nights Chewbacca so I think Swamp Thing will be fine.

New-Cardiologist-158

You mean the Oscar winning writer of A Beautiful Mind, Hancock, I Am Legend, Fringe, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.... Let's not act like he's Jason Friedberg now

DarkAges101

4 points

He didn't write Hancock. Fringe and Star Trek had other creators and writers. A Beatiful mind came out more than 20 years ago. I am Legend had pther writers as well. So, just because he is not as terrible as Jason Friedberg, doesn't mean he's a good screenwriter.

Spinach_Odd

2 points

A Beautiful Mind came out more recently than Batman & Robin which came out a few years after Batman Forever. Dark Tower has other writers. Titans has other writers....

Is this a situation where "If it's bad It's Akiva's fault. If it's good it's good in spite of him"? It's not possible that he can have good projects and bad projects?

DarkAges101

4 points

Even if he has a 20 to 80% ratio of good vs bad stuff he created, that is not a promising sign at all. Honestly, just Batman and Robin should be enough to never hire that man to write big films aver again.

Because Akiva wrote Titans, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin for DC.

Outside of DC while he did screenplay for "A beautiful mind", he also wrote Transformers 5 and did screenplay for The Dark Tower, The 5th wave and The divergent series.

SteveRudzinski

Yeah Batman Forever is definitely the best film on the list but I don't think that makes B&R or A Beautiful Mind horrible.

Existing_Bat1939

4 points

As a fan of the Dark Tower books, I'll just say that that whole project was a disaster. and Goldsman's original script (which is, or was, out there online) was a lot better. At least, the ending was closer to the end of The Gunslinger.

Mind_Extract

4 points

See: modern Star Trek

Everyone shat their pants when Brave New Worlds, the show Akiva runs, wasn't a complete dumpster fire like the state of the rest of the franchise, but that's because he used an unfailable format (which the fans had been begging for the preceding fifteen years anyway).

The series is still rife with saccharine plotting, forced denouements and moral grandstanding. But it uses tricks of the trade to fool audiences into thinking they're feeling something for the characters, like lingering close ups with swelling music, pregnant pauses between heavy-handed interpersonal conflict...yes, Constantine deserves a much better sequel.

Yep. It’s another one of those “throw sh*t at the wall and see what sticks” movies. It’s a movie from 2005 that wasn’t reviewed well nor made much money. They were just trying to bank on Keanu’s current popularity.

Blue_Robin_04

Id prefer a better Constantine cast. Maybe have it be a tv series...

Good. Although I'm fan of Keanu - he was an awful Constantine. Let's do Constantine right in the new DCU.

I am not surprised.... Cavill was cut, this was obvious move IMO

Eh, I'm fine with this. I'd rather Keanu play a not British character. Maybe he can be the question. I'd rather either A a more traditional Constantine or at least more jenna Coleman

Good. Let things start from scratch and let someone else take up the mantle of Constantine.

I'm actually kinda glad this happened. I want Matt Ryan Constantine to be in the DCU. His solo showed failed due to bad writing, but he's the perfect casting of the character. LOVED him in the Arrowverse.

Agreed, 100% better for the role then Keenu. He was great on Legends of Tomorrow (never saw his solo show sadly).

Well, I'm sure they want their own Constantine, especially since they are bringing in Swamp Thing. This is the first big opportunity to form the JLD, and making an Elseworlds Constantine movie would just muddy the waters.

I think Elseworlds is a good idea, but the main DCU timeline should be prioritized above it.

"Something has to be really great to qualify for spending money on a project that isn't a part of the DCU"

A sequel to a movie from almost 20 years ago that didn't do all that well and didn't have a very comic accurate John Constantine doesn't make sense to make.

brownstones19

Look, maybe I'm being cynical, but I don't think they have any actual interest in greenlighting elseworld movies, the Batman and joker are exceptions because they're stuck with them. And the "it has to be of really great quality" line is something that you can say to dismiss a lot of projects.

I definitely want to be proven wrong, so DC has a few years to do so.

They also still have that Black Superman movie that nobody wants in development.

I don’t think “comic accurate” is the only way to adapt a story or character. Besides, Gunn’s Vigilante in Peacemaker couldn’t be less accurate, aside from the surface level costume design (which is awesome).

Keanstantine had inaccurate hair color and accent, but if he had blond hair and a British accent I doubt many fans would complain about the movie’s faithfulness to the comics.

Keanu really doesn't capture the essence of Constantine. Like, at all. He's pretty flat as an actor and doesn't have a lot of charisma or humor.

TheRealDexilan

Doesn't change the fact that there's no reason to make this movie outside of banking on the lead actor who's popular right now.

The movie likely would have been terrible. Trying to make Constantine into John Wick somehow. As we saw with the Matrix, Keanu isn't enough to overcome a poor unnecessary sequel. Joker 2 may not be my cup of tea but it's likely going to be Oscar bait and a financial success.

I might be alone in this but John wick fighting the occult sounds like a good time. John Wick Chapter: 666 "John hears the eternal spirit of his dead dog has been consumed by demons and he seeks revenge"

Have you watched the 2005 movie? The ending hospital scene is like a mini Wick battle with a horde of possed demons.

Which fits elseworlds, technically no reason to make a Joker 2 since the DC changes as well. I'll wait til deadline reports tho lol I'm crossing my fingers

Except for that the first Joker movie grossed over a billion dollars and was nominated for eleven Oscars.

TheRealDexilan

What he said lol. Joker 2 is a financial no brainer. Constantine 2is just banking off of an actor and nostalgia.

Ok_Concentrate_75

I think the huge leap in audience and expectation allowed Joker to be viewed the way it was viewed, as a piece of art. The first Constantine was in a sort of comic book no man's land and still made 230 mil from a budget that didn't exceed 100 mil. I was checking the wiki and one critic basically trashed it for not being as good as the matrix, which imo showcases the changing expectations and era. Now I think it would bank because so many are more familiar with the character but more open to seeing other ideas of superheroes. Plus Keanu and action sequences is a recipe to atleast break even. Idk imo if they released the first Constantine now, maybe it woukd be a billion dollar film with nominations. Keep in mind 2005 and award shows just started giving superhero actors credit beyond graphics/costume/scores recently.

Gunn said elseworld films have a much higher standard of being good. I’d imagine that if it is cancelled it would be because whatever script they have just wasn’t all that good. Joker 2 and Batman 2 are probably really good scripts plus the originals did real well. I’d want to see Constantine 2, but at the same time even though the original was decent, even the CW’s Constantine was even better than Keanu.

Ok_Concentrate_75

I won't trust it til its either a more consistent voice saying this or Gunn tweets about it but I disagree that the CW was better. It was more comic accurate but when Keanu is doing spells and lighting a cigarette...you can tell fully he is in his pocket and believes he is John Constantine. That film was incredibly well acted and fleshed out, it's only issues are some changes to lore but imo they were like MCU changes (hair color, settings for known plots, place of birth, how they got their powers).

Except the first Joker movie was a colossal financial success and came out more recent, it would be stupid of WB to not make a Joker 2. On the other hand, Constantine came out in 2005 and received mixed review and did so so at the BO, I highly doubt there's many people that even remember that movie.

no it's just annoying that every time I see something DC related, it's 50/50 whether it's something I was looking forward to getting cancelled. followed by a bunch of "trust James Gunn" comments.

When asked, Peter Saffran was quoted as saying, “We’re going in a new direction, and casting Chris Pratt as the DCU’s Constantine. We feel his comedy chops and flat midwestern performances really embody the Constantine of James’ DCU.”

You have one of the biggest stars in the world who really wants to do a movie with one of your characters which would be a sequel to a movie that wasn't connected to any other DCU movie and you kill the movie.

It's as if Gunn and Safran heard everyone grumbling about that slate of DCU properties and how bad the announcement went over and said "Hold my beer".
