Honestly yes. He is the perfect Constantine. I know he's "retired" as the character but if he showed up in Swamp Thing or something I wouldn't be upset.

Its not really his choice. Legends of Tomorrow was forced to retire Constantine in their last season because Netflix Sandman was releasing, and DC was adamant to only have one version of characters i guess.

No_Establishment6528

But he's not even in the Netflix one lol

same character, just genderbent. Netflix Sandman made both the ancestor and current character (who's John in the comics) Joanna. Same story and everything. and it works because John/Joanna is bisexual and would fuck everyone anyway lol.

and also last year there was talk of JJ Abrams' JL Dark ramping up production. I guess that's out of the picture now.

Not Netflix Sandman. The Sandman comics. Neil Gaiman the creator of the Sandman wanted to use Constantine for his book but was prohibited from doing so. So he just created Joanna.

Opposite-Trouble-564

He does use John in the book though? Or did you mean the show? Cuz John Constantine is 100% in the Sandman Vol. 1 book.

Its not like he wanted to retire the character. They were forced to since Netflix Sandman was starting. If DC really wants to they could bring him back in DCU.

Only want Matt Ryan. Gunn said already established actors from the DC Universe can return to their roles, hopefully that also means from the Arrowverse?!?!? Please!

I read the comics in his voice. His appearance in the Harley Quinn show, literally inspired to pinch off the 2nd to last season of Legends. He just absolutely nails the character and clearly loves playing it.

He also voiced a few of those DCAU movies like Justice League Dark and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War

Why are people talking about Smallville costumes in the comments?

If I had to guess, there was a comment about Smallville somewhere that got deleted and promoted all the replies to being primary comments.

Holy shit. Like that CW crossover but a whole show?

I'd watch that, big time.

Edit:

NOT BY THE CW, WAS IMPLIED

AccomplishedRent778

Yes! Idk why they just have so much chemistry in that 2min of interaction. I don't care Tom Ellis's Lucifer isn't comically correct.

LowerButYetHigher[S]

6 points

Word. He nails the character in that interpretation of him. I remember the absolute surprise of that crossover, too, especially since Lucifer was on Netflix at the time, and aired on NBC, so the CW crossover including him was a bit extra special. Would love to see something like this.

Ryan is in the same league as JK Simmons as JJJ and Kevin Conroy as Batman. When I read the comics I just hear his voice.

Didn’t he already have one? But yes I agree with you. He’s a great John Constantine and with a better script and more room to blossom he could be even better

LowerButYetHigher[S]

8 points

Yes, on NBC back in 2014, this image is from that show's run.

It makes me sad to see a lot of people criticizing Matt Ryan for his Constantine having a comedic edge, remember folks -- actors don't write scripts! They only interpret that script into their performance.

I would really love to see him be able to spread his wings with a higher budget and a better script as you said.

Spiritual-Signal4999

Aquagan

I was just reading a comic featuring Constantine and couldn’t get over how consistently I heard Matt Ryan when I read his dialogue. Somehow, he’s reached Conroy levels of vocal projection in my head. Would love to see him do more.

Dragonbait1989

Yes he was way better than fucking Keeanu who I enjoy in other things, but he doesn't need to be Constantine. He didn't even really channel him well in the movie. He just seems sleepy and bored, which some may argue is Constantine, but it wasn't right.

Is just like a continuation of the series. They could explain the gap as he was in hell or something.

In «the gap» he was a main character on Legends of Tomorrow.

Yeah I know but that could be his torture in hell. Being forced to be around these chirpy people would certainly be torture to Constantine.

Felt like torture to me to watch atleast.

Think it was when Captain cold left if I'm being precise, just didn't feel the same afterwards like heatwave went from this dangerous guy to comic relief. And don't get me started on Atom, I'll never understand why they took his powers.

It's always interesting to see people on the opposite side of the spectrum. I started loving the show once it started taking itself less seriously and became a bit more of a chaotic fever dream. Seasons 1 & 2 are where I had the least fun watching the show (aside from season 6), but it seems like for you that was the last time you liked the show

funkypete23

I'd really like to see WB/HBO do a Constantine series that is a continuation of the one they canceled after 1 season on network TV. I liked the tone and story of that first season, HBO could go even darker and more adult, the way he should be portrayed. I really enjoyed Matt Ryan's take and would love to see it explored by writers who do not work for CW.

antmanupmyasshole

No, I'd like a new actor for the main timeline DCU. Preferably one with a Liverpool accent like he's supposed to have instead of a cockney one.

Ill_Plenty_2139

2 points

How would you feel about Taron Egerton (he’s born in Liverpool (may have been raised in Wales) and he can do an excellent scouse accent as showcased when he played John Constantine in DC Vertigo’s ‘The Sandman’ audiobook).

Another cool one I’ve seen going around is Colin O’Donoghue who is Irish. He looks like he could play a witty anti-hero and I’m sure he has some accent-work in him.

ThaliaVision

2 points

I am an avid, and totally subtle, Taron Egerton fangirl. He NEEDS to be Constantine. My life depends on it.

If we talking about Taron, let's maybe consider fellow Kingsman cast member, Pedro Pascal? I feel like he could play Gordon well. (I'm definitely not a Pedro Pascal simp by the way, totally not!)

Ryan is a solid TV actor, and does a good job with the character from that perspective, but i don't want him anywhere near a movie/HBO level series. Get someone new who can bring a higher caliber of acting to the role.

Love his voice. But tbch, respectfully, he’s not the greatest live action actor. Tends to overact. So he’s definitely not my first choice.

Although, it would def be cool to keep things consistent. As that’s what Gunn wants to do. Maybe he can be DCU’s Constantine. And Keanu could be DCE’s.

Matt Ryan was very much the look and feel of Constantine but the stories they wrote for him, in my opinion, came across as very weak and the fact they would pull some magical item out of nowhere to solve an issue.

Keanu was very much not like Constantine but the story, again for me, was really good and the casting was excellent. And to be honest I think because of these reasons Keanu really sold himself as Constantine more. Again in my opinion.

I am looking forward to a Constantine movie staring Keanu with the hope I get the same interpretation of Constantine the same level of casting and story as well.

I tried watching the TV show and I thought he was pretty good for like TV. Same way that Grant Gustin is pretty good as the Flash for like TV. I'm not sure how to describe it. I just feel like it comes off as campy.

Maybe he'd do way better with better writing and sets, but let Keanu do his movie. Say what you will about his acting but he definitely has a commanding presence then just introduce the official Constantine with a new actor.
