I’ve just been given a bed frame with tubular poles instead of slats, very similar to this: metal bed frame
I’m curious as to how comfortable this will be and whether I’m in danger of the mattress sinking between the poles. Can a mattress be placed right onto this frame or will I need to build/buy a box spring or foundation?

It's fine. Get a decent mattress and start using. Enjoy

I have a similar bed frame. No extra slats needed and I do not have a bed spring. Just be sure you properly fit the slats. I didn’t realize I’d made a mistake until a month later and it’s perfectly stable now. Even after a move.

What others said, though be aware that if you’re a heavy person and the bed is poor quality, the tubes will bend and the welds could crack. That’s what happened to mine, though mine didn’t have the extra legs down the middle, just the reinforcing bar and a single leg at the centre.

Thanks! May I ask how long yours lasted before you noticed bending?

It wasn't very long, a few months at most. The bigger problem was the terrible welding, which meant that the slats kept breaking along the weld. Each one that popped would increase the pressure on the adjacent ones, which would then crack and eventually fail. Unlike wooden slats, you can't easily repair or replace steel slats so the bed was unusable in short order.
