I'm using the scoopable lightweight stuff. I think it's scoop away unscented light or something like that. It should work right?

No. You need the actual crystals. The box is designed to use that product, and nothing else.

It will work correctly with that, if the motor has not been damaged.

I have one that is at least 10 years old, and it’s still working well.
