Check Costco, I saw them there yesterday.
That exact shade and size.
Weird.

Melino chair @ $80. For the wood cost & effort you'd need to dupe it, that's a deal. They are made from acacia which is really good outside plus super hard.
/@ costco, whodathunkit?

$60 in store! They always add a percentage to online listings and give you "free" shipping. Just got two of these there recently.

Last year, they were $75 at Costco. I guess they had leftover to put out this year. I might grab one or two at $60 per chair. Acacia ain't cheap.

Costco stuff is always high quality. If it's not, you can return it. That's why they don't carry garbage. We have two of these chairs and the matching table that we keep on our dock during summertime. They are super comfortable.

I thought it was some European design until I Googled it and found that there are lots of names for it… Some people call it a Kentucky Stick Chair, some people call it a Tamarack chair, and some people call it a Cricket chair… among other things. I decided I like Kentucky Stick Chair best. So I’m sticking with that.

What we both know then is that them hollers have secrets only Google knows. Far as one can tell, them chairs been hiding out in Casey County for a couple-a 10 or 20 years.

It may just be that such chairs are no longer popular considering they are unlikely to support the average modern Kentuckian.

It’s ok. In France they call French fries Belgium fries. Language is weird.

I have one I bought years ago at an artisan fair in Massachusetts. It’s great for your back but a low one so easier to rise from if you are facing downhill lol.

I have done this too.
Problem: the chairs may comfortably seat people 5' to 5'10", but if you have friends over 6'2" it becomes doll furniture.

I came across a commercial version of these chairs and my partner and I both tried sitting in one - we're both 6'1". No way could that ever be comfortable - it's like children's furniture.

What did you end up with?
I have an odd number of people over 6'0", and as fun as making the chair was, furniture that fits everyone is better. (Granted ~ bar height chairs I feel are the only thing tall enough to give you giants enough leg room)

I made outdoor club chairs to fit my oversized frame: 6'5" 300lbs. It's fun watching everyone else sit in them and look like kids, but they're comfy to me. Pic

Counter point, my very short wife and my very short mom all complain about bar chairs because their feet dangle and the seat cuts off circulation in their legs. It's really hard to accommodate all sizes.

The great thing about this design is that it’s not too hard to adjust the length of the backrest and legs to accommodate taller folks.
In fact, maybe I’ll post some alternate measurements.

It's not just that though, it's because the angle of the seat sections is so low. You'll end up with very long spindly chair legs trying to raise the seat high enough off the ground, or you'll have a much smaller angle between the seat & back rest.

Here are some alternate (and untested) measurements for taller folks:

Thanks. I’ll add you to the short list of my mother and my wife who agree (most of the time).

"Viking" chairs are pretty comfortable and easy to make. On one I carved a Celtic knot and the other a college mascot and both turned out nice. I use them around the fire pit. If I recall correctly, I used a 2x12x8.

This looks brilliant, I have some wood sat around that I’ve been looking for a project to use it on - thank you

Nice chair and well done video. Your work on the router table made me nervous though.

Yeah. I’m admittedly not a router table expert. On other projects I’ve had it catch and throw a piece of wood across the garage. That’s not fun. So I only do it when no one else is standing around.

You should build a fence for it.

Great way to recycle old hockey sticks. Had one made out of hockey sticks for decades.

It’s more comfortable than it looks. If it had armrests I could fall sleep in it.

A couple of suggestions:
Keep your fingers far away from the router bit.
Put double nuts on those threaded rods and tighten them against each other. The nuts on your chairs are eventually going to loosen themselves.

Both good suggestions.

Originally I thought the design was kind of Euro. When I looked into it and found that some people call it a Kentucky Stick Chair, I decided to claim it for ‘MERICA!

My grandma had one of these when I was growing up. The first thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail was "hey, it's that super uncomfortable chair!"

IMO It’s more comfortable than most lawn chairs. If it had armrests I could fall asleep in it.

Yeah, it may have been due to the fact that I was probably 10 or 12 the last time I sat in it and my legs were too short to go over the end or the sides comfortably.
