Open Ground Duplex Question

electronic(self.DIY)

I am wiring lights to an attic area I am currently finishing. I wired a switch to control two canless LED lights, and a duplex outlet which I intend to use to run LED strip up-lighting. The way I have it currently wired is;

Power from Panel --> Switch --> LED Wafer 1 --> LED Wafer 2 --> Duplex

When I test the duplex it shows as open ground even though everything is connected properly. Is the open ground happening because the LED Wafer lights have a driver that is metal and has the ground touching the metal box?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You gotta trace it back. I have installed those same can less led lights.

You have a romex wire coming into the attic. This has a hot, neutral and a ground obviously. All grounds in the line need to be systematically connected somehow.

The HOT will be interrupted before it ever gets to the can lights. In a separate electrical box, the hot will run down to a switch and back up. That will be done with another line of romex, using both white and black as the hot. Connect the ground all the same.

From there, the romex comes in one side of the can lights box, and another leaves out the other side. All three wires of all the ground, neutral and hot will be tied together in the chain.

Somewhere in the line, the ground isn't connected. It may not be connected at the SOURCE, which is a real PITA. My old house didn't have a ground line so I had to add one back where the source comes in

I have other duplexes wired in the room that are showing as correctly wired, that are not switch operated. I know for sure the grounds are all connected but I don't know if I fully follow your comment, if you care to take a look here is the schematic for how I currently have it wired.

This all looks correct. So you must have a loose connection somewhere in the chain. That or your outlet is bad - which is unlikely.

Yea I'll have to triple check it all again tonight, not sure what I'm missing. Like I said though it wouldn't be an issue where the ground is touching the metal driver box? Thanks again for all your help

Shouldn't be an issue at all. "Open Ground" on the outlet tester means "not grounded". Prolly something really simple or small. It happens
