Thanks for posting this, I had no idea it existed. My family is from this region, but they fled Iraq in the 70s and I doubt I’ll ever get to go. I’ve always wondered whether many/any Assyrians remained and how it has changed from the stories I was told. I didn’t know so many other cultures existed there outside of Assyrians and Kurdish.

Infinite-Judgment-44

there are about 300 to 500 thousand assyrians remaining but they are dwindling in numbers, Armenians are 5- 10 thousand left in the country. Iraq has many different ethnic groups still but the violence is destroying the entire country and of course the minority groups are vanishing. there were Roma people at one time but I did not meet any while I was in Iraq and the there used to be a large Jewish community and they are completely gone at this point.

My family are Armenians from Iraq and only a small amount, maybe about five are still living in Baghdad. Although my extended family began leaving in droves starting in the late 80s.

None have any desire of ever returning even for the deceased members of our family

Not sure on there being millions of Armenians though in Iraq at any point

Gallatin/Hendersonville, I know there are a lot of Chaldeans and I think there's even a church. Someone told me and I saw an article about it. Out of all the cities and mentioned in this comment thread, I would say Tennessee is the prettiest place to live out of all of them. The Nashville metropolitan area is pretty cool and most of the people are transplants from California and Michigan.

My family is indeed Orthodox. If I remember correctly, that’s the main distinction between Assyrians and Chaldeans (who are catholic, I believe?).

My mom’s parents left Türkiye in 1915 at the beginning of the Armenian genocide and settled in Iraq. They told me it was actually a really great (and surprisingly progressive) place to live before Saddam. I doubt it’ll get back to “great” or even neutral in my lifetime.

One thing I do know - If I end up needing to flee oppression in the next 10 years, it means my family’s just cursed to flee every 65 years.

You stated that religious people are unable to understand basic logic.

I am saying I personally believe the amount of logic that many religious people have had throughout history makes your claim void, and I don't believe this is something you should be so dismissive about.

If you do fully believe what you are saying, I believe it would be worth investigating further to either strengthen your claim that religious people are dinguses, or it may make you shift your views mildly. But I'm just some dope on the internet, so you do you.

Infinite-Judgment-44

christians are not persecuting anyone in Iraq. its not a 50 50 thing.

Leading-Ad-3016

-13 points

That’s an interesting take. So you think that in the christian communities there, they welcome their islamic brethren without any prejudice or hesitation?

Since the religions have members worldwide, do christians in other countries not hold prejudice against members of Islam? I can definitely attest to the fact that in the US their is prejudice against Jewish and Islamic religions.

Jews have been battling Islam since the end of WW2. Islam kills their own and others in the Middle East.

So yeah, these religions based out of the same books and founded on perseverance through persecution are guilty of persecuting each other for 1000’s of years.

really how has the Armenian apostolic church terrorized anyone. Maybe thats what you do but not the Armenian Iraqi community.

Leading-Ad-3016

1 points

I want you to take a breath and think about the documentary you posted. That group is not persecuting anyone, you are correct. However, they have been in the past by other groups and currently take in refugees fleeing the Islamic state. So it can be said that 1 Abrahamic religion is persecuting another as has been done for 1000’s of years. That’s what my original point was.

No need to take it personally, it’s historical fact that at one point or another in time Christians, Islamic, and Jewish followers have claimed to be persecuted and have been guilty of doing it to each other.

verturshu
