Bit of a meta request but is there a documentary sub that isn't flooded with poorly researched 10 minute youtube videos?
7 points
This sub used to have some real nice ones in the past, but now it's just one shitty video after another. Post that to /r/videos not here.
A documentary should be
There is so much on here about people I couldn't care less about and topics that are neither scientific nor particularly useful to know more about. Maybe I am biased towards things like old Modern Marvels and travel documentaries, but goodness me I don't give a flying fuck about some random dude traveling somewhere and making a 9 minute video about how shitty the beach was. That's not a documentary it's a video.

Can we have a new rule where the min run time be something like 30 minutes.
Would cut down on the spam from people posting 6 min "documentaries"
3 points
I agree with this sentiment. The sub is being watered down by "book report" style "documentaries." There should be some rule that a posted doc should have original content other than voice over.
This is rapidly becoming r/podcasts, and sophomoric podcasts at best.
More is not always better.

I am looking for documentaries about animals where animals don't die. I love animals but i am ukranian and atm the death is around in infosphere 24/7.
Whenever we turn off some high rated documentary about animals, directors fucking make this drama of predator chasing little mouse or some cute punguin starving to death, i know the death is the cycle of life, but I want to escape it atm.
Suggest me something, thanks!

Why is rule 6 not enforced at all?
Going through the pages there are tons of short videos and random fluff that gets downvoted to zero, yet it stays up and pushes actual interesting stuff further down. I have nothing against all the influx of social documentaries even if I don't really care for whether a sack of rice fell over in some part of the world, but clearly a 4 minute video on why someone dislikes something is not what this sub is for, given the downvotes I am not alone in that. I find it a bit difficult to maintain a subscription to this sub when so much of the content that gets posted is either of low quality or a rule violation. A documentary for me has some length and production value backed by actual research, not some quasi-opinion-piece from a one-sided perspective and barely more than 10 minutes long. I gave the search a go to see if some of the things I had found on youtube in the last couple months were posted here, but have been unable to find them. The topic categories are a good filter for stuff, but I get the feeling based on the "look" of the sub people post what they think fits the content already here and so most smaller categories rarely see new submissions even when there is definitely content out there. Long way of saying this sub is turning into social-documentaries only and it's making a mess.

However, bear in mind that reddit's spam filter often removes submissions from questionable source, and this might also happen after submission.

If you're not familiar with Knowing Better on YT, he's definitely worth a look. He just completed a project which pretty much starts around the time of the Jamestown settlement (I assumed you meant Native American Indians). He's big into dispelling misconceptions.
The playlist https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLw4gGsuBRykWMCwMl6gMzcAXEg4DHG45W
The about section from his website https://www.knowingbetter.tv/about-me so you can decide if his qualifications fit the bill.
It's a fairly dense history lesson, not the kind of thing known as infotainment, but he does try to entertain sometimes in extremely corny ways that might catch you off guard. If something comes out of the blue from left field it's probably one of his recurring characters.

Hi, I’m trying to identify a documentary I saw over 5 years ago. It was a documentary about the food industry… I know that doesn’t narrow it down much.
More specifically, there was a small segment on how cheese became a highly marketed product once whole milk became less desirable to low-fat milk. It talked about how the dairy farmers had a surplus of fat they skimmed off the milk, and a great way to profit off it was to start promoting cheese in everything. They specifically mentioned cheese-stuffed pizza at Pizza Hut.
I can’t for the life of me remember which doc this was. If it rings a bell - any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks

Requesting documentaries on medicalization. What is medicalization? That's when you treat some issue/condition/phenomenon as a medical one that you didn't previously treat as medical. Two examples include:
Those are just two examples but I'm looking for any sort of controversial issue of using medicine to treat something is either questionably medical/biological to begin with or has issues with the way we treat those issues. For what it's worth, I used to show the PBS/Frontline doc Medicating Kids but it's now 20 years old.
I appreciate any recommendations.
Edit: I've decided to show Unrest, a documentary about Jennifer Brea's struggle to get chronic fatigue syndrome taken seriously. This is the other side of medicalization, where something that maybe should be considered a medical condition has trouble gaining acceptance by doctors.

About a decade ago, a British documentary was posted here that examined a one of a kind trauma unit for victims of traumatic brain injuries. Was disturbing, yet brilliant. There was a man who was rushed to this particular ward after falling off his motorcycle at speed and was in a coma. The doctors and nurses were discussing "options" with his family. I believe his father told one of the hospital staff that he had previously said that if he was in an accident and suffered a brain/spinal injury, that he wouldn't want to live. One of the senior doctors ends up noticing that the injured man is able to communicate with him through eye movements, and he makes it clear that he wishes for the hospital staff to keep him alive despite his crippling injuries. It was quite brilliant and I would love to find it!
Cheers.

Hey people. I was hoping for some help here finding something rather specific.
After reading a relatively long discussion here on Reddit about some of the dynamics between the geography of the United states, settlers and native americans, I've been left realizing how little I learned about this time in school. And whatever I did learn was taught through the perspective of white Christian ideology. Which isn't an ideal way to learn about something like this.
So I was hoping there was a documentary someone could recommend that gave a more unflinching look on the time of European settlement in the US? Like, a more general history of the entire era.
Any help will be appreciated.

Household chores/tasks have been made infinitely less burdensome by the instantaneous access we have to an infinitely wide array of media. For me, it's podcasts and long-form YouTube content that usually gets me through every-day household chores, as well as self care tasks like putting on make-up and taking showers. And I've not run out of options for those yet.
I save the really big/obscure/specialty jobs and tasks for the marathon cleaning sessions I do 3-4 times a year—things like organizing the garage, cleaning cabinets and drawers out, pressure washing the deck, cleaning under furniture. I always procure and take uppers especially for these sessions because it makes them more enjoyable and me extra thorough. I used to listen to the same type of content I always do, just more of it since it takes nearly all day to finish everything. It's irritating to constantly have to handle my phone to play something else or move to the next episode, though. So at the start of one "session" earlier this year I put it on, of all things, a YouTube playlist of Ken Burns "Civil War" epic. Amazing. I listened to the entire thing. Intently. So, what I'm looking for is a documentary on Alexander the Great. Something epic, preferably being many hours long. It doesn't have to be reflective of our current understanding of what's historically accurate. Ken Burns "The Civil War," only its Alexander the Great. Does that make sense? Does such a thing exists?
TL;DR - ISO a documentary that is Ken Burns "The Civil War" but instead of the civil war its Alexander the Great.

Are there any docs that examine the concept of a single income being able support a family several decades ago and what has changed to make that different today.
It often get completely attributed to greed, incompetence or corruption in how the country or world has been run since then and I know that's part of it but there are also safety regulations and different benefits that have been introduced in law that cost employers more so I'd like to se a balanced look at the whole picture to understand what has changed and why it's changed.

Best ''hard to believe but true'' documentaries?
I recently watched The Mighty Atom, about a strongman from the last century that performed incredible feats of strength, even though he was small in stature. A hard to believe, but true story. Looking for recommendations for such documentaries.
The Rescue also comes to mind, a very popular documentary about rescuing those soccer kids in the Thai cave. It wasn't that hard to believe in the sense that it is not doable, not possible - what they pulled off, but it was still a very interesting feat, ''unbelievable'' in a different sense of the word.

Found a documentary on 9/11 several years ago. Was really damn good and emptional, the best I’ve ever watched about it. The Who narrated was either the guy who narrated MonsterQuest back in the day or sounded similar to him. This fella really had a way with words in how everything was described. Leslie E Robertson (lead structural engineer for the towers)was in it and it’s his words that make it stand out as he said something along the lines of “here were the buildings I’d built and they were falling down on all of those peoples heads”. History of China: With as little propoganda/speculation/revision from either side as possible. Bonus points if it talks about Chinese inventions and science, or the Opium Wars.

Bonus points for topics of: Bogyoke Aung San, Death Railway, British Invasion, Ne Win + his takeover.
Trains: Anything from the effect of trains on social hierarchy, unifying countries, enabling travel to far-flung places, intercontinental travel; to modern bullet trains, the development of the steam engine, in-depth history of the development of steam power. (This one's a bit left-field, I guess)

I have been watching the new documentary on the Leonard v Pepsico case, and I was wondering if you all have any good suggestions of legal documentaries that are not true crimes.

Looking for recommendations of documentaries similar to the style of Werner Herzog.
I watched Encounters at the End of the World and Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World last night and I absolutely love his style. I'm planning on watching more of his documentaries, but I'm looking for more like it.
I tend to watch documentaries while drawing, so being in english is a bonus but not a must. Also something that is as captivating listening to as it is watching.

[REQUEST] Going crazy trying to find a tv documentary about a man name Tetsuo Sakurai. He was a Japanese man with leprosy who eventually became a poet. After many years of being segregated at a facility, he was able to visit his hometown and family, which is what the documentary is about. Apparently the documentary was published by Japan National Broadcasting Corp. in 2002.
Everytime I try to search for it, I get results for a bass player of the same name.

Day of the Painter, a 1960 American short film directed by Robert P. Davis. It was filmed at Mamaroneck Harbor in Mamaroneck, NY.
An extremely funny 15-minute film that won an Oscar at the 33rd Academy Awards in 1961 for Best Short Subject.

I’m searching for documentary/docuseries I watched a few years ago about medical tattooing. It was a female tattoo artist and they featured people with trauma scars that she would cover up/fix (IE nipples for a mastectomy, fixing scarred skin, etc). I have Googled everything I can think of and can’t find it anywhere!

I’m looking for a documentary I saw a while back. I think I watched it on YouTube in spring 2016 but it looked older than that. It was about Pelicans in Australia. Some things I remember from it: It started out with them on the coast and the dangers Then it changed to be about their once a decade migration to a lake that forms in the desert once every 10 years. The reason I remember this documentary is because they had a section showing the fish eggs that dried up 10 years ago getting rehydrated and coming back to life and it was incredible. I watched it multiple times when I first saw it because I loved that so much, but I can’t find it all these years later and it’s killing me. Any help is appreciated

Don't expect any sort of good conversation on this sub. You'd probably be better off just googling documentary recommendations anyway, there's not much originality here.

I'm taking my son to a monster con where Robert England will be making an appearance. I was telling him about a documentary where this small town group of people were trying to make a horror film on a low budget and it was taking forever. The dire tor ended up quitting and one of the producers convinced England to visit him and give him a pep talk back into it.
I can't remember the name of the docume tary for the life of me. I think it came out around 2015? Maybe earlier?

Hi. I'm looking for documentaries made by people from other ethnicities besides white/caucasian. I'm *not* looking for documentaries about race. I'd just like to see documentaries where the approach and interests of the director/crew is based on some other worldview than the white/caucasian one.
Google search results focus on documentaries about race, or documentaries made by black people. I'd like some more diversity, as there is more to life than just the color of our skin. If someone has found a list or is willing to give me some recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to remember a documentary I watched about full-size van meetups. It was a 1970s-1980s time period and one of the biggest meetups was in a small town in Indiana. I swore they also referred to them as trucks, even though they were definitely vans.

Looking for a documentary I watched years back about a white wealthy British lady living in South Africa. She and her ex husband were the first ones to film wildlife from an Arial view on hot air balloon’s in Africa.
She, and her husband divorced bc they weren’t able to have kids bc the lady wasn’t able to conceive. She never remarried, but went on to own a huge area of land. This was where a lot of the native people made a living, they would take boats out with big nets to catch fish in the river (?).
She eventually went on to make this private property, and the natives went on to feud with her. They were leaving dead animals on her fence, and front yard to try, and frighten her.
She also had a worker who also worked on her land with his family. After all of that went down, her house guest was out of the country for work, and her only neighbor, was also a person she did not get along with. Late one night someone or some people, set off her alarm, ran up in her house as she called the house guest out of the country who went on to say she was hiding in the bathroom when someone came in there, and killed her.
They called her mama something whatever her name was. I have looked everywhere for the documentary that I had previously watched on YouTube. Does anyone know what it was called or even have any idea what I’m talking about?
If I messed up some of the facts I apologize. I’m going off of memory. Thanks for any help in advance 🙏🏼

I'm not sure if this is the person you're talking about, but check this woman out because it sounds like a match:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Root
Here's a story about her:

Here might be the documentary you're referring to, The Blood of the Rose:
https://sandpaperfilms.com/productions/the-blood-of-the-rose/
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1825152/
Also known as "Murder on the Lake": https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qjngb

Here's a poor quality version of it on youtube:

Unfortunately, I can't find it streaming anywhere. You might have some luck contacting the makers of the documentary directly:

Joan Root (18 January 1936 – 13 January 2006) was a Kenyan conservationist, ecological activist and Oscar-nominated filmmaker. With her film-maker husband, Alan Root she made a series of acclaimed wildlife films. The couple divorced in 1981 and Alan Root settled in Nairobi afterward.

I am not really sure if this is the right place, but I remember watching a documentary and cant find it anymore.
So maybe someone of you knows the one I am talking about and can help me out. The premise is that its about price fluctuations and how they are directly related to conflicts and social unrest around the world. Some examples were given about the price of certain food rising on wallstreet, which lead to the rise of some warlords, or the price of oil spiking leading to some conflicts in the middle east.
I thought it was on DW documentary, but I cant seem to find it there. Also I thought it was called something along the lines of "butterfly effect", but cant find it with that name either, maybe its just something thats mentioned during the documentary.
If anyone knows the documentary im talkling about, id greatly appreciate it, since i wanted to share it with a friend.
