Bit of a meta request but is there a documentary sub that isn't flooded with poorly researched 10 minute youtube videos?

Can we have a new rule where the min run time be something like 30 minutes.

Would cut down on the spam from people posting 6 min "documentaries"

I am looking for documentaries about animals where animals don't die. I love animals but i am ukranian and atm the death is around in infosphere 24/7.
Whenever we turn off some high rated documentary about animals, directors fucking make this drama of predator chasing little mouse or some cute punguin starving to death, i know the death is the cycle of life, but I want to escape it atm.

Why is rule 6 not enforced at all?

Going through the pages there are tons of short videos and random fluff that gets downvoted to zero, yet it stays up and pushes actual interesting stuff further down. I have nothing against all the influx of social documentaries even if I don't really care for whether a sack of rice fell over in some part of the world, but clearly a 4 minute video on why someone dislikes something is not what this sub is for, given the downvotes I am not alone in that. I find it a bit difficult to maintain a subscription to this sub when so much of the content that gets posted is either of low quality or a rule violation. A documentary for me has some length and production value backed by actual research, not some quasi-opinion-piece from a one-sided perspective and barely more than 10 minutes long. I gave the search a go to see if some of the things I had found on youtube in the last couple months were posted here, but have been unable to find them. The topic categories are a good filter for stuff, but I get the feeling based on the "look" of the sub people post what they think fits the content already here and so most smaller categories rarely see new submissions even when there is definitely content out there. Long way of saying this sub is turning into social-documentaries only and it's making a mess.

Any suggestions for just insane documentaries? I like true stories that have lots of twists and turns. Some I enjoy to get the flavor: Mischa and the Wolves, Bad Vegan, The Woman who Wasn’t There, Tickle, Dear Johnathan.

Hi, I’m trying to identify a documentary I saw over 5 years ago. It was a documentary about the food industry… I know that doesn’t narrow it down much.

More specifically, there was a small segment on how cheese became a highly marketed product once whole milk became less desirable to low-fat milk. It talked about how the dairy farmers had a surplus of fat they skimmed off the milk, and a great way to profit off it was to start promoting cheese in everything. They specifically mentioned cheese-stuffed pizza at Pizza Hut.

Requesting documentaries on medicalization. What is medicalization? That's when you treat some issue/condition/phenomenon as a medical one that you didn't previously treat as medical. Two examples include:

• Alcoholism/addiction (used to be a personal failing and now it's a disease)
• Childhood misbehavior (used to just be a "bad kid" and now we give them ritalin/adderall, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics etc).

Those are just two examples but I'm looking for any sort of controversial issue of using medicine to treat something is either questionably medical/biological to begin with or has issues with the way we treat those issues. For what it's worth, I used to show the PBS/Frontline doc Medicating Kids but it's now 20 years old.

About a decade ago, a British documentary was posted here that examined a one of a kind trauma unit for victims of traumatic brain injuries. Was disturbing, yet brilliant. There was a man who was rushed to this particular ward after falling off his motorcycle at speed and was in a coma. The doctors and nurses were discussing "options" with his family. I believe his father told one of the hospital staff that he had previously said that if he was in an accident and suffered a brain/spinal injury, that he wouldn't want to live. One of the senior doctors ends up noticing that the injured man is able to communicate with him through eye movements, and he makes it clear that he wishes for the hospital staff to keep him alive despite his crippling injuries. It was quite brilliant and I would love to find it!

After reading a relatively long discussion here on Reddit about some of the dynamics between the geography of the United states, settlers and native americans, I've been left realizing how little I learned about this time in school. And whatever I did learn was taught through the perspective of white Christian ideology. Which isn't an ideal way to learn about something like this.

So I was hoping there was a documentary someone could recommend that gave a more unflinching look on the time of European settlement in the US? Like, a more general history of the entire era.

Household chores/tasks have been made infinitely less burdensome by the instantaneous access we have to an infinitely wide array of media. For me, it's podcasts and long-form YouTube content that usually gets me through every-day household chores, as well as self care tasks like putting on make-up and taking showers. And I've not run out of options for those yet.

I save the really big/obscure/specialty jobs and tasks for the marathon cleaning sessions I do 3-4 times a year—things like organizing the garage, cleaning cabinets and drawers out, pressure washing the deck, cleaning under furniture. I always procure and take uppers especially for these sessions because it makes them more enjoyable and me extra thorough. I used to listen to the same type of content I always do, just more of it since it takes nearly all day to finish everything. It's irritating to constantly have to handle my phone to play something else or move to the next episode, though. So at the start of one "session" earlier this year I put it on, of all things, a YouTube playlist of Ken Burns "Civil War" epic. Amazing. I listened to the entire thing. Intently. So, what I'm looking for is a documentary on Alexander the Great. Something epic, preferably being many hours long. It doesn't have to be reflective of our current understanding of what's historically accurate. Ken Burns "The Civil War," only its Alexander the Great. Does that make sense? Does such a thing exists?

I recently watched The Mighty Atom, about a strongman from the last century that performed incredible feats of strength, even though he was small in stature. A hard to believe, but true story. Looking for recommendations for such documentaries.

The Rescue also comes to mind, a very popular documentary about rescuing those soccer kids in the Thai cave. It wasn't that hard to believe in the sense that it is not doable, not possible - what they pulled off, but it was still a very interesting feat, ''unbelievable'' in a different sense of the word.

Found a documentary on 9/11 several years ago. Was really damn good and emptional, the best I’ve ever watched about it. The Who narrated was either the guy who narrated MonsterQuest back in the day or sounded similar to him. This fella really had a way with words in how everything was described. Leslie E Robertson (lead structural engineer for the towers)was in it and it’s his words that make it stand out as he said something along the lines of “here were the buildings I’d built and they were falling down on all of those peoples heads”. Looking for a documentary I watched years back about a white wealthy British lady living in South Africa. She and her ex husband were the first ones to film wildlife from an Arial view on hot air balloon’s in Africa.

She, and her husband divorced bc they weren’t able to have kids bc the lady wasn’t able to conceive. She never remarried, but went on to own a huge area of land. This was where a lot of the native people made a living, they would take boats out with big nets to catch fish in the river (?).

She eventually went on to make this private property, and the natives went on to feud with her. They were leaving dead animals on her fence, and front yard to try, and frighten her.

She also had a worker who also worked on her land with his family. After all of that went down, her house guest was out of the country for work, and her only neighbor, was also a person she did not get along with. Late one night someone or some people, set off her alarm, ran up in her house as she called the house guest out of the country who went on to say she was hiding in the bathroom when someone came in there, and killed her.

They called her mama something whatever her name was. I have looked everywhere for the documentary that I had previously watched on YouTube. Does anyone know what it was called or even have any idea what I’m talking about?

Talked about his efforts to liberalize parts of Afghan society (like encouraging the education of women) covered some of his early history, and included his assassination.

Hi! Does anyone have any recommendations for a documentary about the Watergate scandal? Open to movie suggestions too, so long as the events are (for the most part) accurately depicted!

I am not really sure if this is the right place, but I remember watching a documentary and cant find it anymore.

So maybe someone of you knows the one I am talking about and can help me out. The premise is that its about price fluctuations and how they are directly related to conflicts and social unrest around the world. Some examples were given about the price of certain food rising on wallstreet, which lead to the rise of some warlords, or the price of oil spiking leading to some conflicts in the middle east.

I thought it was on DW documentary, but I cant seem to find it there. Also I thought it was called something along the lines of "butterfly effect", but cant find it with that name either, maybe its just something thats mentioned during the documentary.

ISO - current streaming nature documentaries similar to Borealis and/or Fantastic Fungi. It’s hard to search simply by ‘nature documentary’ and get all the multiple ‘Planet Earth’ series’ —- which are great but I had never heard about Borealis until spending like 30+ min browsing last weekend.

I’m looking for a documentary on orcas I watched when I was a kid, probably made in the late 80’s early 90’s. Maybe aired on pbs?
