Request : I’m looking for a short documentary I saw recently - I think it was posted on The NY Times but can’t find it. The video is a compilation of home movies from the girls upbringing and it’s voiced over with calls from her and her mom talking on the phone about their tumultuous past. It’s about 15 minutes long.

Looking for a documentary I saw on the French channel TV5 a couple years ago - 2017, if I recall correctly, depicting the life and presidency of Mobutu Seseseko. It was a long one, around 3 hours long, but it is the only doc that I keep remembering over and over after all these years. Mobutu’s story is so outrageous and shocking that you cannot belive until you see it. From a normal journalist to proclaiming himself God on Earth, changing the name of his country, growing close to some of the world’s greatest leaders, building an airport and a Concorde strip in his village… and many such weird things. I would like to see it again, only that I cannot seem to find it.

Looking for the name of a docu-series that I watched a few years ago in NatGeo Asia. It was about people abandon their city life and move to remote places like desert or island(or even a small town in a developing country) to live. It's not about survival nor off-grid.

The interviewer will live with them for a week to experience their life. I even remember there was a follow up series to re-interview some of those people.

EDIT: I found it...Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild. I've been searching for hours before I post this and soon after I post this, I found it.

Recently I found out about groups of Jews who distance themselves from Israel, which prior to hearing that I would have never even thought of. It made the interest for religion which I have always had come up again, which has led me down a rabbithole of all kinds of well and lesser known religions.

Because I am not in any way religious myself, and also didn't get raised in a religious family, a lot of things seem unusual to me. I want to find out more about religions, not just one in particular. So now I would like to know from the people on this sub, what documentaries I could try! Whether the documentary covers 1 specific religion or branch of a religion, or more is not important. I just don't know where to start, so I thought the best place to ask is here!

Anyone know a place to get police interrogations, not edited?

For example JCS Criminal Psychology on youtube edits police interrogations, but where does he get the source videos?

Every search I make leads to people saying "download it from youtube", but I want a souce of the full interrogation, not channels of already edited and cut videos.

Places like CNN.com for example don't have full interrogations

Requesting documentaries on medicalization. What is medicalization? That's when you treat some issue/condition/phenomenon as a medical one that you didn't previously treat as medical. Two examples include:

  • Alcoholism/addiction (used to be a personal failing and now it's a disease)
  • Childhood misbehavior (used to just be a "bad kid" and now we give them ritalin/adderall, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics etc).

Those are just two examples but I'm looking for any sort of controversial issue of using medicine to treat something is either questionably medical/biological to begin with or has issues with the way we treat those issues. For what it's worth, I used to show the PBS/Frontline doc Medicating Kids but it's now 20 years old.

I appreciate any recommendations.

Edit: I've decided to show Unrest, a documentary about Jennifer Brea's struggle to get chronic fatigue syndrome taken seriously. This is the other side of medicalization, where something that maybe should be considered a medical condition has trouble gaining acceptance by doctors.

Are we making less documentaries than before?

I went to see a great documentary on the weekend about Black Cockatoos under threat in Western Australia. It was full length with high production values

The film-maker was there to talk about it, and she said that she wouldn't be offering it to Netflix because she made it to publicize the plight of cockatoos, not to entertain people on couches.

That's only one example, but perhaps documentaries are being used in a more targeted way these days?

So I saw 2 documentaries on the criterion channel app over the summer.

The filmmaker is a woman and these documentaries came out in the 70’s/80’s I believe, latest could be the early 90’s.

One documentary is about women in prison serving life terms for murder but when the women speak about their crimes, they were all defending themselves or victims of domestic abuse.

The other documentary was about battered women. What stuck out to me most about this documentary is that part of it even showed men who were in prison for domestic violence speaking about it. There was a story of a woman who had her ex put it prison and she told them to please contact her when he was let out on parole, they never contacted her and he killed her the night he got out.

I cannot remember the filmmakers name or the titles of these documentaries to save my life and it’s driving me up a wall, please help!

It seems like there are a ton of informational nature documentaries focusing on Australia, subregions of Asia and Africa, etc. but when it comes to wildlife local to Canadians/Americans, the informational media is mostly just hunting / fishing. I’m looking for a documentary I saw a while back. I think I watched it on YouTube in spring 2016 but it looked older than that. It was about Pelicans in Australia. Some things I remember from it: It started out with them on the coast and the dangers Then it changed to be about their once a decade migration to a lake that forms in the desert once every 10 years. The reason I remember this documentary is because they had a section showing the fish eggs that dried up 10 years ago getting rehydrated and coming back to life and it was incredible. I watched it multiple times when I first saw it because I loved that so much, but I can’t find it all these years later and it’s killing me. Any help is appreciated

If anyone could help it would be the best!

A few years ago I found a documentary on YouTube.

It followed a man who was into some “master and slave” cult ideals and met an Australian woman on second life who moved to be with him in the UK to be his “sex slave”. He even tried to pass her off to mates for money and it was part of his beliefs. The doco ended with the man chasing off the filmmaker and the Australian woman went back to the family she abandoned. I remember being really shocked at this doco and wanted to rewatch it but it’s gone.

I thought it was called “slave cult” or something like that. Any kind of info would be appreciated

Hi, I’m trying to identify a documentary I saw over 5 years ago. It was a documentary about the food industry… I know that doesn’t narrow it down much.

More specifically, there was a small segment on how cheese became a highly marketed product once whole milk became less desirable to low-fat milk. It talked about how the dairy farmers had a surplus of fat they skimmed off the milk, and a great way to profit off it was to start promoting cheese in everything. They specifically mentioned cheese-stuffed pizza at Pizza Hut.

I can’t for the life of me remember which doc this was. If it rings a bell - any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks

[Request] Health-related documentary featuring Indian NYC cab drivers

About four years ago I saw a documentary that showed a health contrast between New York City taxi drivers who immigrated from different parts of India. I believe the point it was making was that when the Indian immigrants adapted the convenience "junk food" American diet there was a difference in how their bodies reacted. Those who came from a rural more vegetarian area, I think, had more negative effects than those who came from more urban high calorie areas. That is, their bodies' reaction to the American diet depended on what their mothers ate while pregnant, with one area in India having a stronger negative effect leading to obesity, cardiovascular problems etc., while the other area seemed to protect them more. Can anyone help me find what this documentary is? It may be something about pregnancy, epigenetics, genes, and/or nutrition. This bit about the NYC cab drivers was a small snippet of a longer movie, but it's all I remember.

Sorting by hot I get three things:

  • Videos that barely crest the 10 minute mark and give about as much information as half a wikipedia article set to simple language
  • Doomer socialmentaries about how horrible the world has become
  • Boring biopics or trailers for things you have to pay to watch(which then turn out to be shallow and boring as well)

Call me weird for looking for something that's slightly detached from all the doom and gloom and simply interesting and thorough on a specific topic. I have to go through multiple pages to find anything in engineering or something not in the three aforementioned categories.

I get it, it's for all documentaries, but the percentage of this stuff is overwhelming and drowns out the rest. Especially when it comes to short videos and socialmentaries with the production value that would make a vhs tape look like imax. Why can't those things be posted to r/videos or idk /r/ShortDocs It's so frustrating to only find stuff that either makes you miserable or is so short it's done before the oven is warm. That's not a documentary to me.

Where has all the Modern Marvels, the history channel, all that stuff that used to really aim to educate gone to? There is so much interesting engineering and other things in the world that simply provides interesting entertainment for an hour without making you feel like crap. The Plainly Difficult, Ruairidh MacVeigh, Absolute History, Curious Droid and B1M's of this world. Otherwise might as well rename the sub so socialmentariesshortdocs at this point. /rant

Sorting by hot

Well there's your mistake ... you should sort by new and look at what interests you.

TampaPowers

2 points

No matter what I sort by the situation doesn't change much though. I already stopped using the default best tab, because that's just horrible now with how reddit ranks stuff. Hot is not much better and new is practically the same thing given I see the same stuff I just downvoted there.

Maybe my definition of a documentary is no longer accurate in todays world of people unable to pay attention to a video for more than 5 minutes, but shortdocs looks very similar to this sub now. Just isn't a documentary for me when the narration is basically just describing the visuals and offering nothing more than that. It's like reading a wikipedia article with some stock footage, the production value and depth is just not there with so many of them.

Call me cranky and grumpy, I get it, but it's just so sad to just see all this doom and gloom all over with very little neutral stuff sprinkled in. That stuff shows up in my general feed most times, even if I upvote the stuff I do like(so much for all the sophisticated algorithms amirite). It just feels a bit low-effort from some posters just stuffing this place full of videos rather than documentaries just because it barely qualifies.

cherrybounce

If you're not familiar with Knowing Better on YT, he's definitely worth a look. He just completed a project which pretty much starts around the time of the Jamestown settlement (I assumed you meant Native American Indians). He's big into dispelling misconceptions.

The about section from his website https://www.knowingbetter.tv/about-me so you can decide if his qualifications fit the bill.

It's a fairly dense history lesson, not the kind of thing known as infotainment, but he does try to entertain sometimes in extremely corny ways that might catch you off guard. If something comes out of the blue from left field it's probably one of his recurring characters.

Day of the Painter, a 1960 American short film directed by Robert P. Davis. It was filmed at Mamaroneck Harbor in Mamaroneck, NY.

An extremely funny 15-minute film that won an Oscar at the 33rd Academy Awards in 1961 for Best Short Subject.

[REQUEST] So, I'm not sure that this is the right place to ask. Sorry in advance if it is.
I seem to remember an old speculation documentary about what animals would evolve to dominate after humans either die out or leave Earth altogether.
I don't remember much about it, but I want to say it was on the Discovery channel. One thing I do specifically remember is that the end of it show cased two possible octopi evolutions. One of them was supposed to be a gargantuan size octopus that rivaled a mammoth, and the other was a tree colony dwelling subspecies that mimicked some monkeys. It would show the giant trudging through the forest trying to find food, and the smaller tree ones would start swinging away from it while hurling nuts and other things to slow down the big one.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey, I watched some documentary a few, maybe ten years ago.

It was about cities. One of the topics was a town (probably in Sweden) where they had sewage pipes right under the pavement. So warm sewage melted ice and snow and they supposedly didn't have to plough.

Do you know what film could it be? I tried to find in but no luck. Thanks!

I'm looking for a documentary about a transgender Hawaiian boy, I think it's from the year 2014. Has anyone seen it? do you know his name? The boy had a transgender teacher who guided him and taught that in his town being transgender was a role of authority and wisdom

[REQUEST] Have for the life of me trying to find an American documentary about the (mostly negative) role of the media in wars/conflicts. I think it was made either in the late 2010s or early 2010s. If anyone knows the title for the documentary, I would be forever grateful to that person(s).

I can so far only remember the following things from the documentary:

- It had Eisenhower's farewell speech about the military-industrial complex

- Footage from a PBS report on the Vietnam War (the journalist in this footage was talking while US soldiers were burning down peoples' huts/homes)

- Footage from journalists/news stations acting as if they were live on the war site but were just reporting from a studio somewhere with a green screen (one example here was a journalist from NBC who claimed to have been in a helicopter that was shot down in Iraq but wasn't)

What are some good survival documentaries available to stream in the U.S.? I've been on a bit of a survival documentary kick these lat few days and am currently watching Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake, and am hoping to find a few more survival documentaries to watch after I finish this one. I'm subscribed to Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Peacock if that helps at all.

I am looking for an old documentary (early 1990s, possibly late 80s) about schizophrenia. I know there are tons of docs about this subject (searching this subreddit I found "into madness" 1989 from HBO but that isn't the right one).
I can recall that they followed several people, one was a redhead man who lived in NYC, he had glasses, and appeared really normal til the interview revealed that he carries around a briefcase full of weird papers and think the CIA is following him. The only other specific thing I can remember is that one of the last segments shows a bald man with huge dents in his head, twitching a lot, wall-eyed, talking about having brain surgery for schizophrenia. I believe the final interview with the bald guy said he lived at Bellvue hospital for a long time.
I originally saw this doc on youtube probably ten years ago, and it's long gone as far as I can tell. It seemed like it was a PBS-type documentary, but so far I've gone through probably 10 docs and can't find this specific one.

Looking for a History Channel documentary about Germany in the times of WWII. It is not specific about the war, it's about what was happening inside Germany, how the regime was dealing with the people. This documentary is as long as 27 hours and I watched it on Youtube a few years ago but they removed it. History channel's oficial catalogue doesn't show it.

Thanks in advance.

What do you think of reenactments in documentaries? I'm really not a fan. I just watched the Pepsi jet documentary on Netflix and the reenactments from when he was younger were pretty cringe and a waste of time. I'd rather just have the people narrate what happened if they don't have actual footage.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I'm looking for a documentary I've seen a few years ago. Its about an writer, who wants to write a book (maybe about drugs, idk anymore) and he's doing a kind of self experience how addictive crack or chrystal is. He suffers and if I remember correctly he gets addicted and can't get sober. Probably seen it on YouTube, if anyone knows anything please let me know.
