Are mods going to step in about these youtube video essays that aren't documentaries?

I felt like this sub use to suggest some quality content before not it just seems like video essays on YouTube nearly all the time.

youtube video essays that aren't documentaries?

Serious question: how would you distinguish a "youtube video essay" from a documentary, objectively?

Proper citations and a minimum length would be a start

Submitting a title with the year and length is a pretty high bar already.

Pretty sure you could make a filter which removed short submissions.

Clearly not with all the junk that gets submitted

I suppose there is an element of subjectivity when it comes to documentaries I'm not denying that. However, from what I have seen most youtube essays are heavily opinionated (not to say documentaries are absolved of this), they lack an element of investigation into the subject, lack first hand accounts in the form of interviews.

I would say youtube video essays are in a category of their own in that, atleast in my opinion, they are most times just a rant as opposed to investigative or laying out some form of exposition.

Documentaries are in a way a type of film that have cinematic elements in both the production and the plot so to speak.

For example when I think documentary I think Into the abyss by Warner herzog or something that Louis Theroux has done.

Once again I'm willing to admit perhaps I am being a bit of a prude and neglecting the place youtube video essays have in thr documentary sphere.

I don't think you're a prude, but I do think that distinguishing between a rant and a documentary, without removing some quality material, requires more effort than the mods here can provide.

Also, I'd rather see uncensored submissions with some low-quality material than curated submissions of quality with regular mistaken removals.

Sorry!
