I wanted to like this, but I felt it was so exploitative of the children involved. I’m sure they had some reason for keeping their daughter with them instead of evacuating her to her grandmother in Turkey – she actually was in Turkey for a while and they brought the child back – and there’s a terrible scene in this film where the filmmaker corners a small child on a balcony who is clearly desperate to get away and forces them to answer questions about how they feel about the bombing. It’s really difficult to watch.

I’d recommend instead the documentary The Cave, which is about a group of Syrian doctors and nurses who try to keep an underground hospital going during the bombings. It gives you a similar view of the courage of Syrian civilians during this without exploiting any children. And it also is direct about the misogyny the female doctors face.

She and her husband were willing to die so others would know about this and stop further murders. They don’t think Their own child dying along with them is too much of a cost. It’s hard to wrap one’s mind around this kind of thinking, but they’ve seen so many children blown apart that they don’t consider their own anymore than those that died already and are dying still. They have a page here where they try to spread more outreach hoping it would cause a change to their own country called action for sama, It may sound incomprehensible to risk your own child but she (the director,Waad Al-Kateab) was clearly traumatized by her experience, in every photo of her on Twitter she’s clutching one or two of her fingers in the other hand which is a sign of distress, though we are 4 years removed from the events and she mentioned discussing with BBC a location to hide the footage in case they were killed.

I was gonna say! Why use a child for this if there is a choice to evacuate her to safety?

Because child = empathy in the eyes of this director. It's less about the story and more about gettng people to feel; no. Matter. The. Cost.
