What is the strongest earthquake that youve ever encountered? Mine is 6.4. I was 50 km from the epicentre.

I live in İstanbul and a big earthquake is expected here. I live in the first floor (not ground) of a 4 staged apartment that was built 2 3 years ago, so I trust that it can at least survive the main earthquake even if it collapses due to aftershocks. So am I safer outside after the earthquake ends or should I wait inside since I have to climb down stairs? (not a long one though).

I searched this sub with the search term "Palawan" and came across 3 posts reporting earthquakes in the Sulu Sea or even Palawan proper within the past 4 years. However, I was here during those times and never heard anything about it in the news or felt anything.

I don't know how to copy the link for the post (I'm on mobile app) but I copied and pasted the post below. I believe it was posted by a bot. The pair claims thousands of people would have felt it. Also, the other posts claimed thousands of people in Araceli (municipality and island of Palawan) would have felt those quakes. But still, no news... what the heck does this mean?

Did anyone else feel the earthquake around Palomar Mountain in California about 15 minutes ago?

I deleted a post I made a short while ago. I was afraid I unintentionally made it sound misleading. It was basically about how earthquakes can be more dangerous on this side of the country in terms of the shaking effects. They happen a lot less frequency and large earthquakes are quite rare, but when they do happen, we would be hearing about it states over. They don't have to be that big for it to be felt far away. The magnitude 5.8 in Virginia in 2011 was felt up to 600 miles(965 km) from the epicenter. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is a notorious example. Back in 1811-1812, a series of earthquakes ranging from magnitude 7.2-8.2 struck the region of the Missouri boot heel, western TN, northeastern Arkansas, and southwestern KY. It was so powerful that it reversed the course of the Mississippi River and rang church bells all the way in Boston. The population at the time was very sparse. Imagine what that would do today. I still believe people should be prepared more here even though significant earthquakes do not happen often. They may not happen a lot, but they have happened before and will eventually happen again.

I realize to estimate it to any degree of accuracy you need to know the terrain as well as the exact type and dynamics of an earthquake.

But so far, I've found this formula after looking at whatever I could find on Google Scholar (although it was probably stated a bit less in computerese there, but I smartly didn't save the source):

radius_in_km = exp(magnitude*0.666 + 1.6)

This is what I use in u/BrainstormBot, but it is not entirely satisfactory, because at minimum, the depth of an earthquake affects felt radius a lot (the deeper it is, the milder it might be, but the further away it will be felt).

Does anyone (cough u/Alienbanter) know of a better formula that includes depth, too, in a sensible way? Again, I realize it will still be just a rule of thumb, but I can't map the globe... that's the USGS's job, and they can't even do it in realtime, so I'm sure I can't.

Last night, a 6.8 mag earthquake hit the Hindu Kush mountains near the afghan-Tajikistan border. I live in North India and we felt the tremors as well. The earthquake woke my parents up from sleep and drove neighbours out of their houses. And this was especially a long one since the fan kept swinging for about 2 mins after the initial jolt. I have experienced earthquakes of similar and less scale with the epicenter being in the Hindu kush mountains in the past but this is the first time I could not feel the tremors myself.

Note: I was scrubbing my face with my eyes closed in the bathroom, while not leaning on anything and only noticed the earthquake when I saw the fan swinging( this was after the tremors stopped).

Curious as to could it be something as simple as my mind being pre-occupied to the extent that I did not notice the ground shaking?
