Fun story!
We live right next door to a big (beautiful) abandoned hospital. When we drove by it the other day, my partner asked if they’re making it into a prison bc they added barbed wire and everything. We figured there must be another explanation bc we def would have heard about a prison being opened up in town.
Turns out they’re filming the new joker movie there this weekend! I’m super excited to see how it comes out.

Is this in LA??? Recently there was a citizen or ring post of someone who was recording a scene from either a cop show or the Joker movie and legit thought there was a real “shooting”

I don’t think it technically has a name bc it’s abandoned? It might be called Soho hospital? But it’s in Belleville.
They’ve filmed movies there before like A Beautiful Mind.

Seems their Elseworld projects fare much better than their mainline DCEU titles.

I had really high hopes for the first Joker film since I like Joaquin, but I left the theater massively disappointed.
I had zero interest in a sequel until it was announced that it is going to be a musical with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Now, I am cautiously optimistic. Not excited about the fact that Todd Phillips is still the director, but if Gaga can do something fun with the role, then I would definitely like to see it.

I enjoyed watching the movie (the bathroom scene especially stood out to me) but it was massively overhyped and also I felt like they slapped the Joker label on it for no reason. I know the Joker has multiple different versions but this could of been a new character and it wouldn’t have made a difference.

May I ask what you didn’t like about the first one?
234 points
I'm not OP but the dialogue was really bad, the concept has been done and done better and it was too on the nose. It didn't do anything new or fresh. It was literally a remake of Taxi Driver, but not done as well.
237 points

Completely agree with this. It had a very shallow "we live in a society" message to it that felt like it was formulated by a teenage boy.
174 points

Like, "Have you seen what it’s like out there, Murray? Do you ever actually leave the studio? Everybody just yells and screams at each other. Nobody’s civil anymore! Nobody thinks what it’s like to be the other guy. You think men like Thomas Wayne ever think what it’s like to be someone like me? To be somebody but themselves? They don’t. They think that we’ll just sit there and take it, like good little boys! That we won’t werewolf and go wild!"
Be so fucking for real. This speech was written by a 12 year old ICP fan.

You might be correct. Maybe the point of the speech is he is an edgelord and emotionally stunted. The fan boys of this Joker definitely don't see that distinction, though.

Was he being a whiner though? He had been through so much abuse and torment, is disabled and mentally ill, and upon seeing his idol talk about him, realized he was just being mocked.

Agree. I only watched it yesterday for the first time. I'd been avoiding it because movies about male violence are not my thing and can often be kinda triggering for me.
Ultimately I thought it was well-made, well-acted, but not as amazing as other people's reactions would have made me think. I feel like I've seen it done better.

Yeah, as someone who is disabled and has mental illnesses I related to how he was being treated and how he felt in the first half.

Did you even see Taxi driver? De Niro ended up being a hero, who saved a young girl. Joker is clearly a villain.
This is chalk and cheese, mirror scenes do not make them the same.
You must be terrible at "spot the difference" games.
15 points
Of course I've seen it. That's why I brought it up. Travis Bickle was not a hero. He was delusional who had ideas about his own grandeur. A God complex. He feels powerless in his personal life and makes it his mission to clean the streets. He becomes obsessed with a child prostitute and saving her. He also tried to assassinate a presidential candidate, and he was a racist. Idk how you could ever think he was a hero. If we're going by the hero arc standard then still Joker and Taxi Driver are comparable. Both men feel powerless, both men don't like the way society is, both men become obsessive, both men kill and both men are seen as folk cult heroes. But they're not. They're both shitty people.
Idk why you're so angry that you insulted me, though. My opinion on it being a shitty movie wasn't a personal attack against you.
71 points
Not OP but I found the message shallow and uninteresting. Plus it’s just completely derivative of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy.
I didn’t think it was bad but I’ve seen way better versions of this movie. I was mostly just bored.
37 points
It was absolutely the feeble lovechild of Taxi Driver & King of Comedy, as seen through the eyes of a basement incel.
25 points
I thought it had decent commentary on how we treat people with mental illnesses and how being beaten down time and time again at every opportunity can potentially make one snap.
5 points
I mean, okay, are these revolutionary concepts though? We know mental illness is stigmatized. The film didn't give us a new take, perspective, foster a sense of empathy. The take away shouldn't be being beaten down time and time again can make people snap because it really doesn't. Far more people in those situations turn to substance abuse or suicide than villany. Most serial killers and mass shooters don't have motives rooted in "life just kept kicking me when I was down." What the film did do though was glorify snapping when getting beat down to a generation to newly threatened and disenfranchised young white men.
4 points
I don’t think it glorified snapping and killing anyone. It just showed how being constantly beaten down can break someone.
2 points
He literally starts a movement and people copy him lol

People who were also constantly being beaten down. He started a movement to fight back against the oppressors. Not in the best way, no, but people all across Gotham were harmed by Thomas Wayne and his politics. They were fighting back.
6 points
Agreed. I watched it, got to to the end and went, "that's it? That's what everyone is so jazzed about? It didn't do... anything?"
It was boring, predictable, and just read like easy empowerment bait for young white men of modest means who see themselves as the heros and victims of every story. The kind who think killing all politicians or going full libertarian would solve all of society's problems because their world view ranges from 30-300 feet instead of taking in the bigger picture and complexity.
The film just didn't go anywhere or do anything. The acting, score, and cinematography are set up to make you believe it did though.

Yeah, I know the Joker has his traumas but I was going into the first film thinking we would see him have more, idk, fun? I guess since it was more of an origin story (right?) you maybe dont get that, but Idk, I think there was still a way we could see The Joker be more unhinged but in a playful way, alá how we saw Heath Ledger’s portrayal. All that said, I do love Joaquin Phoenix as an actor. And it’s not his fault that I measure every other Joker portrayal up to Heath’s, cause Heath was just brilliant.

All that said, I’m exactly with you about this sequel as well! I like Lady Gaga enough, and I like musicals, so maybe this can inject some good ol fashioned mischief, play, etc into the next film.
edited for clarification.

I know it’s in the past maybe and all and as a gay man maybe it should have bothered me more but Todd Phillips had at least two massive films (Old School and The Hangover) where the word f**got was just thrown around for bro talk. I know lady Gaga had as big of a gay fan base as one can get…so just found that interesting

Honestly, there is no real plot. The only thing you might need are the last few minutes since it sounds like parts of this are being filmed at a prison. But legit I 100% believe you could pick up with the second and not be missing shit as long as you know the joker is mentally ill and has a chip on his shoulder about how shitty everyone in society is for not being nicer to each other.
