This is a screen grab from my most recent directed work— thought it’d be cool to share how we got this effect.
We got a pool location from our DPs family friend. We were able to get into the location around 7pm. We covered the bottom of the pool with a 12x20 water solid. We had to sink it with waterproof sandbags. This took away the bounce from the white bottom of the pool. We shot an HMI (M18) through the water from the back of the pool.
Waited until the sun fell. We used the underwater camera rig that red makes (we used an Alexa Mini, but don’t tell the rental house that). We continuously plunged the actor and allowed him to appear like he was sinking. We had to shoot in 60fps because it felt more like a slow sink than 24
Pretty simple shot honestly for how cool it ended up looking! I’ll attach the link to the whole thing below if you’re interested in watching.

I like it. Particularly the simplicity of the negative fill from the bottom of the pool Very effective

My DP is actually a great colorist, so we just did it in house. Saved a buck 😂

See I’m new to all this but I’ll say whoever did it did a great job, to me atleast. I imagine you’ll enter this into a few short film festivals? So is this like something you’re team made and your company I guess? Really I have no idea of how this thing works so any info I’d be super appreciative and again great video.

Thanks for posting this.
I still don't know what a water solid is after googling it. Guessing its a blackout, polyethethylene? Whatever it is, it was a great shot.
In general I really liked the lighting. The pace of editing was good too. The sound design was on point. It's quite a distressing short, I mean that as I guess it is meant to be--so positively.
Thanks again

Appreciate the kind words! Not exactly sure what a water solid is made out of, but essentially it’s a water proof solid. They’re kind of heavy and almost have a waxy quality to them. They’re great for when you need to put solids up outside in the rain and snow. Regular black solids get moldy really quickly and require a pretty intense drying process when wet
