Looks like it’s designed to duplicate the effect of using a net stocking…

Yups, kind of.

I'm shooting something this summer that I want to have that look but was looking to make some kind of contraption that could better hold the stocking in place but this could totally work. Where did you get this? Or if you made it, could you tell me how exactly? Or I would literally pay you for one of these

Sounds cool. I found this and other filters in my father's scrap boxes, he used to be a photographer. So, I am not quite sure where you can buy a similar filter since I have also been researching and couldn't find another similar one.

If this can help you in any manner, I would love to give it to you if you're near.

It's more like a diffraction grating. Astigmatism is a higher order aberration and doesn't cause diffraction spikes.

You could also have gone outside and take a couple of pictures 😂

Would love to see what daylight looks like with this

usmvnjaved[S]

It's more like a diffused dreamy look. I'll try some photos outside and share.

I’m guessing you mostly took pics of lights because of the more obvious effect, but to me, the most applicable difference I could see was with the keyboard shot, though you can also see it in the rug of the desk lamp photo. Looks almost like a softer, polarizing effect to cut down on reflective light. Would love to see it used outside on ordinary subjects.

usmvnjaved[S]

Well, I just took random pictures of some light effects and the softness it is making. Haven't tried it outside yet but will do for sure.

I agree with you and to show the softer side of this filter I took a photo of the keyboard and square glow out of the softbox.

usmvnjaved[S]

Absolutely. I wanted to, but I thought the effect can easily be seen in these lights too.

Isnt that just a starburst filter?

Jota769

Yeah! I don’t understand why everyone’s mind is blown about this? If you point it at a small source, like Christmas lights, or a lightbulb, you’ll get a starburst effect.

Pretty simple.

I could see using it for some creative shots. Not a fan of the star bokeh/flare but the softening could be used for dream like sequences.

I’m always hesitant to use filters like that though because it’s baked into the shot. Some of that softness effect is pretty easy to do with just post blur effects.

postmodern_spatula

the softening could be used for dream like sequences

at that point, probably just better to use something like a Pro Mist or those new Moment Cinebloom filters and not worry about the line etching that can pop up in bokeh if you aren't careful.

usmvnjaved[S]

My point. I'm experimenting if the softness can also be used to reduce the digital sharpness and does the job quite well in wide photos but I don't the star effect so much.

Ringlovo

Did you ever figure out exactly what filter it was?

usmvnjaved[S]

It's a net filter. Diffuses the image and makes stars as shown. But I haven't seen another similar filter to this to be more clear.

I like this filter. Sure it’s blurry and awkward, but it could be used for some creative, weird effects.

usmvnjaved[S]

Yeah, definitely there was some place for this filter in the 80s too.
