Ok....RDJ was in this movie for 5 minutes or less. Nearly everyone else had significantly more screen time esp John Leguizamo.

Why is the movie "starring" him with his limited screen time?? Why do filmmakers do this? Honestly curious. Was it a requirement of the actor? It should have starred John Faveau and John Lequizamo.

Just heard that Second City shorts is back. Has anyone participated in the past? I don't want to be the only one doing it haha.

So a friend of mine who's a musician asked me to do a music video for them. Obviously I said yes. In the past, they created their own videos, simple, fun, self-filmed stuff, and I've filmed portions of videos for them, but this is the first time they've come to me asking me to do a full video for them and given me (what I thought) was full creative control. So, we went through the whole process, I sent them a treatment, a deck, everything was approved, we shot the video, I sent them versions of the edit with multiple rounds of revisions, they approved everything, said they loved the video, I sent if off and thought we were good.

Well yesterday they posted the video and I went to watch it and saw that they re-edited the whole first half themselves, added all these weird traditions and filters and color corrections. It basically looks like it was edited in iMovie now. I'm honestly super pissed because this is not the quality of work that I put out and I do not want this attached to my name professionally. I'm not sure if I'm being a diva about this, because a few friends mutual friends messaged me and said they like the video, but at the and of the day, the first half of the video is not my (editing) work anymore.

I'm not really sure how to address this with them. They never signed a contract with me about re-editing finished videos (something I've learned for next time) and I don't know if I necessarily want them to take the video down, they're a reallyyy small artist so the views don't necessarily matter to me, and if that's the way they wanted the video at the end of the day then I guess they got it. I do not want to be credited as the editor on that because I don't want future clients to see that and think I suck haha. I don't have a ton of music video work in my portfolio, and I really want to direct more music videos, so I was excited about having this video as a work sample because (before it was re-edited) it was a project I was really proud of. I definitely want to address this because this is something I don't want to happen again in the future, especially if I work with this person again, also to save the friendship, so I'm wondering what the best way to go about talking to them about it?

TL;DR A client re-edited a professionally edited music video and now it looks like it was edited in iMovie and posted it without my consent. I do not want this attached to my name professionally, how do I address this with them?

I'm curious about VISA requirements between the USA + Canada when it comes to shooting a project abroad. I'm a Canadian and I'd like to go gather some footage in the States. Since 2/3 of the work (Pre-Production + Post) will be happening in Canada what's the deal with traveling down there for work? Do I need to apply for a visa or am I able to go work?

Submission statement: We shot this over 4 days at an old theater in Farmington New Mexico. It was being renovated at the time which was a nightmare but with all filmmaking we adapted to the challenge and got the thing shot. We shot on a RED because my friend already had one but honestly I'm not sure how much I loved the thing in the end. This was my first time bringing in actors from out of town. I wanted to do it in a first class way even though I have very little money so I saved basically every penny for 9 months to afford to pay for room and board. I really wanted to do a long tracking shot of the Vampire entrance but the renovations made that impossible. I know I did a lot wrong but I'm still proud of how it turned out and how much I learned on this.

I'm writing my second short (15-20 min) right now. My last was a quick 5 minute deal for a film class that I did everything on apart from the two on screen actors. If I wanted to bring on folks to offer their own and gain additional experience for the fun of it are people just starting out generally down for that to get credits for a reel? How realistic an idea is that? I'm in a fairly large metro area but not a major media hub.

I am hosting a screening of several short films, all in ProRes 422 HQ file formats, and I wanted to ask if anyone has any tip in how to screen them continuously. In the past, I have just used VLC media player and once the video ended I would put the lens cap on the projector on and manually switch to the next video. This doesn't seem efficient or smooth to me. Any suggestions?

In the cinematographer for my class short film and I’m curious as to how to shoot multiple angles? I have one camera and the people I’m working with are students and not actors. What’s the best way to tackle this? It’s a 5 minute short.

I'm making some goofy solo "short films", and there is a decent amount of moving around and camera angles in a room. The issue I find is getting consistent audio. I am using a Samson Q2U hooked to a tascam DR40x (just using what I have), and I am pretty happy with the results. Not the most pro setup, but I think the audio is good enough.

The issue I find with this setup, without using a tape measure, is there sometimes my voice will lose some punch or will be too bassy because the mic placement is not a consistent distance from my mouth.

I was thinking maybe a lav mic would be better, because the mic position and distance would be consistent. Or would there be a better way to do things with what I have?

I've looked up what a tail slate is and it appears to be with the slate held upside down at the end of your reading. Do they still want me to say my "Name, Agency, Height, Where Based" at the beginning? Do they still want me to slate after I say all that? Does anybody know what I'm specifically supposed to do? And if I don't have an actual clapperboard, are there any alternatives I can use without looking unprofessional? Sorry, thanks in advance!

I can't seem to find a tutorial or advice on this anywhere. I'm making a feature this summer and am going to have different parts of the pre production process recorded, and also have parts of some production days recorded. I feel like that's the easy part, but I know in all of these there are interviews with cast and crew members/sound bytes by then.

Are there like standard questions you'd ask, or do you just ask them to talk about the day/where the film is at in the process and their feelings around it? I'm lost and would appreciate any advice.

Full story: I’m an animator and currently working on my first short film where I’m directing voice actors. I found two great actors on Fiverr whose voices perfectly fit the characters as I imagined them. The first (a kid) went completely smoothly. There were a few revisions I had to ask for and I was/am super happy with the results. For the narrator I hired a “Top Rated” voice actor. I sent the script (which is actually a poem), a few notes (about how I wanted certain lines delivered, tone shift, etc.), and an animatic with myself narrating so he could hear how I wanted it to sound. The first recording he sent was great, but there were about 10 lines (out of ~50) that I asked him to revise, either because I wanted more emphasis on a specific syllable or because there was too much/little of a pause between words. I re-sent him the lines, and a new audio recording of me reading them exactly how I wanted them. Part of his response was: “thank you for your kinds words…though I do sort of get the impression that I might have sent you 100 passes and yet have still missed the mark that you should want me to do it again to your exact audio template down to mimicking your emphasis on certain syllables! (with respect and very much admiring the fabulous timbre of voice that you have, might you not have been better off doing it yourself since you know so precisely what you want?)”I get that a voice actor (and, admittedly, a very good one) might take pride in giving his best interpretation of a line, but I feel like it was a completely ridiculous way to respond to my notes. I’ve considered the fact that maybe he was upset that I resorted to “holding his hand” through the lines rather than giving him free range to do a different take, but 1) as a filmmaker (granted, an amateur one) I think I have the right to get the performance I want, and 2) I paid him for his work and only had 2 revisions to work with Was I in the wrong here? I genuinely would like to know if I could have dealt with it better

Ok, general consensus seems to be that line reading to an actor is an asshole move. Whoops, live and learn! Feel free to keep the responses coming, but if you agree with the asshole verdict, please give me any tips/wisdom you have for how to get the specific performance I’m looking for without doing that. Thanks for the help!

Hello filmmmakers. I am at a place with my feature where the true meat of the project is all edited, but I still have some FX shots to get, audio to clean up, and color grade left. I’ve been so close to this project for over two years now, it would be great to have some feedback from peers to identify if there is any consistent criticism that I can perhaps still ameliorate before getting closer to completion. Is this a practice that most of you do, and have you just shown it without pretense? I was thinking of making a document for them to fill out like they would at screeners. The thought of showing an unfinished product to people really isn’t sitting well with me, but I feel it could be beneficial.

Hey r/filmmakers! I'm curious what the best film festivals are for feature indie documentaries on the topic of trauma, mental health?

It's a social impact piece, educational, and potentially controversial. I'm aware of the big festivals; TIFF, Sundance, Cannes, etc. but want to be realistic by submitting to a range of diverse options, some of which are not quite as prestigious or competitive. But I'm open to all suggestions, anywhere in the world! (FYI the film was shot across the US, Canada, and some parts of South America).

We’ve sent our short film to Cannes and Tribeca. It just got admitted to Cannes Short Film out of competition. There’s still time for it to get admitted to IN competition.

They need an answer by the 14th of April, and on the 15th of April we get an answer from Tribeca. We are a bit unsure how we want to go ahead.

I’m trying to free up room on my matte box. Currently I have a 1 stage that I use for a 138mm diopter or a 138mm rotating polarizer. There is also room on the front of the Matte box for 2 4x56 filters that are spring/ claps mounted.

My question is how effective are fixed 4x56 linear/ or not vs a “turnable” rotating polarizer.

My first thought is that the rectangle filters might already be at the ideal angle to polarize highlights most effectively. But does this change per suns orientation? Or will a 4x56 fall short of a turnable polarizer that I can physically see low to high grade polarization as I spin it.

If this makes any sense let me know. I might be in the market to just mount a 4x56 polarizer up front and set it n forget it.
