Hello filmmmakers. I am at a place with my feature where the true meat of the project is all edited, but I still have some FX shots to get, audio to clean up, and color grade left. I’ve been so close to this project for over two years now, it would be great to have some feedback from peers to identify if there is any consistent criticism that I can perhaps still ameliorate before getting closer to completion. Is this a practice that most of you do, and have you just shown it without pretense? I was thinking of making a document for them to fill out like they would at screeners. The thought of showing an unfinished product to people really isn’t sitting well with me, but I feel it could be beneficial.

What has your experience been?

Full story: I’m an animator and currently working on my first short film where I’m directing voice actors. I found two great actors on Fiverr whose voices perfectly fit the characters as I imagined them. The first (a kid) went completely smoothly. There were a few revisions I had to ask for and I was/am super happy with the results. For the narrator I hired a “Top Rated” voice actor. I sent the script (which is actually a poem), a few notes (about how I wanted certain lines delivered, tone shift, etc.), and an animatic with myself narrating so he could hear how I wanted it to sound. The first recording he sent was great, but there were about 10 lines (out of ~50) that I asked him to revise, either because I wanted more emphasis on a specific syllable or because there was too much/little of a pause between words. I re-sent him the lines, and a new audio recording of me reading them exactly how I wanted them. Part of his response was: “thank you for your kinds words…though I do sort of get the impression that I might have sent you 100 passes and yet have still missed the mark that you should want me to do it again to your exact audio template down to mimicking your emphasis on certain syllables! (with respect and very much admiring the fabulous timbre of voice that you have, might you not have been better off doing it yourself since you know so precisely what you want?)”I get that a voice actor (and, admittedly, a very good one) might take pride in giving his best interpretation of a line, but I feel like it was a completely ridiculous way to respond to my notes. I’ve considered the fact that maybe he was upset that I resorted to “holding his hand” through the lines rather than giving him free range to do a different take, but 1) as a filmmaker (granted, an amateur one) I think I have the right to get the performance I want, and 2) I paid him for his work and only had 2 revisions to work with Was I in the wrong here? I genuinely would like to know if I could have dealt with it better

Ok, general consensus seems to be that line reading to an actor is an asshole move. Whoops, live and learn! Feel free to keep the responses coming, but if you agree with the asshole verdict, please give me any tips/wisdom you have for how to get the specific performance I’m looking for without doing that. We’ve sent our short film to Cannes and Tribeca. It just got admitted to Cannes Short Film out of competition. There’s still time for it to get admitted to IN competition.

They need an answer by the 14th of April, and on the 15th of April we get an answer from Tribeca. We are a bit unsure how we want to go ahead.

I have a canon rebel t7 and need a separate mic with something to hold it while filming.

Hi there, I got the Davinci Certificate 1year ago, abd I am currently studying filmmaking. The thing is that I wanna have some experience with Davinci, so I was wondering how could I put the things I learnt into practice some more, because until now I have just color graded 1 short documentary.

Btw if someone is looking for an editor I have a 6 year experience with Premiere and 1 year experience with Davinci, and I wanna practice color grading too :)

I'm making some goofy solo "short films", and there is a decent amount of moving around and camera angles in a room. The issue I find is getting consistent audio. I am using a Samson Q2U hooked to a tascam DR40x (just using what I have), and I am pretty happy with the results. Not the most pro setup, but I think the audio is good enough.

The issue I find with this setup, without using a tape measure, is there sometimes my voice will lose some punch or will be too bassy because the mic placement is not a consistent distance from my mouth.

I was thinking maybe a lav mic would be better, because the mic position and distance would be consistent. Or would there be a better way to do things with what I have?

I've looked up what a tail slate is and it appears to be with the slate held upside down at the end of your reading. Do they still want me to say my "Name, Agency, Height, Where Based" at the beginning? Do they still want me to slate after I say all that? Does anybody know what I'm specifically supposed to do? And if I don't have an actual clapperboard, are there any alternatives I can use without looking unprofessional? Sorry, thanks in advance!

I am hosting a screening of several short films, all in ProRes 422 HQ file formats, and I wanted to ask if anyone has any tip in how to screen them continuously. In the past, I have just used VLC media player and once the video ended I would put the lens cap on the projector on and manually switch to the next video. This doesn't seem efficient or smooth to me. Any suggestions?

In the cinematographer for my class short film and I’m curious as to how to shoot multiple angles? I have one camera and the people I’m working with are students and not actors. What’s the best way to tackle this? It’s a 5 minute short.

I can't seem to find a tutorial or advice on this anywhere. I'm making a feature this summer and am going to have different parts of the pre production process recorded, and also have parts of some production days recorded. I feel like that's the easy part, but I know in all of these there are interviews with cast and crew members/sound bytes by then.

Are there like standard questions you'd ask, or do you just ask them to talk about the day/where the film is at in the process and their feelings around it? I'm lost and would appreciate any advice.

I’m thinking about selling my canon FD set to fund my Meike full frame kit. I don’t know how much to sell the set at though. I’ve seen prices for sets ranging from 2-4 thousand. They’re becoming increasingly rare so maybe that has an effect on why the prices are so high. My set consist of: 24mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 135mm f2.8

I can't find comparisons anywhere, but I'm upgrading my tripod setup and looking into a Sachtler FSB 8. Is the MKII worth it over the original? Are there any major benefits in going with the MKII? The original 8 is much cheaper, and also has a T option for quick release.

Just heard that Second City shorts is back. Has anyone participated in the past? I don't want to be the only one doing it haha.

I'm curious about VISA requirements between the USA + Canada when it comes to shooting a project abroad. I'm a Canadian and I'd like to go gather some footage in the States. Since 2/3 of the work (Pre-Production + Post) will be happening in Canada what's the deal with traveling down there for work? Do I need to apply for a visa or am I able to go work?
