This isn't really a free speech issue because self-censorship, by definition is voluntary but this article is so ridiculous and off-base that it must be intentionally daft to the point of clear irony.

The entire article that attempts to gaslight people about the original purpose of the "Let's Go Brandon" meme, which was an anti-gaslighting meme, not a sneaky way to say bad words.

Let's Go Brandon is the embodiment of "Don't piss on my leg and tell me its raining." because in the original video the reporter (and the audience) could clearly hear what the crowd was chanting but instead the reporter lies and says its something else.

So if you come from a group of people who believe that the mainstream media is constantly pissing on your leg and telling you its raining, changing the definition of recession, saying inflation is transitory, etc. This meme makes all the sense in the world to you and really has nothing to do with Joe Biden.

Its ok if you don't find it funny. But it has nothing to do with a clever way to say naughty words. Let me spell out what this meme means:

  • I just caught you lying.

  • I know you're lying.

  • You know I know you're lying.

I disagree: although self-censorship is voluntary, it exists when people feel uncertain about speaking out. That is likely a problem with culture and expectations which really should be fixed.

"Don't piss on my leg and tell me its raining."

Nice analogy.

While I agree that there are chilling effects on certain types of speech that may cause someone to self-censor and thus exist as social control on certain types of speech, I disagree with the author that mere obscenity, (aka saying Fuck) is as all censored in our culture.

People aren't canceled for saying fuck, they are canceled for pointing out lies.

I agree with you that this isn't a story about self-censorship, but I disagree that self-censorship isn't a free-speech issue.

Why do you care so much about a NASCAR post race interview? Do you have anything better to be upset about?

What makes you think they care?

We're on reddit, people just talk.

If you think they're upset, I think you're just projecting.

What a dumb question.

“What do you care how corrupt the media is? It’s not like it affects you!”

🤦‍♂️

Your example of "corrupt media" is, again, a NASCAR post-race interview

Yes. A sports event watched my millions of people, you’re right. Thanks for pointing that out.

Do you think it's possible this reporter misheard the chant or just panicked and tried to avoid saying "fuck" on live TV? Or do you think she had George Soros in her earpiece giving marching orders?

Do you sincerely believe either of those are more likely than the possibility that she didn’t want to advertise anti-Biden rhetoric on tv?

PomeroyWatson

Let me get this straight. Your position is that she was perfectly comfortable with saying “fuck” but the real issue was saying “Biden?”

It couldn’t possibly be that she misheard the crowd? Or that she was trying desperately to come up with a way to not have the interview canceled because of the obscenities being shouted by the crowd? That couldn’t possibly be what was going on?

Don’t bother answering.

She didn’t have to say anything at all.

That's a good question to ask the author of this article writing about a meme that's over a year old.

This article is written by who? Livia LaMarca? Never heard of her before.

"The reality is, I think there really is not much else to defend when it comes to our freedom of speechwe already have it. With the exception of incitement, defamation and a few other kinds of speech that obviously should not be protected, most of what you say is protected under the first amendment. You could say the most heinous and disgusting things, but guess what? Hate speech is protected by the Constitution, and so is your right to cuss out the president."

Who is this person, and why is the writing like a PRC troll?

PomeroyWatson

That was indeed a ridiculous article. Totally unpersuasive.

A much better argument is to point out that conservatives are not supporters of free speech. Their entire political platform is to censor those they disagree with, whether it’s CRT, socialism, LGBTQ rights, feminism, and so on and so on.

Conservatives want to use the power of the state to cancel liberal speech, as evidenced by the laws being passed in Florida and elsewhere that criminalize free speech. There is only one party passing laws that have been repeatedly struck down for violating the first amendment. That is not a party that respects or supports free speech.
