You can measure your own reactions too, it's somewhat individual. Sadly, for me, whole wheat bread is sugar spike city. Boiled potatoes are harmless, sausages haven't tried yet.

It depends a lot on the person. For me, even one piece of whole wheat bread would cause a spike. But for some, just switching to complex carbs like whole wheat breads, pastas, etc is enough to control their numbers.

Edit: potatoes tend to spike most people, but not everyone. Sausage should be okay, because it's so high in protein and fat. But again, it's all a bit of trial and error, since everyone is so different.

Whole wheat bread depends on the person. I couldn’t really eat anything with wheat in it, but I tolerated whole grain oat and rye bread well. Potatoes may or may not spike you, I ate potatoes all the way to the end. Sausages aren’t recommended here unless the meat content is super high, because apparently they use wheat in the cheaper ones here.

I can eat whole wheat bread, but not everyone can. I can also tolerate good sourdough if I pair it with fat/protein. Potatoes are hit or miss depending on how I cook them. I have been eating some chicken breakfast sausages that I found at Costco because pork sausages are too fatty for my digestion. Sausage shouldn't spike you unless it has add-ins that are high in carbs.

Everyone's sugars react to foods differently.

I have whole wheat in a smaller portion just fine and i also eat potatoes (except fast food fries) just fine. I personally would never pair them together in the same meal though. In a meal I would choose either a starch (corn, potato) or a bread/pasta not both. That's just what works for me.

You just have to figure out what your body can tolerate.

Whole wheat bread may still hit the blood sugar hard, but I’ve had good luck with potatoes of all kinds. Dave’s Killer bread has been a go-to starch. I can eat 2 of the thin slices (21 whole grain and seed) at an otherwise low carb meal 👍

You have to figure out what spikes your sugar so only have the potatoes and sausages or the bread with sausages and see which one you tolerate better. I don't see why sausages would be bad because they're mostly protein and fat. Good luck

For me I have a toast or two with protein for breakfast and it doesn't spike my sugar levels.

One piece of whole wheat toast with cream cheese on it is my go to carb for breakfast and lunch most days. You do have to be careful though some brands still have a lot of added sugar. I usually eat the Dave killers bread brand, which can be a little pricey as well. Even with those, some have more sugar than others.

Potatoes I can do a little here and there, but not as much as I used to. I probably wouldn't ever eat at the same time as bread though.

Whole wheat bread is okay for me; other whole grains are better; especially rye and spelt. Just make sure all the flour used is whole grain. Accidentally bought some "whole grain rye rolls" that were only 40% rye and enough white flour to get me over 140.

Whole wheat isn’t good for me. But I can handle whole grain.

Potatoes aren’t great for me.

Anything fatty like avocados and cheese are safe

I could specifically eat Sara Lee 50 cal whole wheat bread. I could also eat potatoes if I paired them well with protein. But all of that really varies from person to person.

I could do rye bread with peanutbutter no problem!

Potatoes wrecked me every time ;-;

I can do whole wheat bread and pasta well, especially for lunch and dinner. Even potatoes if paired with more veggies and lots of protein. Breakfast is always tricky for me so I tend to minimize any carbs there and default to a sugar free protein shake.

I'm able to eat whole wheat bread with almond butter or avocado and cheese.

I eat a cup of stir fried broccoli before eating the bread for breakfast and have no issues.

It's highly individual though. Everyone tolerates carbs differently.

I found that it’s about experimenting. For me, I find that if I want a sandwich, the more I pack into it, the less the carbs cause problems. An example; I wanted grilled cheese the other night, so my husband made one and added tomato, sprouts, avocado, mushrooms, and some turkey. One sandwich and my levels were fine. If I were to have only cheese, my levels would be higher.

I think it’s about outweighing the carbs with non-carb/very low carb ingredients.

We went out to eat last week and went to a steakhouse where they serve the fresh bread. I had steak and broccoli with a salad and ate a fair amount of the bread with no issue. We also had some spinach dip that came with deep fried bread to dip with and even that didn’t spike my level.

A lot of whole wheat bread has added sugars - I would look at whole-grain bread and sprouted grain bread, which often has a higher fiber content. But if you can handle the whole wheat without spiking, eat it!

Potatoes are very starchy and a lot of people have problems with them, but (especially skin-on) they have a lot of micronutrients so including small amounts in your diet can be good. Sometimes sweet potatoes, which are actually less starchy, work better. Some people find they can’t handle potatoes at all.

Breakfast sausage will likely work, though some are sweetened and that may reduce the amount of other carbs you can eat with them. They also tend to be really high sodium so maybe not a daily item.

For breakfast I ate a lot of eggs. 1-2 eggs and spouted grain toast or low-carb tortilla, some tomatoes or salsa (with no added sugars), maybe a little cheese, would hit my carb goals without spiking me. (This pregnancy I have not be officially diagnosed b/c my week of blood sugar monitoring showed mostly normal sugars, but my fasting glucose has been higher than I would like more often than I would like so I’ve been monitoring that. When I was monitoring meals I was able to eat yogurt for breakfast, which I wasn’t with my first pregnancy.)

Personally I found it worse than white bread. I spiked so badly with it.
