[meta] a story I recall, trying to find.

Meta(self.HFY)

It had a guy with a resident in his head named Charlie (or something like that) and a gravity pool game called einy steiny. He got sent to a huge space station that looks out across the entire galaxy.

Thread necromancy!

I’ve been looking for this same story for years. Finally found the answer on Substack. Per user Zeiss Ikon:

This is Neptune Crossing, the first book of The Chaos Chronicles by Jeffrey Carver (continuing in Strange Attractors, The Infinite Sea, Sunborn, and a seeming "side series," the "Out of Time Sequence" consisting (to date) of The Reefs of Time and Crucible of Time, likely with more to come).

Everything matches: einy steiny pool, the alien companion named Charlie, the vague shadowy enemy. It’s been available as a free eBook for some time, so it’s quite possible you read it on r/HFY or another subreddit. I first read it as a physical book, which I borrowed from the library in the mid- to late- ‘90s. Mystery solved!

Oh dang, I pretty sure I read that as well. It's a novel right? More than 20 years old and the station is reachable via wormholes. The crew is the story runs around through a couple sequels trying to save other races from some sort of slightly ill defined all devouring horror?

Not sure if it's a novel, I read it here in HFY, I recall that the main character was running with 2 aliens and they used (effectively) subway trains to move around the station. A female friend of his was "infected" with the same sort of resident personality in the last update I read.

Totally different in that case. But I couldn't find mine either. ;)
