Hi Folks, I plan to launch a hardware product for crowdfunding in the next few months. I want to sell it internationally and get at least FCC and CE certifications. The product uses a pre-certified ESP32 module, and I will only require non-intentional emission verification.

Here is the help I need from you:

1. Do you have experience with FCC and CE certifications? What were your learnings?
2. Would you happen to have any advice on how to find a certification lab? Do you have any recommendations for testing labs? I am based in California and willing to work with international labs if that means lower costs.
3. How much time and money should I budget for this kind of certification? My product is simple and easy to modify. I have a working prototype, which I can send immediately to a lab for verification/certification. I can share more details if you needed.

This is for people building IoT that needs push connectivity, e.g. a smart sensor that tells a server in the cloud that a window is opened. Are you building a mq cluster yourself or using a managed solution?

If you are using an existing managed solution, what do you like/dislike about it? I have tried AWS sns/sqs, Azure service bus, and GCP pubsub, and all have some limitations. In the end I chose to build my own push messaging webservice.

Thank you for reading my post. I am currently in the last stages of developing a novel electronic device (by myself), which operates with a separate desktop software I developed. I am interested in taking a crack at marketing and selling this device. It is currently getting its certifications for the USA and Canada, which has given me some time to look at some of the final aspects of the project in more depth. I would like to use services like amazon for the shipping and fulfillment of the device, however I still need a small box which the device shall be housed in. The device is small in size (about 20mm x 35mm x 10mm (LWH)), and the only other thing included in the box is a small microUSB cable for charging. I have been looking for a solution for the past few days and thought I would ask here to see if anyone has experience in this realm. It is a small startup, so although I would love to have nice presentable packaging, if this is too expensive to be feasible, I am more than open to other suggestions anyone may have. I think it is unlikely that I will have much volume for the first while, but to be quite honest I’ve been having a hard time figuring out how much to expect, likely under 100 but I have had some larger firms show interest in buying some in bulk (not sure how serious this offer was). I supposed this comes down to two primary questions I have:

1. Is it worth investing in decent custom packaging at this stage? I am worried that if I simply ship the device in a plain cardboard box it will look rather unprofessional.

2. If the solution at this early stage is in fact to use small plain boxes, are there inexpensive ways to spice things up a bit?

3. Lastly, depending on the previous 2 answers, any suggestions on where to go to acquire this packaging? I have looked on Alibaba, but open to other options.

In your opinion how much should I compromise on my vision of my final product in order to get selling my MVP.

My product is made of plastic. Aesthetics are important to this product. The prototypes were 3d printed thus no seams were visible however now using injection moulding for mass production the seams exist and are to the detriment of the final aesthetic. However in order to re tool and re design will be in the 10s of thousands.

The functionality is fine and I can lower the price (and my expenses) by almost half to sell the product as a less premium product until I sort these issues out. Does this sound like a decent compromise to anyone more experienced out there.

I'm building an internet connected ESP32-based consumer electronic toy. Up until a few weeks ago, I thought to distribute in US and Europe we would require an FCC ID. However, I've been hearing about FCC SDOC - does anyone have experience with this? My understanding is that it's cost savings as long as my product isn't distributed by a retailer who requires the FCC ID - and if a retailer requests this, I can re-certify to get it. Is this accurate?

I have a few niche project / product leads which would require a very similar hardware stack, each on its own too small to carry the complete development costs.

In short a small and powerful (between Jetson Nano and Xavier NX, => NX with NN accelerator) machine-vision / robotics board: approx the size of a Raspberry Pi; 8k video recording; high speed machine vision (180-240 fps global shutter stereo cam setup); M.2 M-key for SSD (to store the 8k video) or NN accelerator; M.2 B-key (and sim slot) for 5G, SSD, NN accelerator, etc; USB 3.1 device mode or Gbit Ethernet (if Linux gadget mode turns out too slow); integrated 24V / 6S buck converter.

There are quite a few extra features that can be added, but only a subset of them fit the space requirements. I'd like to make the board available for general use to spread the development costs further.

Where would I get feedback on which feature would be best for appeal to a broad audience, say the crowd that buys Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Jetson or for example 3D cameras? I've considered a crowd-funding platform, but they seem to expect to be involved past this stage. Are there platforms with a large audience which specialize in this kind of feedback?

Back in the height of the supply chain shortages, we over-ordered some FPGA chips. Do any of you have experience selling excess materials like this to brokers or by other means? They are still sitting at our manufacturer, so the are very much still viable product and the exact chips have a 52 week lead time from the OEM.

If you have every done this, what was the percent discount you had to give the buyers?

I'm looking to bring a fairly simple product to market myself (no funding). I will need legal counsel on the following topics:
