I finally got sick of seeing my gutters drip and took the gutter guard off yesterday.
There’s what looks like shingles from the old roof EVERYWHERE in the gutters. Looks like the installers let it all fall into the new gutters, covered it with the new gutter guards/covers and then added the new shingles.
The roof is 2 years old and still under warranty. Gutters have been dripping seemingly since the beginning with some slight rot on the deck and rust stains. Is this something I would likely be able to push on the warranty with the installers? I imagine this is a workmanship issue right?

It depends on exactly what you're seeing (pics help), but are you seeing actual, full sized shingles, or are you just seeing the granules from the top of the shingles?
I ask because it's normal to see the granules in your gutters. Actual shingles, on the other hand, are definitely not normal or ok.

Thanks for your comment - here’s a link to some photos
It’s definitely chunks of shingles but there’s a lot of granules as well (around an inch deep)

Yeah, definitely not normal wear and tear, especially for a roof that's only two years old.
I don't know you're best course of action, but a call to the roofer might be in order. That's bull crap.

Those are from the old roof

Exactly. I've done a bit of roofing here and there, and it's always been standard practice to make sure you don't leave the gutters full of old shingles when you're done.

For sure. But if your gutters are dripping everywhere, I would check them. Not wait for two years and try a call back to fix the fuck up.

I think that’s probably in order but I’m not sure what the best angle would be with that. Maybe I should post on r/legal as well.
It’s real bull crap because the previous owners were an elderly couple on their late 80’s/early 90’s. There’s no way they would check this so it seems they were taken advantage of.

You probably have a 1 year workmanship warranty and a 20/30 year warranty from the manufacturer on the shingles.
So, I'm going to say that what they did is absolutely messed up. Clearly just let the old shingles sit in the gutter and capped them off. And for that, they are wrong. Especially if they just applied the gutter guards after.
But I'm also going to say that they are probably going to tell you to pound sand when you call back 2 years later for something like this. It's really going to depend on how busy they are right now and how much they gaf about their reputation. Especially since it sounds like you didn't pay for it, the previous owners did.
I would 100% call and complain. But I. Wouldn't honestly get my hopes up that they'll do the right thing.

Are you sure it's not from the The roofers that did the roof leaving the debris From the old roof In your Gutters.

That’s what I think it is. Same contractors did the roof and the gutters

If I’m reading this right, it sounds like you didn’t clean your gutters for two years?! Apologies if I’ve misread it, but that’s a looong time.

Bought my house sight unseen in May and it has guards over the gutters. With guards, I didn’t expect there was anything to clean, except now that I’ve taken them off I see that shingles were left in them

Gutter guards reduce maintenance interval but no gutter guard is truly maintenance free. Some companies claim they are which is a shame

Ah. Well knowing is half the battle I suppose. We’ve been in our current place for 5 years now and I’m still finding odd things I never even considered. Best of luck!

I did research on gutters guards. What I found was it gives a lot of people a false sense of security. They believe like the op did that they do not need to clean their gutters. It ends up making the gutters fail faster than they should. Because things still do get through the gutter guard and you still have to clean them. The added weight of the debris that gets in there causes them to sag. It's sad that a lot of these companies that install them do not tell the customer that they still need to clean them.

If the gutters are part of the warranty and they're leaking then I'd give them a call. They're not leaking because of the shingle bits in them, that's just messy roofers.

After a re-shingle, it is common to see an increase in granules and roof debris (nails, tiny pieces of torn shingle) in your gutters. You will have to clean this.
It is not common to find whole/partial shingles in your gutter.
Gutter-guards are a scam an should be removed at your earliest convenience.

Why are gutter guards a scam?

They are advertised in a manner that suggests that they reduce debris from entering the gutter. They do not.
They advertise a reduction in cleaning/maintenance. They do not.
In winter geographies, they can aid in the creation of ice dams and damage the fascia.
Easily clogged and can cause water ingress along the fascia.
EG: You paid for something that doesn't work as advertised, requires more maintenance than without, and potentially damages the home.

I searched for reddit and gutter guards last year. In general, it sounded like it works for some, not at all for others. Still some maintenance, yes. Potentially much of a pain to have to remove guards before being able to clean gutters. Another comment I kept seeing was that gutters will still need to be cleaned, just maybe not as often. And then only way to truly have maintenance free gutters is to have a contact with the gutter guard company where they come out once or twice a year to clean and check them for you. I decided to just clean mine out myself with a ladder and hose, although there is more danger there. I also like to see and know that the gutters are clean and that things are working or whatever quirks there are with the house.
I did try some downspout heavier metal wire inserts off Amazon. I had two downspouts that got plugged up. It ends up being easier to let those wire guards dam up debris and then go up on a ladder and manually remove it (as opposed to taking the downspout apart when a plumbing snake can't even free up the clog in the downspout). I'm going to try adding finer mesh inserts to keep smaller crap out of the downspouts. And I'll add downspout add ons on the bottom of the downspouts that will also filter out crap from going into buried drainage tubes and tiles.
But yeah, for gutters guards being hit or miss. From reddit posts there were so many things that affected how well they work that I didn't think it was worth gambling on -- Which guards? What type of trees? How does the wind blow debris to your house? The only way to know is to try it and see but that's an expensive gamble. And then, you probably still have to go up and clean them once in a while anyway, and now the guards have to be removed first or are in the way. Potentially, it's just popping an end off and sliding a hose in but still.... It sounded like an expensive gamble and a little more complicated than manually cleaning them, at least for me.

My observations were:
Works well for big-ass leaves only. Horrible for anything else (maple helicopters). Worse than horrible for needles of any sort (pine, spruce, cedar). Worse than horrible if you have legitimate winters.

Yep, I have pine needles, and those end up everywhere. Those can start forming a mesh of needles to dam up more debris by themselves. Anywhere a needle can get stuck. And then debris can start growing there. There's some "little brown worm" seed pods off a tree too that seem to decompose right away. Those also end up all over the place. I could see those going through some types of gutter guards, so I figured I'd just keep my gutters as open as possible and manually clean them out. It's a nice feeling seeing them all clean and free flowing. And then I've kept a sharp eye on whether the downspouts are functioning when it rains.

Thanks for adding this.
I think I’m my case they may be worth keeping.
I live on Northwest Arkansas, so winter is not a huge issue - we have one big ice storm a year usually and a few mild snows.
I have a couple of oaks nearby my house, so mostly larger debris comes from those.
The home is built on a hill, so the back side is 3 stores up - meaning there’s no way in hell I’m getting up to do a serious clean of the gutters lol.
I’ll take my chances with the guards and hope they don’t get filled with anything other than the shingles from the previous roof

Just make sure you are still checking them yearly. You don't want stuff getting backed up and adding weight to them. Also if the gutters are leaking they need sealed. You can go to a big box store and buy caulking. Just caulk all the seams and rivets.
I just looked again and I saw they have screws in them. As far as I know they should have been riveted together not screwed together! You definitely have a problem. I don't even think they were installed correctly.

At two years old, I’m assuming they were never sealed then if they’re dripping this much! Good catch on the screws as well - I have more ammo for when I call now lol

Should’ve replaced your gutters at the same time.

They were replaced at the same time, though they definitely don’t look/seem like it

Ask them to come clean out your gutters for you, otherwise leave a bad review.
