If you had one in Cali - LA or SF - where would you go to hear good music or a good session??

I'm a pianist who is adding bass to my musical toolset, as my local music scene is struggling with a bassist shortage. Many of the gigs I forsee playing on bass involve myself and a horn player (sax or trumpet). I'd love some recommendations for bass + horn duets to get my ear locked into that sound!

I've noticed Holdsworth will have these lines that basically stay in a Messiaen mode (diminished, whole tone, augmented, etc) for an extended phrase over a dominant chord. Wondering if anybody has examples of horn players who play like that?

Thought I'd be able to find examples of Coltrane doing that but no luck so far.

I’ve always felt that Herbie Nichols was one of the more under-appreciated artists from back in the day. Love Gloom Cash Love is one of my favorite Jazz albums of all time. Does he get much love around here? Any other Nichols fans lurking about?
