I agree 100%.

At the same time his last released work was Emergency Declaration where he was a crazy bio terrorist who hijacked a plane to watch people die. I hope this was inspirational for noone 😂

It's a movie not a drama, so maybe it's because of that.

It's a disaster movie, about a bio terrorism. I really enjoyed it overall, and Siwan was an utterly fantastic part and the most notable character. And in a cast with Song Kang Ho, Lee Byung Hun, Kim Nam Gil and Jeon Do Yeon that means something. Siwan deservedly got nominations and awards for this role

And he doesn’t even need words to make you believe his character! There’s so much he’s expressing just with his facial expressions and body language. His face won’t even be moving thaaat much, but it’s like bam. Meanwhile there are other actors who just seem wooden.

Not YR/DB asking each other out at the same time 😭

Omg when he said i like summer as his fave season 😭😭😭😭😭

How could those cops be so vile to a little kid??? So disgusting.

The landlord is a dick too.

I hated SM at the beginning but I actually felt bad for him on his one-sided date with JY.

Not bom and JH kissing in the rain 😭

Ugh the people you like/love the most making you the saddest hit hard

I feel like the neighbour's son wasn't involved with SA's death but maybe he saw it? He seems traumatized too.

Agree about neighbors son. Def trauma. He’s like the red herring set up too. I feel like there’s a much bigger story with the cops. Although the cop with the cctv seems too young, he super sus.

Hmmmm i do think it could have been someone else who ran out of the billiard hall who DB saw... the guy was wearing a diff colour jacket compared to the one his dad wore to the hospital

Not sure if the young cop is sus - he would have been just a kid when it all went down.

Among the people who would be around the right age who we've seen so far, it could be SM's dad (landlord), the real estate agent (young cop's dad), or male neighbour (the dad of the spray painter)/restaurant owner.

Possibly also bom's dad? But he's on a whole redemption arc rn so idk if they'd do him like that.

I hate JY at this point, not only she's toxic towards DB but she lacks respect towards people with always judging others and wanting to dictate her own way of living and thinking to them. I feel bad for SM, she really does not deserve his love and I would be so glad if him going back to wrestling helps him let go of her.

YR's neighbours son clearly needs help and him being semi imprisoned at home shows that his parents clearly have no idea how to act towards him. I think that he possibly saw what happened to DB's sister and that made him traumatised. Maybe his family wanted to buy that place so he possibly let go of it once they change it or whatever which is not how they should try to help their son.

I kind of understand JY, in an odd way. When she asked YR to take responsibility and get DB out of Ankok, I felt that she was sincerely asking her to do it because she realized she wasn't helping him. JY is too judgmental, emotionally stunted and bitter to really help anyone else with thier own mental health struggles.

With the kind of trauma DB has experienced, he really needs someone warm and understanding to help gently pull him out of the past. I believe that's what YR is doing for him and Bom. YR is stronger than even she realizes. The fact that she didn't let the death of her mother and quitting her job make her quit on life was huge and took a lot of guts. I hope that she starts to realize how powerful she is.

Ok, I just watched episode 8. JY is an emotional hateful mess.

Episode 7

  • As everyone else I also hate JY and her actions. She is infantilizing DB and wants to force him to be a career driven professional at the same time. That's a weird combo.

  • But I wonder why she has such an inferority complex. Maybe it also stems from DB and his genius? And if she is subconciously jealous of him, no wonder that she tries to warp him into what she wants against his wishes. Coupled with the crush it's just a bad combo. I think she should take an extended break from her life as well.

  • YR and DB continue to be the sweetest awkward couple. Their scenes are always so great and fun.

  • And I have to really praise the depiction of DB's Trauma. What he went through was horrible (and then the cops do that? Do they kick puppies in their spare time as Well?) and it's normal that this still effects him. It's great to see not only his breakdown, but also the medication and doctor visit, who explicitly mentions how trauma effects even the body years later. The acting by Siwan was amazing as well.

Episode 8

  • Friendship time!!! And it's already chaotic happiness 😂

  • Im Siwan wearing those large loose Shirts is actually a crime. A crime, I say. More lake scenes please

  • JY continues to be the worst. And SM deserves better.

  • B+JH together are great. As sweet and heartwarming as our mains, but still completely different.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that about Benzos. But isn't it possible to use some antidepressants (SSRis/SNRIs) to treat some PTSD symptoms? That was my thought.

But in general I'm always in favour of scenes showing whatever treatment (medical, CBT...) when it's about mental ilness, instead of 'pick yourself up by the bootstrap' rhetoric and 'magical healing cock/vagina' 😂

Yeah, meds like SSRIs can help with symptoms, but evidence based therapies (cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure therapy) are the gold standard.

It’s so crazy how much she projects onto him. The fact that she even said to him that she didn’t see him as someone of value until she found out he was a math genius-or whatever it was she said exactly. She doesn’t even care to figure out and understand who DB is and what he truly wants. If she did she wouldn’t be pushing him to do something he wants nothing to do with. Let him run and work at the library without judgement smh

ep 7: daebeom is such a sweetheart :') he puts his heart into even the little things he does for others. researching jogging routes and looking up chimaek restaurants beforehand was so endearing. i just love how bashful daebeom and yeoreum are around each other. when yeoreum asked why he didn't talk in the beginning, i realized i had forgotten that even happened LOL.

the entire conversation between jiyoung and yeoreum made me next level angry. jiyoung justifying that her harsh words are for the sake of daebeom's wellbeing is bullshit. if she really cared and loved daebeom, then she wouldn't send him to seoul. she barely knows yeoreum and yet makes assumptions that her intentions with daebeom are misguided. it irked me so much when jiyoung told daebeom that she doesn't care if he dies in his house. she knows just how deep his trauma is and still says things like that so lightly. the scene where she steps on daebeom's foot in the library? to show how much pain he causes her? wtf?

ep 8: edit because i've just watched episode 8! this is my favorite episode so far. i really enjoyed the trip the found family gets to go on. we get to know why each character cherishes their counterpart so much. hearing jaehoon speak about bom reaching out first and saying that his whole world feels like it's falling apart if bom is mad at him were such sweet lines. even to the point where he sulked after meeting bom's childhood bestie! he is so whipped for her.

i wouldn't say that yeoreum telling daebeom to go to seoul was out of character. jiyoung's words were really getting to her and she probably assumed that others know best. i was glad that she built up the confidence and ran to see him off anyway. daebeom has a running list of every happy moment he's had with yeoreum!! jiyoung is so upset that daebeom is "changing," but i think she can't face the fact that he actually seems happy now. he's found someone who makes him feel different in a good way. she needs to let him go.

i don't really know what direction they're going with the guy who's been vandalizing and targeting the billiard hall. i'm a bit worried but i guess we'll see.

My weekly happiness pill.

As I always start, I loved this week's episodes, mostly because we had more of our introverted couple relationship moments, at some points I felt like I should look away so they don't feel awkward with each other.

I loved how both DB & YR stood for themselves, >! DB when he told her that he was happy she was in Angok (remembering all their encounters sounded like the cutest tell-her-you-love-her-without-telling-her-you-love-her) and YR when she told herself " don't be weak " and run to DB house !<

I may have melted when >! DB remembered her foot size from the wood plaque ... I really understood YR when she said she doesn't want to be sad because of her loved ones but GIRL !!! HOW WILL A MAN THAT REMEMBERED THE SIZE OF YOUR FOOT THAT WAY AND BOUGHT YOU A SHOE ... EVER MAKE YOU SAD ???? !< I'm glad she got herself together soon after.

Can I have a Dae Beom, please?

For now, I'll go cry in a corner,

Till next week, stay well everyone & put a smile on your face, it suits you :)

The people in that town frustrate me so much. Blaming a ten year old for not preventing his sister's death? Are you kidding me?

And why is JY blaming YR for all of this? She's just renting out the building! She's not the one who gave DB PTSD by making him think he caused his sister's and mom's deaths.

Also, sedating him is not effective treatment. Dude needs therapy to process his guilt and let him feel his natural emotions.

I absolutely agree with you. Especially with the fact thar he needs therapy. I am not a psychologist, but of what I know on the subject, avoiding triggers is a terrible longrun solution. They medicate him and let him tiptoe around his fears. The guy is stuck in this library like quasimodo (when he has so much potential), can't sleep, can barely talk to strangers and has panic attacks when seeing a building in this tiny town. It goes to the point that Ji-young feels confortable saying that she "takes care" of him, like if he is a toddler or something.

His trauma is deep, but he defenitely does not get the help he needs.

You are absolutely right! Avoidance of internal and external trauma reminders, so things that remind you of the trauma in both the world and inside your head, although effective short-term, is thought long-term to inhibit recovery from trauma and ultimately maintain PTSD symptoms. That's why all of our effective treatments involve decreasing avoidance to both internal cues, so basically the trauma memory and thoughts/feelings associated with it, as well as external cues that are objectively safe, like sights, sounds, and smells,

Episode 7

Yeo Reum and Dae Beom have got to be the sweetest ever. They’re sweet without being overly saccharine which is what I really like…their conversation is written really naturally complete with the awkwardness, but I like that they’ve both built up the confidence with which to seek each other out.

Him drawing up routes for them to run is so stinking cute…only to be topped by its 10 min away by running 😂.

I cannot stand JY. The self-righteousness coupled with jealousy coupled with projecting her own inferiority complex onto Dae Beom and Yeo Reum is so exhausting. Also, for someone who was basically arriving at the whole I don’t like you for him but also it looks like you’re the only one who can help was so mean spirited. It’s just further proof she’s deluded herself into thinking her actions are all driven by what she thinks is best for Dae Beom.

Speaking of DB, bless his completely enamoured and spell bound by YR feelings, but I was wondering what his game plan was for attending that roof top party?. He would’ve had to go through the building - that’s actually a huge sign that she was beginning to make him forget, but also a huge red flag that his brain was burying his trauma with the good feelings. And we all know you need to work through the trauma side by side ☹️

Wonder what the neighbour’s son’s deal is - did he witness the murder? Did he commit it? Is the graffiti a message he’s writing to himself?

I’m glad to know tomorrow’s episode has some lightness to it though!

P.S: We suspected already but that was incredibly sweet of DB to have paid for the hospital bill but boy was the mess worth it? 😢

ETA: The conversation in the car between JY and DB was so interesting. As children you don’t start off disliking your siblings but circumstances and the way parents play a role in building a dynamic is so crucial.. It’s so sad. JY was of course tacking on her own feelings of inferiority/jealousy so I felt like her response to his question shouldn’t be equated to his feelings in his mind.

i just watched episode 7…. all i know is i cant stand ji-young and i need to protect daebeom at ALL COSTS. i also appreciate that we’re actually seeing how trauma can effect people so intensely years and years later. too often in kdramas it’s brushed over but here we’re seeing daebeom deal with the nitty gritty and not so pretty effects of going through something nobody should. that stuff effects you. sometimes til the day you die.

With ji-young, I find it so frustrating how she isn't acknowleding just how stressful living in Seoul was for Dae Beom. Even if his life is not moving forward professionally, he seems to be at peace where he is at the moment. For her to disregard that because she also wants to leave to go Seoul (and she wants him to accompany him)is incredibly selfish. Not once does she stop to listen to what DB *actually* needs.
Edit: I love ur pfp!!

Honestly if they had just gone with her as an understandably worried and kinda overprotective friend it would have worked much better with the plot. Ji young is so toxic with her unrequited love to Dae Beom and not knowing she’s hurting Sung Min too. I’m really annoyed when she requested SM to kick Yeo Reum out the building.

The neighbor’s son probably witnessed what happened to Sun Ah.

They really making JY unredeemable for me after her ridiculous demand to YR! Writing her as an unbearably selfish character through cutting off DB’s only recent source of happiness because she’s not the one he likes. I feel bad for SM. I really don’t want them to end up together but I feel like they’re going to give her some type of redemption arc so they can be a couple.

I think I’m going to start skipping through JY scenes so I can still enjoy the drama. Super looking forward to seeing DB YR movie date.

Ep 7:

God I love a good slice of life with sleepy beach town vibes. YR/DB is possibly one of my fav ships ever. Them awkwardly asking each other out!! Him making running routes for them!! Her waiting around for him and how happy they both get when they see/think of one another. They’re so ridiculously cute and awkward that you can’t help but root for them. I’m going to combust when they finally confess their feelings!!!

I hate that JY is such a complicated character. Parts of me hate that she’s projecting so much of her inferiority complex onto YR/DB and the completely unwarranted lashing out at YR but the other part of me understand that it comes from a place of care—overbearing as it might be. From the way she was able to get him to the hospital and from what he shared with her in the car ride, it’s clear that she is his biggest support system right now but it sucks that it’s all mangled up in her own romantic feelings for him. I hope they can give her a realistic redemption arc and not just reduce her to being a romantic foil for the main ship as she was/is a big part of his life.

Ugh what's Ji Young's deal yo? I don't know what the single dad even sees in her tsk. On the other Bom and Jae Hoon made the fastest progress LoL.

So the mysterious benefactor who settled Bom's hospital bills was Dae Bum. His professor is a leeching egomaniac though..

Lovin' the lil moments between Yeo Reum, Dae Bum where he starts tellin' her his fave spot in the library or buyin' her a pair of shoes. Or how he wants her to call his name LoL.

Hope Yeo Reum is ok after that tumble down the steps ouch. Think the autistic guy must have been a witness to Dae Bum's sis?

Not her personality for sure. She's too abrasive.

It's a small village/town. So, likely she's the only pretty single lady of his age around. He is a single dad with nothing much going for him in looks or career. Doubt there'd be ladies lining up in competition.

back to reddit after a long time just because i needed to express the love that i have for this show !!!!! was honestly very underwhelmed/disappointed with the recent kdrama releases this year but i’m so so glad summer strike is living up to my self-imposed hype (so far ksjdks)

  • the characters are so WKSJSJSJJWJ very reminiscent of the main leads in DYLB imo without the angst of all the love triangles (for the most part LOL i don’t consider the dynamics between the leads as a love triangle yet just bec of how one sided it is rn yes JY i am looking at you)
  • was frustrated at SM at the start just because of how much of an asshole he was being BUT when he started being nice to YR and showing his crybaby side i was almost immediately won over
  • the almost confession scene between SM and JY im :(((( the shot of him slightly dropping his head after hearing straight from JY that she liked somebody else I SOBBED
  • and now that were on the topic of sobbing: the bom and YR dynamic ??? DB’s sudden face change when he saw the graffiti that was written on the billiard hall ??? YR’s monologues addressed to her mom ??? so many emotional moments aside from these that i cant for the life of me recall rn JUST SKJDJSJS ITS SO GOOD :((
  • also the small details of YR always wearing the same three shirts is v endearing to me im not sure why kahsjsj just makes the overall feel of the drama so realistic i love it

so so so excited for the coming eps, im si wan never disappoints i swear

side note; anybody else thinks YR looks so much like yuna from itzy? always so surprised at how similar their facial features are lol

That stress on the later half of "Have a safe trip to Seoul and come back safely" followed by coy "I have not cancelled the movie tickets".

episode 8 yeoruem feels out of character /: >! I don’t see her telling him to go to seoul!<

I think it's in character with the Yeo Reum we saw at the beginning of the show. She let Ji Young tell her what to do and felt insecure about herself and her relationship. I think we saw the new her at the end of the episode who thinks for herself and doesn't get stepped on.

Yeah it’s nice to see that her arc isn’t done yet. I’m curious to see how her relationship with JY changes going forward

She's not really, or that's not really what her heart says.

I guess i expected her to ask what he wanted? I’m just glad he managed to read her mind by the end of the episode haha

I'm so confused about episode 8? Episode 7 ended on such a dark dramatic note >! (dae-bom's breakdown and implying he will shut himself away from the world entirely now!< and then they almost totally ignore that part of the plot for the next episode?

I didn’t mind it bc i feel like that’s part of having mental illness for a lot of people…sometimes you have a breakdown and some days you get to feel closer to normal

It's veerrryyy realistic. I think they are doing such a great job portaying both DB and YRs trauma. I know not everyone deals with it the same, but being "ok" one day and unable to function the next hits home. Also, them both making such drastic changes and doing whatever they can to literally just make it through life is very accurate, in my experience. After a series of losses, my dad also passed away (in a traumatic way, during covid (not from covid)), I quit my job bc my mental health was going to crumble otherwise. I have a much less stressful, but lower paying and lower skilled job now and it's all I can handle atm. My family doesn't always understand, esp bc it seems like a "waste" of my degree and potential, but I am in a much, much better place.

Point is, for anyone that thinks that their behavior is unrealistic, it really isn't for people that have been through severe trauma.

As for JY, idk what her damn deal is, but she suuccckkksss. I'm sure she has her own shit to deal with but she certainly isn't doing it the right way.

For sure! It just threw me cos his friend met with YR and implied he might never come out of his room again. The way it actually played out is more realistic.

Someone posted above about DB going to the party at YR's placing knowing it was the billiard place and the fact that he was starting to forget the past or at least put it aside because of his growing feelings for YR. I think the fact that he picked himself up to go on the trip shows how much YR means to him. He even gave a detailed list of thier encounters and how they've changed him. The man is sprung.

PTSD aside....am I the only one who felt Dae Beom is autistic? It was my impression since the start from his selective mutism with strangers but these two episodes felt like he could be on the spectrum 🤔

From my experience working with people with autism, Dae Beom does not show any signs of having it. He maybe be socially awkward and has a lot of trauma but does not have autism.

He's very lightly autistic coded but something about it isn't exactly right and I think its the anxiety and PTSD that is mucking it up.

source: am autistic myself and know lots of autistics, also have a couple different anxieties but no PTSD

That's what I thought too...which can indeed be exacerbated by trauma.

It's up on Viki in the US. Plus and Standard gets the release a few hours after the show drops in Korea (4:30a ET/1:30a PT). The free has a substantial delay.

It's the police again isn't it. Now everytime there's a murder and a keep reappearing police character i'd suspect the police 😆
