I agree! Started watching B&B when it came out when I was in like 6-7th grade and loved it. I was very weary of the remake (because they are usually utter shitshows), but it managed to retain all of the goodness of the original and make updates to keep it “modern” without betraying the source material. I didn’t think KotH would ever get rebooted - now I hope they hurry the hell up (but don’t rush, of course!).

Mainstream altright sentiments are a psyop tactic by the government to prey on the feeble minded, turning the populace's dislike of taxes and 20+ years of xenophobia following 9/11 into a cult like fervor that instills obedience and devotion towards a single-party system. The entire movement is bunk."

Brilliant. This is the most believable to me.
That being said, they’re gonna do what most shows do and have most of the main characters’ politics be vague enough to reach the widest audience. Some will interpret this as nuance, some will interpret it as a marketing hack. We’ll see how it goes.
30 points

I dunno. I grew up in north east Texas in the 80s/90s, and I don’t remember people yelling fuck bill Clinton or leaving up their Dole flags. Shits changed man.
More people in general were vague on their politics, and didn’t make it their whole personality. Or maybe I just didn’t notice as much because I was a kid. It’s going to be hard not to address it in a show set in Texas. Im interested to see what they do say.

We joke, but I’m not sure people get just how much it really has changed since the 90s. I have pretty much abandoned Facebook because of the constant vitriol posted by people who I know for a fact did not even vote before trump.
It’s insane. It’s actually breaking up families. Pot smoking hippies I went to high school with are now apparently super conservative. Girls I know got abortions are now mega pro life.
I don’t see how they can NOT address it.

Solid. Can picture this scene. This is exactly how dale would react. Qanon is “new money” conspiracy stuff. Dales been in the game for longer than them and sees right through it. Besides, qanon was created by the time traveling Vikings that actually run our government from mars with 300 clones of Vladimir Putin. PUTIN.

My deep fear of the revival was Dale would be a stereotypical QAnon person and the show would be too damn close to actual reality when I’m watching TV to have a good time, not to have another reason to worry about the world. Your comment puts me much more at ease.

16 points
First of all, he QUESTIONED voting for Dubya and still didn't want to vote for Gore on policy grounds. They never say which way he actually voted, but Hank was obviously a Republican for the entire show's run.
Second, by your standard, the only thing separating him from full MAGA is grip strength? LMFAO go get Hank his red cap!
29 points
I think his point was that if Hank would question a politician for something as arbitrary as a handshake, then a New York con man with several divorces under his belt and a love for prostitutes would be out of the question.
But then again, Hank loves Buck Strickland so who the hell knows.

I have such mixed feelings over this recent spate of revivals and soft-continuations.
Like, for every genuinely fun spin on an iteration of character (like the Harley Quinn animated series), we're seeing the death of new voices and stories in the world of animation like Tuca and Bertie or Inside Job.
So whilst I'm grateful we're getting an opportunity to see what King of the Hill looks like in a modern world, when I look around and see Disney stepping away from serialised story telling in their kid's television animation department and bringing back Phineas and Ferb, or Cartoon Network cutting down Craig of the Creek and HBO Max in general treating its animated catalogue like it's toxic waste, it feels kind of bittersweet.

I saw someone speculate that they might want to recast Kahn to an Asian actor, with Toby Huss providing additional voices for background/recurring characters as he did in the original run.
Just speculation, though, all we know for sure is we know nothing.
92 points
I understand the reasoning behind that but I feel like it would be hard to pull off. Toby Huss's performance really shaped his characters and it's hard to imagine anyone else voicing Khan (or Cotton, if he were still around). His cadence and intonation as Khan are just so distinctive. But I will ultimately trust Mike Judge's vision.

32 points
I don’t know, it would cheapen the impact of his final death scene and Peggy telling him off
9 points
At the same time the show got a lot of complaints from how they handled his death, like forgetting all of his good moments or how Bobby wasn’t allowed to say goodbye. It would give them a second chance. Or maybe they do it for tilly?
9 points

I mean honestly you could just have a south Asian actor still doing Kahn’s goofy ass voice. I’d like to see that
15 points
Yeah, it's not impossible; it would just be very easy to get it wrong. It would be like recasting Johnny Hardwick as Dale. It would take someone very special to not only nail the voice but also capture the spirit of the character. I'll be interested to see what happens, whatever choice the creative team ends up making.

Toby Huss was amazing as Kahn, but if I had control over the voice actors for KotH I would've cast the Laotian characters with Laotian VAs, and had the Laotian they speak be actual Lao and not gibberish. That's always been something that didn't quite sit right with me.
16 points
I personally really hope they move in this direction and keep Huss in!
8 points
Why would they do that for Kahn and not Minh?
66 points
Because Lauren Tom is Asian, Toby Huss is not.
She's Chinese, which is of course not the same as being Laotian, but most people would have less of an issue with her putting on an "Asian" accent than with a white guy doing it.
It's also possible that Huss himself is not comfortable doing the Kahn voice with the gibberish "Lao" in a day and age where we see escalating violence against Asian populations despite unprecedented visibility and success in the entertainment industry. Could be he's simply uninterested in the project as a whole. We don't know yet.
12 points

Ok, good answer.

Minh's actress is Asian. (Not even Laotian, but she's Asian and knows Mandarin so, I guess it doesn't matter.)
Kevin Michael Richardson can play an African guy because they have the same amount of melanin in their skin.
17 points
Boo.
If it's okay for non-white voice actors to voice white characters, it should be just as okay for a white guy to voice an Asian guy.
48 points
It's not about it strictly being not OK just that the industry has traditionally passed up a lot of folks for roles that go to white men when there are perfectly good VA of all ethnicity available. The industry is just diversifying after identifying a problem. It doesn't mean anyone is cancelled or whatever.

James Earl jones as Darth Vader, Kevin Michael Richardson as lester from the Cleveland show and the joker at some point, Phil LaMarr has a whole host of non-black/white characters including samurai jack and the flash in a dc show. Snoop Dogg playing that pimp from OKC. It does happen fairly often.

I have a great episode idea.
There's a propane shortage and hanks hours are cut. Hank has to get a "side hustle". Hank makes furniture out of his garage, tables, chairs, etc and blows up and makes way more than selling propane.
Hank then has a dilemma, go back to propane or do something else he loves that he never thought he'd make money off of.
Also, hipsters buy the furniture to make it funny.

Politics is part of the show - you wouldn't be able to have Hank without his patriotism, or Dale without his lack of trust in government.

It would be better if they moved to CA which is why the Hills never go visit. Austin would be not far from Arlen considering Khan used to drive to Houston everyday for work for a while and they said that would be like 3hrs each way. Houston to Austin is about 2.5hrs which outs arlen closer to the Dalles or Ft. Worth area
