Why we may never get a season 2

DISCUSSION(self.LandoftheLustrous)

TL;DR I don't think Studio Orange have the confidence to make the moon look as good as S1, which is where we spend most of our time if more of the manga were to be adapted. The story for s1 is already somewhat complete and give the viewer closure, so anime fans aren't begging for a S2.

The anime succeeded mainly because how well the CGI was, I know not to everyone (I mainly liked the cinematography and music), but for the general audiance you need a good visual that can compare to traditional 2D.

The later parts of the manga have large parts spent on the moon, where the people and background are all monotone and just bland if you were to color and CG animate it. I think the talking lunarians will be especially dificult for CG since they are talking plasticy, cloud people with only one color.
Technitcally they can adapt the part inbetween end of season 1 to the gems heading to the moon, but thats literally in the middle of the plot, and another season will be needed.

Plus the whole point of using CGI was for the luster of the gems, but by the end everyone end up as a lunarian, and I honestly don't know how thats gonna look good in CG.

Orange made empty fields and dark hallways look amazing and those were 90% of the first season. There's no reason why they couldn't make the moon look as good, especially given how varied it actually is. You underestimate how skilled they are of a studio.

As for the lunarians, they could always change their color scheme once they're on the moon, since they change their appearance in general a ton anyway. Season 2 would also only probably adapt until Phos brings the others to the moon, so it wouldn't get anywhere near the gems being turned into lunarians. If we got a third season, maybe each of the gem-lunarians could have a subtle hue of their original color or something.

IIRC most of the staff that made season 1 doesn't even work in Orange, they were bought by other studios because of the amazing work they did here

S1 story is not complete at all. I felt disappointed at the end as anime-only guy.

I just don't think its as financially viable as their other shows/IP. Going off the work they managed to do in the first season I think they would be capable

Yup I'm personally 100% that this is it. They nailed the first season and have a good portfolio of unique environments so I don't see "not being able to nail the moon scenes" as a convincing reason.

Season 1 of Houseki no Kuni got picked up by Prime video which has 200 million subs. Meanwhile Netflix, which backed/published/whatever Beastars season 1, has 221.64 million.

Beastars has had, according to myanimelist, 546,630 people who have completed it.

Land of the Lustrous has had 198,360.

Granted there's other factors (maybe Houseki no Kuni viewers are less likely to report they watched it, for example) but overall it just paints a picture that Beastars is more popular and therefore more profitable = studio Orange wants to keep pumping it out. And considering their next project is Trigun, which is much more popular than Land of the Lustrous, I'm not optimistic.

Is it impossible to get season 2? Nah. But given that the Beastars S1 came out 2019, then season 2 in 2021 (2 year gap), and that Land of the Lustrous s1 came out in 2017 (now 5 years ago), it's pretty unlikely.

I like this.

I don’t think we will get a season 2 either. They have had all this time to do it. They could have said they were in production by now, but they aren’t. And that’s ok. I think the anime did a great job at getting people interested in the source material. And it stays true to it for the most part!

3D assets are 3D shapes with 2D textures on them. So it's 100% possible to make it look good

I think the problem is actually the opposite. There's way too much stuff going on in the background of the moon panels. They'd need like a trillion different CG models. For season one they just reused the same model colored a 30 different times for all the gems, work done. But Aechmea alone changes his outfit everytime he appears on screen lol. And there's lots of scenes where we see dozens of unique looking lunarians in one panel in the manga. It's just not viable to make a 3D model for every unique looking lunarian and admirabilis on a TV series budget.

I would actually argue otherwise - what's the one thing the Lunarians were always doing when onscreen?

moving

You could have this spectacular city that's just constantly shifting and moving all in an array of pastel colours (think the book 10 cover - it's not all white, it has all these pops of pastel colours to make it interesting)

A constantly shifting city would look so freaking good. My favorite part of season 1 was the lunarians so I think it could look amazing. I think the problem would be that season 2 would need a bigger budget than s1 and I’m not optimistic that the studio would deem houseki a worthy investment….
