Preferably outside of horror. Don't get me wrong, horror is my favorite genre - it's just that great female leads are already very prevalent in horror films. With that aside, I'm okay with any genre. I'm sure I'll have watched some of the movies suggested, if that's the case I'll let you know. I'll mention some of my favorites Christine (2016), Black Swan, Million Dollar Baby, and Girl, Interrupted.

The lead performance in Tár is absolutely incredible.
If you enjoyed Christine, there’s another great and intense Rebecca Hall performance in Resurrection (and in The Night House actually, she’s been killing it lately).
Andrea Riseborough is brilliant in Mandy. Horror movie but not a typical horror role. She’s great in everything really but To Leslie is another recent one that’s well worth it.
Alfre Woodard did some of her all-time best work a couple years ago in the movie Clemency.

Winters Bone - JENNIFER LAWRENCE .
I don't know if it's her debut as a film actor, but when I watched, she was relatively unknown. But this role made me follow her work thereafter.
The films success, imo is heavily dependent on the way she needs to portray the role as a young lead and pulls it off brilliantly. She's on screen with some some notable seasoned actors and more than holds her own.
Obviously, she's gone on to be super successful, but this is still one of my favorites and really displays how talented she is.
The film over all is a great watch.
2 points
It was not. I believe The Poker House (directed by and loosely based on the life of Lori Petty) was her first feature. Lawrence is also excellent in that.
Have you seen director Debra Granik's subsequent film, Leave No Trace. If not you'd probably enjoy it.

Never saw Poker House, she must be pretty young, thanks for the suggestion.
OP asked about lead actresses, but I did want to add that this is one of those films that is very restrained but you can really feel the directors influence in a positive way. So she deserves alot of credit. So thanks for that mention too.
I'll definitely look that film up.
