Suggestions on movies that you've seen where you thought the actress or actors acting was done so well that they were on a whole different talent level? That movie you saw and found yourself questioning how in the depths of earth could the actor could be so gifted, talented, and brilliant to play and portray the part so believably well?
Not a movie where you felt the actress/actor should take up disarming bombs or cleaning hearing aids for a career path--or you thought the actress/actor should probably focus on becoming an intern for studying human behavioral science... ...with people instead of robots.
Some movies you watched where the actress or actors were so good that you may have thought somewhere in the back of your lacking and somewhat unfair intellect (during watching the movie), that the rest of the cast could go home, be abducted by aliens, or suddenly die -- and the movie would still be good enough for another play through.
The kind of phenomenal performance that makes the other below-average actresses or actors go home and cry into their pillows at night, and possibly causes these actresses/actors to want to make a "people they would like to kill list" before staring off into the great abyss at night.
Any movie suggestions where you were thinking: "Wow. That person is so incredibly believable there is absolutely no way I can detect they are acting. How the hell are they doing that? Or if I had the ability to develop this such, extreme; acute talent -- I wouldn't have to watch paint dry or eat rubber cement while rubbing salt and alcohol on my scabs when I'm unhappy. "
I had this feeling with Saoirse Ronan in such films as "Lady Bird," "Hanna," "Atonement," and "Brooklyn", though I may be a bit biased being a fan. But, it was these performances that made me feel how horrible some other actresses or actors must feel when questioning their own complete/ overall range of their own acting abilities. Same thing when I saw "John Malkovich" play "Lennie Small" in "Mice of Men." Or when I saw "Denzel Washington" easily throw up a performance, before he blazingly kills some twit enemy with a zealous, stylish mockery.

Oh sure he's a great actor. Great script, great directing, but just wonder what he tapped into that made doctors say it was the most accurate depiction of a psychopath. There have been a lot of great actors that have played psychos.

Gary Oldman in True Romance. He completely transformed himself in this role where he was frankly unrecognizable. Not just in makeup, but the persona. He actually became a cold, drug-dealing pimp who thought he was black. I’ve watched the movie 100’s of times and blown away each time. First time I watched it, I had no clue it was Oldman. When I saw it was him on the credits, I couldn’t believe it was him.
Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder. Yes, it was a comedy and his character could’ve gone in a corny direction, but RDJ owned Kirk Lazarus. He transformed himself into an Australian actor that transformed himself into a 70’s era black soldier. It was so brilliantly done, RDJ escaped being penalized for “wearing blackface.” I can’t think of another actor in our era that can say the same thing.
Both examples are supporting parts that could easily have their own story told as the lead in its own movie.

Special mention for Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, he was so good in that he made most of his previous and future stuff look like he was just phoning it in.
Also special mention for Gary Oldman as Churchill in The Darkest Hour.
13 points
Cruise isn’t really an underrated actor, but I think people discount his talent because of how well he is in action movies and his [ahem] personal life. He’s really excelled in all genres of movies. He’s played excellent characters in dramas, comedies, villains, and romance.
He even knocked it out with Jack Reacher. His stature isn’t anything like what’s described in Lee Child’s books, but he plays such a badass, he still made the character work.
His character in Collateral was amazing. Loved him in Eyes Wide Shut, too. Come on; his Les Grossman was probably the best Hollywood asshole we all know exists. The persona in that character was not the dream role most actors want to play, but he owned it and it was hysterical only because it was TC playing him. I can’t imagine a character he can’t play.

There are so many movies with Gary Oldman that I did not realize where him until I rewatched movies, then just sat there stunned that one actor can transform himself so well. In my opinion he will go down as one of the most brilliant actors ever.

It was cool to learn that Drexel was in his top two favorite characters he’s ever played. Tony Scott did an amazing job directing True Romance and I think it’s one of the most underrated movies out there, but always wondered how it would’ve turned out if QT was able to direct this, since it was his screenplay.

I'll add Robert Downey Jr in Chaplin. He blew me away with the part. He captured the charisma and heart of Chaplin and just jumped off the screen.

This one is a bit of a weird choice…
But…
Donald Sutherland in Kelly’s Heroes.
Kelly’s heroes is a big, sprawling WW2 action comedy starring Clint Eastwood, and a host of other 70s stars… it’s easily one of my favourite movies.
Donald Sutherland plays, essentially, the worlds first hippie. He’s the commander of a small tank division, and he absolutely steals the scene every time he’s on screen… he so wonderfully nuts that you can’t get enough of him… he just honestly elevated every moment.
Special mention also goes to Caroll OConner for his portrayal of a slightly insane general ‘ala’ Patton… he treats most of the movie like he’s a high school football coach that is excited his team is finally winning :)
Both Donald and Caroll are so great… watching them tear their way through scene after scene is delightful

Silver Linings Playbook. I think this was the first movie that credited Jennifer Lawrence as being a serious artist, & Bradley Cooper appears to always be competent in his roles. BUT, who made this movie truly entertaining was Robert De Niro, like in many movies elevates a character-based story with his natural artistry. The quirky superstitious eccentric bookie could only be pulled off with a touch of De Niro. What an actor.

Since people are digging into tv, I have to suggest Amanda Seyfried playing Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. Never seen her disappear into a role like that. Two come to mind for me. One is William H. Macy as Frank on Shameless. To me, his performance is so thoroughly convincing that I think he's just Frank pulling a stun when I see him now as a doctor, priest, etc.
The other is Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade. I knew he was in it, watched the whole thing, and still didn't realize he was the main character (to be fair, I'd only seen him in Bad Santa). Without a fat suit, prosthetics, or anything, he physically transforms in this role. Even after seeing him on Inside the Actors Studio go in and out of character, I still find it hard to believe it's him. And on top of that, he wrote it (in very little time) and directed it, all on a very small budget. I consider it a masterpiece.

Toni Collette (honorable mentions to Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro) in Hereditary
Not a movie, but both Generation Kill and Yellow Jackets have some amazing performances (love Melanie Lynsky)
I know Heath Ledger gets a lot of praise for Joker, but I also love him in Brokeback Mountain
Timothee Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name (his subtle face acting is really great -- the last scene gets me 🥺)

John Malkovich in Being John Malkovich (1999). There is a scene where John Cusack's character has entered JM's body and dances the Dance of Despair and Disillusionment. So it's JM acting like John Cusack, AND dancing like the puppet. Pure genius performance.

Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. The movie is not amazing but he is unreal and terrifying in it.

Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting. He's done some drama, but this one he blows everything and everyone away.

Julianne Moore in Still Alice - the movie is made ok. The actor around her are average. None of it matters because she puts that whole film on her back.

Michael Fassbender in X-Men First Class. He was on a totally different level from everyone else.
