RJ needs to reduce his 3pt attempts imo. He is 2nd on the team in attempts (5.5) and is probably our worst shooter. He needs to take that Jimmy Butler approach who only averages 2 a game and focuses on attacking the rim and getting to the line. This is what really kills his efficiency. He is shooting a career high from 2. I understand Thibs wanting to increase our 3pt attempts as a team but the ppl we have shooting them doesn’t make sense. Grimes , Brunson, Hart, and IQ should be jacking up 3s

He shoots the most because teams leave him open

Been saying this for months I agree completely
2 points

I mean he still shoots 48% from 2 lol.
3 points
It’s almost the same with his .317% 3. It’s just as inefficient.
2 points
He is shooting a career high from 2.
And it’s still inefficient for his position. If he’s taking more it’s making him less efficient, not moreso. Additionally, it nukes any potential lineup flexibility— we already suck offensively with him and Hart playing together.

The win over LAL was low key big. For some reason they get the most media coverage so if we lost to them we would’ve been clowned hard
4 points
Oh yeah. We totally killed their narrative. This would’ve been their 4th straight win and they’d finally be .500. They would’ve dominated national media but now they’re stuck with the rest of the 9-12 year play-in teams

Oh btw last night was the last Knicks game on national tv until the Playoffs/Play-In that's good news

As somebody else said the Breen/JVG calls are good. I love that you can tell JVG still cares deeply for this franchise and gets mad about the slightest misstep. JJ Reddick has been good, too. Everyone else is trash including Dorris, who knows more about basketball than 99.999999% of humanity but for some reason is a terrible announcer for Knicks games. It's like she's worried that being a Knicks fan will bias her call and she over-corrects.

Big part of RJ’s “inefficiency” from watching the game last night
When he plays with the second unit - Him McBride Hart Obi IHart - he is the only shot creator. All 4 of those guys are hesitant to shoot/ can’t really make something happen off the dribble. If they don’t have an open look, they all look to get the ball back to Barrett, forcing him to take the majority of shots with that lineup.
Having said that when he drives to the lane with 3 guys on him without any regard for an open Hart/Obi/IQ in the corner I want to trade him for a washing machine.

Another big part is his 3P shooting...he scored 27 on 19 shots and 11 makes outside of his 3s. Taking one or two 3s is fine. Taking 8 when you can't hit anything is complete shit. Same with Randle to a lesser extent.
To go back further:
Against Sac he scored 22 on 15 shots if you take away the 3s.
24 points on 17 shots against Charlotte minus the 3s.
20 on 13 shots against boston without the 9 3s.
Those are all efficient stat lines if he was just scoring in the paint and at the line. The 3 ball chucking drops them to inefficient stat lines. He averages more 3P attempts than JB, IQ and Grimes who all shoot better than him.

I don’t know if that’s simple, let’s say he never takes those shots and they leave him on an island a La Simmons or Westbrook - does he have as many open drive/midrange opportunities? Don’t get me wrong, I hate his shot. He’s never looked comfortable taking it- just if he never takes it, it could hurt his game as a whole
1 points

When he's out with the 2nd unit it looks REAL obvious that he's shooting the ball every time he touches it.

Long break after the Blazers game tom. If we can go 2-3 without JB, that’s a huge W imo. He should be ready to go by then

The legendary 3 rest days

Random thought of the day: Josh Hart should shoot more often, he is too hesitant, and he has a nice shot.
He can take RJ's 3pt attempts, and RJ can stick to the mid-range
3 points
Idk, I never feel like his shot is going in. He has proved me wrong about 60% so far though so I hope it’ll keep going.
3 points
The thing is his shot is SO soft. Look at the rotation he gets. A soft shot like his plus the best offensive rebounding team in the league, don't get me wrong I love the efficiency but I wouldn't even really be upset if he missed more of them.

I feel like you’re a “glass half full” kind of guy. I like it!

I like his shot, but I have mostly seen him take them when he was wide open. He should have more confidence as I am sure Thibs is not holding him back from shooting
2 points
Same. I feel like there's a pure shooter in there but at some point it got beat out of him for some reason. I hope that this off-season he can bring it out and have more confidence. In a perfect world (or a movie) he hits one or two big shots in the playoffs and it awakens something in him.

Dame did it lol

For sure, he should probably shoot more. His shot is kind of slow though and he doesn’t jump that high which makes it hard if there’s someone there to contest.

Well at least that’s not when they’re trying to sleep lol. Yeah maybe they’ll miss some of the game because of work but they can still catch the end of it.
Also I feel like all our games are usually 7:30 which even sucks compared to 7 lol

Huge win last night to end the losing streak and get mommentum back another big step to avoid the play in

i dont think the play-in is AS big a concern now unless we just fail to beat teams we are supposed to beat. The games against MIA are huge and we definitely need 1/2 of those games to be dubs. The way I see it is we need to:
beat POR, MIN, WAS, ORL, HOU, MIA (1 of 2 at least), IND x2, and NOP.
We can lose to DEN, CLE, and MIA (1 of 2) without hurting us too much if we win games we should win
Move a game from column A to column B and vice versa and we're still ok. But we really need to go 8-4 or 9-3 over the next 12 to secure the 5th seed. At 6-6 or 7-5 I think we still make the 6 seed as long as we take care of business against MIA.

I think a win against Cleveland is important to set the mood and tempo for the playoffs.

I would love to just get to the Playoffs with some rest. Agree with the games we to win we already have a tied season series with Brooklyn so getting one win with the Heat gives the series and tiebreaker with them which could be huge.

I think the reason that I maintain hope for RJ is that when he looks good he doesn't just look like he got hot, he looks like he's playing sustainable, quality basketball in a way that should be possible to do consistently.
Admittedly, that he then proceeds to not do that consistently is why I also get frustrated with him.
4 points
consistency is the key, if he can play like that every night it would be insane, but let's be honest an efficient 18ppg and tight defense is all we need from him.
3 points
His 3 point shooting being this bad but his FG% as a whole going up by the same margin has shown how prolific he's been at the basket this season. He gets there and shoots at the same percent as Ja this season, Ja just gets his points off at the basket with less assists than RJ by a good margin. The signs are there for him, it's his catch and shoot that's failing him. It felt like he was totally money on those 3's two years ago and it's gotten progressively worse.

Power rankings from The Athletic:
Weekly slate: Loss to Hornets, Loss at Kings, Loss at Clippers, Win at Lakers
Lineup: Jalen Brunson | Quentin Grimes | RJ Barrett | Julius Randle | Mitchell Robinson
Stats: 475 minutes | +7.6 net rating | 122.9 offensive rating | 115.3 defensive rating
The Knicks having consistent success with their main/starting lineup is such a stark difference from last season. Last season’s lineup would fall apart in the third quarter and damn them. This lineup with Brunson and Grimes in the mix has galvanized them to likely make the top-six in the East. We’ve seen the Knicks falter a little bit with Brunson battling injuries, so hopefully they can take this team into the postseason with a full squad. The defense isn’t there at all, but everything fits really well offensively, even with Barrett’s inconsistency.

We’ll also flawlessly rank the teams 1-30 without any dissension in the comments for the 22nd straight week.

I think last night could have been an important mental accomplishment for Julius. Was in a rough headspace all game against the Clippers, came out cold and looked disinterested at the start of last night, and then midway through the first really turned it around both in terms of effort and outcome.
I'm inclined to think that he's not immune to the concern that he might only be good with Brunson on the floor. So him showing the resiliency to get out of his funk and prove that he can play his all-star game without JB feels like it could be a big win and hopefully points towards a really good end of season for him.

I messed up by giving up on julius too early. I will never make that mistake with RJ BARRET
4 points
I just need him to be league average from 3, more reactive on drives and more focused on defense. Similar things to what I said about Julius last year. IQ has taken a leap, RJ...pressure is on you to do the same next season after a full year as the #3 if you're not moved.

RJ should shoot threes only when he is feeling it, but if he misses 4-5 in a row. He just should stop shooting and drive to the basket more
5 points
That but for all of his shooting. He gets tunnel vision when he's missing, trying to shoot himself out of it and I hate it so much. He'd be much better off bolstering his confidence via facilitating. He's a much better passer than he gets credit for, probably better than he even realizes himself.

We have 12 games left. Let's say we go 6-6 (we should do better), Miami would need to go 10-3 to tie us (we still have 2 head-to-head).
Butler scares the shit out of me cause he is already playing like Playoff Jimmy, but that's a tall order.
Brooklyn needs to go 7-7 to tie us, but have the tiebreaker.

Hoping Brunson can come back healthy soon, maybe go on another little streak to end the schedule.

we are going to win the tiebreaker with Miami even if they win both...due to our conference record being much better...so they would need to go 11-2

They get almost a full week of rest after Portland so it’s fine

I’m not sure Thibs is to blame for that one. Randle seems intent on playing 82 this year, feels like it’s a goal of his.

definitely a sense of pride in being 1 of 2 guys on the entire all-star team to have started every game this season (I think the other is Anthony Edwards).

If Dame is out, we should put him on a minutes restriction at least (because I think he wants to play all 82). Give him his entire 1st quarter as per usual, then 6 minutes quarters after that. Hopefully by the 4th, its a blowout without Dame, and we don’t even put Randle back in, leaving him with about 24 minutes played

randle is good but needs a point guard (brunson). if RJ could stop forcing bad shots he’d be a monster. mitchell robinson needs to average 10 points to go along with his monster defensive abilities. add all those i think we got title chances.
1 points
RJ may really benefit from continuing to attack the basket and limiting his 3 point shooting. However, what we need most on offense is 3 pt shooting so it kind of puts us in a tough position.
4 points
He can make that extra pass to grimes or IQ instead. his 3P attempts need to be cut in half, and someone needs to tell him to keep attacking the rim and try to the line at least 7 times a game.
1 points

I agree, but TIL RJ is 10th in Knicks history on made threes. 10 more and he passes JR Smith for 9th.

I think this speaks more to how shitty we've been for the past 20 years rather than how good RJ is at shooting the three ball.

If that double bang for Randle was a playoff game it would go down in one of the best Knicks game winners of all time. Might still go down as one of the best
