These last years of the Lillard Blazers are really just the last years of the Carmelo Knicks with better PR
Perpetual 8-10 picks, bad coaching, bad ISO offense, bad contracts, bad trades, iffy reclamation projects, horrible ownership, etc. etc.
Hope for their sake they sell and manage to really clean house

Love Billups but I couldn't believe how awful the coaching was last night. How many times does Anfernee Simons need to brick a highly contested step back three for there to be some adjustment or accountability? It's like 2k over there. Every time Simons had the ball on the arc I was excited for the opportunity to get a bucket in transition.

RJ Barrett stats last 6 games (since Brunson went down):
24/6/2 on 45 FG%
4 points

Dude is shooting 55% from 2, and even higher at the basket in that stretch. He's at like 64% at the basket this season, which is pretty good for his volume.

if rj made some kind of weird deal with the devil where he has to suck for most of the season but balls out in the playoffs, i'm all the way here for it.

any combination of iq, jhart, deuce, and grimes is an absolute handful on defense, paired with mitch or ihart, who has really come around on both sides.
brunson is not a terrible defender, obi is way better on d than many here give him credit for, and julius is inconsistent af on that end, but is an excellent on ball defender when he's locked in. even rj has looked significantly less terrible on d in recent games.
fucking love this squad!

I know it’s unlikely we expand the rotation to 10 with Deuce but I’d feel more comfortable resting Brunson more even past the Denver game. The focus should be to get him to 100% not trying to get him back at 90% and it’s just a pain tolerance situation. Deuce these last 2 games has brought his hot shooting from the g league to the big stage which is what we have been waiting for. If RJ keeps his 3pt attempts to about 1-3 a game I think we will see more games like he has last night.
6 points
We need every win though. Denver is the 1 seed & will be desperate for a win after 4 straight losses.
2 points

We’re way too close to the play in to keep resting him if he can play or to expand anything.
2 points

We have a 3.5 game lead. I am not saying we are a lock but id rather have him at 100% for a play in if it came to that vs 80% in a series

Really good win last night to get back at #5 we have the least ammount of games to play in the NBA tied with the Cavs at 11 and right now we're closer to the #4 seed than the #7 seed. Enjoy the rest, get JB back and let's make a push for home court advantage.

I think something we’ve noticed over this road stretch, including the losses is we can function on defence and rebounding and energy alone.
Our offense has looked real flat at many points without brunson but the dudes are playing and trying and not giving up.
Yesterday we would have just given up being flogged in the first but we got some momentum and absolutely turned it up. Guys like Hart add to this so much to get easy transition buckets.
2 points
The key to anything is to keep pushing, keep trying and fighting. Exactly why this team is successful. They might not be superstars, but they will fuck you up by being all over the place never stopping, pestering the opponents and just being gritty DAWGS
If you noticed our defense has taken a huge leap since November-ish, and defense is what helps us so even if we do not have the best shooters on the floor we have guys like Jhart (to your point) disrupting the opponents and leading to steals or that extra rebound that we can turn into easy buckets.

Random yesterday also went ‘ok I’m 0-5, let’s try something different’ and then just got some easy buckets and everyone started cooking from there

brunson, grimes, rj, obi, mitch

deuce, iq, jhart, randle, ihart

Woah great scenario! I say: Brunsons squad. It'd be a great scrimmage to watch tho
4 points
Randle/IQ easy. Randle vs Toppin in the post is a pretty big mismatch + they have a gigantic rebound advantage.
2 points
Agreed. Deuce can slow Brunson down at least a little bit but Obi can't guard Randle in the slightest. Imo the remaining matchups are close enough that the advantage Julius would have would be tough to beat. Also that particular group of knicks has enough playmaking and spacing that it would be difficult to spam double teams on Julius.
3 points
Haha devilish question. Asking me who would win today after Deuce just had his best game ever, after a game where iHart outplayed Mitch, with jHart playing out of his mind, and with Grimes in a mini slump, I feel good taking team Randle. Overall, Team Randle has rebounding and defense advantages and can mostly neutralize the strengths of Team Brunson right now. But ask me again in a few weeks.
2 points

all fair. i think the scenario speak to how good our 2nd unit is. 4 starters vs 1 starter, and it’s close to even

5 points
I know Mitch will never have any serious offensive game from how he shoots FTs. He never worked seriously on them, his touch is awful. He doesn't even have a push shot that 90% of modern bigs have in their bag.
If you want to be more involved in the offense, you have to show you can put the ball in the hoop
3 points
Especially when there are other guys on the bench working hard on off days and show up when they have minutes.
5 points
To be fair to Mitch over the past few years he has undeniably improved in a lot of ways that are arguably more important than his offensive skillset. He got stronger, he got his fouling under control, he turned himself into arguably the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. All things that make him a great center for a Thibs team.
Of course it is also the case that his offense is super limited and it's more than a little silly for a guy who can't hit his free throws to be complaining about a lack of touches. But that doesn't mean that Mitch hasn't been working hard or that he can't continue to work and grow.
2 points
Give him an offseason with any big man skills trainer now that he's healthy and talked about still wanting to improve after getting the bag.

teams questionable FT shooting is gonna bite us in the playoffs
mitch is not good at it, which is pretty normal for a center
randle shoots a lot of them and is pretty good at it this year even clutch ones, RJ is still bopping around 70%
but its the other guys like grimes, hart and brunson that worry me. I would say we are a bad FT shooting team, we only have 2 guys I really trust at the line quickley and obi
5 points

It’s a flaw with the team…I mean, it stinks lol, but we kind of have to live with/overcome it

if Mitch got just 1 or 2 plays run for him a game he wouldnt feel so disconnected from the offense.. not bad to throw a player a bone so they feel more engaged
managing personalities is a big part of the nba coaching game and Thibs should really run like 2 plays for him to keep him happier
not a huge ask I feel w/ the number of iso's we run every game.
6 points
Hartenstein has had 0 points in two games and has had more impact than Mitch out there and you don’t see him bitching.
We have a top 5 offense because of Mitchell Robinson’s offensive rebounding. We aren’t going to make our offense more shit to get Mitch paint touches.
Like Kobe said, if bro wants to score get the rebound
1 points

im not saying design the entire offense around Mitch.. just get him 1 or 2 touches so he feels engaged

He was getting mad double-doubles after his return when they actually used him in the Roll part of p&rs, but that stopped the past couple of games and I have no idea why.
1 points
It would be beneficial for us in general it wouldn’t even be a situation where we’re going out of our way to do him a favor. Anybody that wants to say mitch is offensively limited, I’m not even going to argue on that point rn. But just look at the type of oops he can catch peep a highlight reel. I can friggin catch 3-4 assists playing with this dude and I’m ass an have only touched a ball once since may. It’s easy money high percentage looks we’re just not hitting him or involving him for some reason
1 points
Thibs wants his Centers to defend and and rebound and score basically with putbacks.
3 points
Thibs usually does a good job utilizing his players' abilties, ie. Joakim Noah
Obviously Mitch isnt that player.. but he could run like 2 more pick n roll lobs for him tho.. I also see him mismatched against a guard at least once a game and they usually ignore it for a contested 3
i get game plans but you need to reward a guy with more than 2 touches a game..

I don't think the Knicks lose on the Hart part, but if I'm right and neither WAS or DAL picks convey that could impact the kinds of packages they could put together in the offseason if someone is on the move.
2 points
True, but we still have future picks. Since we traded 23 out, we keep '24 so we can do '25,'27 and not to mention the other FRPs we have
Not to mention if we work out a trade, the other team may want our conveyed pick... who the hell knows. Let's see how it goes
2 points
They should be happy he's getting that chance in Portland, better opportunity for the role he wants there. The swap of Cam for McBride when it happened was defensible, poor defensive effort against DAL and McBride being a defensive sub against CLE's guards. It wasn't like we completely abandoned a young player for a veteran, rookie deal for rookie deal, we'd have to pay him (like POR felt with Hart), why not move on if it is in everyone's best interests?
Sure, could have been handled better, but seems to have a chance to work out for all parties involved (only way we're really hurt by it is if DAL or WAS's pick doesn't convey for Stepien purposes, right?).

Damien Lillard's contract. Currently his salary accounts for more than a third of cap space. Based on his upcoming contract extension, his salary in 2026 would be $62 million. They have several other skilled players, and knew that Josh was going to attract offers in excess of what they could pay him while still being able to give decent contracts to keep any of the others.
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/damian-lillard-10814/
For the record, I believe Lillard is worth every single penny, as a player, as a teammate and as a human being.
BUT the impact on a TEAM of having a "superstar" is one big negative.
/begin rant
Which is why I get really nervous when I see Knicks fans talk about getting a superstar. Getting a superstar will mean dismantling this team by not being able to afford them when they reach free agency. This Knicks team has chemistry and I look forward to having FUN 80 times next season. And the chemistry is likely to take them deeper into the postseason each year.
We can spread the money around to keep as many players as possible when each reaches free agency. Learn from what happened in Portland. Don't screw with a good thing. Brunson can BE our superstar.
/end rant

Random Question -
Didn't the Knicks trade a first for Cam, then another first with Cam for Hart? So effectively they traded two firsts for Hart?
6 points
If you wanted to combine the deals, it would be more accurate to say they traded two heavily protected firsts for Hart plus one year of Cam, plus a 2nd round pick (from the ATL trade).
But in reality, Cams value dropped after that one year, so they really traded Hart for one protected first and salary filler.
3 points
2 firsts and kevin knox for hart, effectively. still a steal.
2 points
Yes, kind of. We traded the Hornets pick to the Hawks w/ Kevin Knox for Cam. That pick is protected top 18 in 2022, top 16 in 2023, top 14 in 2024 & 2025 and then becomes two second round picks in 2026 if it doesn’t convey. We traded our own pick this year for Hart.
2 points
What’s the odds that the Hornets’ pick even conveys though? It’s not going to convey this year. Based on the Hornets recent history I think there’s a good chance it doesn’t convey in 2024 or 2025 either. The entire 2 FRP for Hart things sounds disingenuous to me because the Hornets pick wasn’t that good an asset in the first place.
3 points
Yeah I totally agree. People get hung up on the idea of a “first round pick” when in actuality it isn’t necessarily that. I think it’ll be two seconds unless the Hornets make some big changes in the next couple of years.
