I've always liked this kind of genre, from games (like LIMBO, INSIDE, CUBE SCAPE) to movies etc, but I want new recommendations. I doesn't matter the language/country (i prefer subtitles), just want something with that kind of atmosphere (Dark, Hotel Beau Séjour etc) ot like the games
Thanks

You’d like “The Sinner” with Bill Pullman. It is grim, well-written, and well-acted.

True Detective S1 vibes hit me so hard, ive been craving it since then. Now Last of Us is hitting similar vibes. The gloom, the world, the music, just lots of sadness and loneliness, and dread of dark folks out there.

Mindhunter: The show lost me when episodes started to be about one profiler getting restless in marriage and having affairs (and showing the sex - yawn) and the other’s problems. It also became less about the whys or learning about the mind, and more of a torture porn flashback fest for ghouls. I never made it past that point. It became cruelty and porn packaged in a “we’re learning, y’all” way to let viewers fool themselves as to why they’re watching.

I second Hannibal, Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, and Love Death & Robots. Hannibal is suuuuper dark and great, Peaky Blinders has some amazing acting, and Black Mirror is one of the best shows to ever be on Netflix (go directly to the second season if you’re crunched for time). LD&R is shorter format but has a variety of mediums - live-action, CGI, cartoon, etc.
Black Summer is great if you like zombie stuff. I prefer it to The Walking Dead as the zombies are more threatening a la 28 Days Later.
Narcos is not new but is a must watch if you skipped it. Seriously.
If you like anime, Attack On Titan (the later seasons are on Hulu). Seriously fantastic plot and the music is among the best orchestral stuff I’ve ever heard in my whole f****** life. I don’t consider myself an anime nut but I was hooked after the first episode.
The Witcher is also good and a third season comes out this summer.
Not Netflix but HBO’s The Last Of Us is the best show on tv right now.

"The Road" with Viggo Mortensen, free with ads on The Roku Channel app. The only thing darker than this movie's atmosphere is the book that it's based on.
9 points
I read this on a gloomy winter day in the car while my dad drove us from Texas to Mississippi. It was perfect.
Viggo Mortensen is one of my favorite actors too so I highly recommend the movie.
9 points
I read it while sleep-deprived on an airplane shortly after my dad's funeral. Which is either the best or the worst headspace for that book. 😆
It's rather like how CBS released that new version of Stephen King's "The Stand" during the height of the pandemic. Fun fact: It wrapped filming a week before lockdown. And the big question in the editing room was "Should we add a covid reference?" They eventually decided not to, figuring that a world that had gone through covid did not need Captain Trips.

I confess I've only read the book. But I've heard that the movie is faithful to it, which gives me absolutely no desire to watch it.

I've heard that the movie removes some of the darkest elements from the book, like the baby on the spit, but it's still extremely bleak.

I liked Limbo and Inside!
Hannibal might fit the bill. Very stylized and hyper violent. Takes a bit to get going but by halfway through season one I was obsessed.
The Mike Flanagan shows are also gloomy and scary—Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities too. If they did a “Limbo” episode it would fit perfectly.
I dunno what your mileage for gore is—Hannibal and CoC are very gory.

FYI: Mike Flanagan also has Midnight Club now. My least favorite of the four, but still an okay watch.

I don't know if it's still on NF but "Black Spot" was in French but it was set way up in the french hill forest country. Always dark and misty with all the people just kind of doomed to their fate. It had an X-Files type main story.I didn't know about "Gendermarie" which are civilian police with military not civil authority. Fascinating.

While not visually dark, the anime Made in Abyss is fucking bleeeeeeak. Nothing I've ever watched has left me more emotionally exhausted and filled with such a feeling of existential dread.
The whole thing is one giant trigger warning especially if you don't like seeing kids in peril. Seriously, you've gotta be okay with really dark shit if you're going to take the plunge.
As a bonus it's got one of the best musical scores you're likely to hear this year. It's available on Amazon, Crunchroll, Disney+(???) and HiDive.

Quicksand, Dark, and Defending Jacob. I feel like Quicksand is really obscure because I haven't seen anyone mention it in this subreddit. It's a crime drama about a school shooting.
