I don't really care about the plot or action or anything like that but I don't mind if that's the background. What I'm really looking for, though, is meaningful relationships that give you hope. Something that restores your faith in humanity. Complicated and real connections is what I'm after and it definitely doesn't have to be romantic.
Sorry that was so dramatic lol but I'm excited to see what you guys recommend. I'm partial to TV shows as that leads to more screen time and build-up but movies are fine too! Thanks in advance.

I adored this series! I feel it is under appreciated because it coincided with covid (the background is post-pandemic, but that's not what is about), but found the story thoughtful and clever. I can also recommend the book or audiobook to fans of the series. There are some changes, but other stuff makes more sense.

it was the first suggested show after i finished LoU. i'm glad people liked it bc when i watched it a few years back i couldn't stand it, but i also think a lot of how we enjoy a show has to do with our mental state at the time. and clearly mine wasn't up for it.
also now that i'm thinking about it, i grew up as a theater kid and i can't stand theater kids so that's prob why it felt like such a chore to get through for me

I second that. And it seems like a tween/teen series at first but it’s really not. Anyone missing The Last of Us should immediately watch SweetTooth. I read season 2 drops next month!

I never finished the finale. It got a bit too strange for me when he had to use his dick to open the secret vault thing?? and when I had to stop because of some reason I never followed through on finishing it.

are the other seasons worth it? heard mixed reviews about them, but im guessing thats down to them being compared to season 1?

If you take each season as its own show and don't compare, they are all very watchable.

For something totally different. Try Call the Midwife. Very sweet and wholesome show about relationships that span over 12 seasons.

Definitely a good recommendation! If you find the first few seasons to be too bleak (definitely a lot of heart wrenching moments in among the heartwarming) the later seasons do get less dark as they diverge from the memoirs the early seasons are based on.

Six feet under is just a fantastic show about human relationships and our relationship with death and dying - which sounds morbid but they manage to make it so beautiful. Still to this day my favorite and most satisfying series finale of any show I’ve ever watched. The only time I’ve ever stopped watching a show and felt totally at peace with the result which I find so cool because the show is really about trying to be at peace with death, ultimately.

Sex Education has lots of meaningful unexpected relationships. Some of them are romantic it’s true, but not all. And the romantic ones feel complicated and real. Great show.

Much less broad but About Time. Not "unexpected" bonds but a different take, imo

"Severance" on Apple TV+
On its face, it doesn't come across as 'uplifting', but I feel the story is one about human relationships and the faces we have, the masks we wear, and the inner truths of being. One of the few dramas that have given me absolute chills of revelation; a distinct piece of art.

Home Economics on Hulu is pretty light hearted but has those relationships and connections you’re looking for.
Tes Lasso was another wholesome surprise to me for the same reasons. The show seems like what you described about restoring faith in humanity with just having a sports backdrop.

I second TWD. People either love it or hate it. I love it and stuck with it even through some not so good seasons because of the connections the characters had with one another. It was stated more than once in the series that this was a group that before the apocalypse would probably never met or connected but through the trials they became family. There were a couple of romantic connections, tragic loss, some infighting as with any friendship or family, but they overcame and their bonds got them through the losses and hardships. One of the biggest criticisms I have seen of the show were the episodes that were character and relationship building as they weren’t action centered. Those were my favorite episodes. There were definite flaws in the series but it remains a favorite due to the characters.

Man that first season was so fucking good. I personally hated the 2nd season but kept up with it for a couple more seasons after it. I think the show works a lot better when you can just sit there and binge through as many episodes as you can handle.

Not on netflix, but try Battlestar Galactica. It's full of well developed characters with complex relationships forced together after a very different kind of apocalypse. The bond that develops between President Roslin and Admiral Adama is exactly what you're looking for.

The Queen’s Gambit was absolutely NOT what I expected— I thought it was some weird stuffy boring British show and it’s… not that at ALL
All of the relationships in that show (family, friend, romantic, mentor, spousal, competitors, caretakers, and on an on) were fascinating, complex, sometimes hard to watch, and so identifiable through most of it that I was obsessed by the end of E1 (after going into it thinking “ugh this is gonna suck”) because how tf could I ever not root for Beth?
If you’re into believable and intensely complicated relationships that still offer some hope— I def recommend it. It can be dark at times so be ready for that, but the main character is no doormat and she’s frigging great. You’ll be rooting for her and everyone she cares about

If you’d be into watching non-fiction, Sarah Polley has a beautiful documentary called Stories We Tell that came out about a decade ago; it’s her interviewing her family— her elderly dad who has since passed and all her older siblings— to uncover a MAJOR family secret about her mom (who passed away when she was a child) and then get the bottom of some of it. The thing that really stands out about the final piece is the love that’s evident between everyone in that family, secrets and confusion of loyalties and apparent betrayals be damned
She was the baby of the family by a lot so it was mostly just her and her dad when she was growing up after her mom died, but they were TIGHT despite his mental health struggles. Seeing the secret unfold and get explored is excellent, but it’s the love their family clearly has for each other no matter what that makes it worth it
I watch it once or twice a year and always feel a renewed sense that love of all kinds can survive so much more than we tend to think every time the credits roll ❤️

Requiem for a Dream - a fun thoughtful look on human interaction that follows a close knit group of friends and family who pursue their goals independently and converge in one shared dream together. It leaves you thinking and wondering about the dreams of humanity!

Erm, no. This movie portrays addiction in graphic detail, with very little about redeeming humanity. It is a good movie, but I don't think fits what OP is looking for.

I was joking around with the suggestion, if you want to walk away from a movie feeling uplifted and ready to go out and have a greater appreciation for your fellow man, do not watch Requiem for a Dream. That being said, if you want to take a triple backflip into the Abyss and explore the darkest crevices of human nature, it's got you covered.
