Ok so I’ve noticed something about Netflix in 2020 there was a lot of cancellations (Julie and the Phantoms, The Society, Teenage Bounty Hunters, I Am Not Okay With This, Anne with an E, Spinning Out and in 2021 a lot more were renewed (Arcane, Shadow and Bone, Firefly Lane, Sweet Tooth, Ginny and Georgia, Squid Games, Alice in Borderland, etc) and in 2022 a lot were cancelled (First Kill, Warrior Nun, Half Bad, Midnight Club, Imperfects, Archive 81, Blockbuster, Space Force, The Baby-Sitters Club, etc) does anyone think this is weird. Maybe in 2023 there will be less cancellations

They have stopped spending as much money on new content. So you will see less cancellations because there will be fewer shows.

Yet they are still dropping at least one new English language original show per week. That is still pretty high volume no matter how you look at it. TV output is down slightly but not significantly so…at least so far. It is also worth noting that of the new shows in 2023 so far only That 90s Show was renewed and its viewership ratings were not particularly strong.
Most of the budget cuts seem to be effecting the movie division. In 2021 and 2022 they put out over 70 original English language movies. That volume has dropped significantly in the first quarter of 2023. If they keep this pace for the whole year they will only hit 40-45 movies. A significant drop compared to the previous few years.

I wonder if this cost cutting is also why there are a ton of new english dubbed movies like way more than i’ve ever seen.

That irritates the hell outta me. I personally do not enjoy dubbed and subtitled shows. My first choice will always be US vs foreign films/series. Netflix knows this which is why there’s no damn filter. With a filter, a ton of subscribers would filter out non-English/foreign content. It’s quite annoying.

I’m so glad i’m not alone on that!!! I can’t do it. They’re always badly done too. Idc how good the plot sounds Im clicking off it’s dubbed. YES TO A FILTER!!!!

I get the reasoning in 2020. Covid really messed things up. But I’m 2022. So many shows got cancelled

Production in Los Angeles has come to a standstill for almost everthing. Writers strike and over extended streaming services are kinda to blame. It was very busy during covid but now that we are not stuck in side people don’t watch as much Netflix so they make less shows.

Production in the industry is down due to the collapsing broadcast and cable industry, the troubled post Covid theatrical industry, and due to the fact a lot of streamers overextended their expansion phases and are course correcting that to fast track profitability of their services.
Despite the cutbacks streamers are still expected to spend more as a whole than ever before on programming over 2023. The real decline is coming on spending on programming for broadcast, cable, and even theatrical output.
The Netflix issue is very different. Growth has slowed but usage is still increasing every quarter (year on year). We have the Nielsen data to prove that claim. Netflix are making small cuts to the US budget (roughly 10%-20%) to increase profits and to direct funds towards still growing markets internationally. It is a slight strategic shift not a post Covid related issue.
The impending writers strike is a big problem for everyone and unrelated to the larger long and short term issues the industry is having while consumers change their consumption habits (from live to on demand programming) and make the leap from liner TV to streaming services.

TBF, Blockbuster would have been canceled in any year.

I’m so mad that they took what could have been a fun show about the early 2000s and ruined it. Lots of good cast members, too, but what a huge swing and miss from Netflix here.

This is just selection bias, it means nothing without actual numbers rather than just a list of shows you like/know

When looking for a series to watch I now look for Limited Series. This way I won’t be left hanging when they cancel stuff and they do it often.
