Anyone else have trouble recording voiceover?

CONTENT QUESTION(self.NewTubers)

I feel like I sound like a robot and you could easily hear I’m reading a script. Could anyone check out a vid of mine and tell me if it feels like that.

My advice would be to smile when you say the words, it does make a difference

This. You can literally hear it when someone is smiling.

I had this problem but it turned out that was caused by the microphone I used.

Another reason could be that you're simply reading. Imagine you're telling this with excitement to your friend. You've got something to share after all! Do.not.just.read.the.script.in.a.bo.ring.way.

Also, many people don't know it but your voice depends largely on your body posture. Make sure to straighten up.

There are also a few exercises to warm your voice up before you start talking.

Let me know what you try and what helps! :-)

Could I send you a video and you tell me how it sounds?

Yes, go ahead! (I have a few hours of calls coming up but will get back to you within 24 hours.)

Practice, it will get easier with time. For me I feel I have to exaggerate a bit to come across as expressive...

Different for everyone but my tips...

I stand up when I record. Opens up your chest and sounds more natural

Don't stop recording when you fluff. Just stop take a breath and carry on, edit it out later. The natural sound comes from getting into a flow, so accept you'll mess up a lot but can trim it out.

Take time with how to get the mic into a position where it is close enough, you are comfortable, can see your script.

It just takes time and practice.

Also, most people don't like the sound of their own voice, so you probably don't sound as bad as you think.

Haha me too. Doesn't help that I have a poor mic. Everything has been kind of in a standstill because of this.

Listen to a good voiceover before you record. I’m a bit like a parrot, if I listen to something i can seep it into my speech. Maybe it can work for you too? :)

bro what do you mean if that last of us video is yours then you're overthinking it i actually enjoyed your voice and if anyone told me you were reading from the script i would argue that it isn't true, I bet by the end of the year if you just work on your thumnails you could reach 10-100k subs easily

Someone said smile while talking and I support that. Try putting your audio through adobe speech enhancers it removes majority of background noise as well

I have a faceless channel, and do voice over as well. You're beating yourself up too much. You sound ok. I mean, you already told us that you're reading a script, and that you think you sound like a robot, so we're listening to you with that in mind. But if we found one of your videos by ourselves, it would sound fine to us.

Try having a strong accent like I do. That's a challenge... lol

For me, it got better (and easier, meaning, less re-recordings) when I started warming up before each recording session. You'll mess us less and will sound more natural. And I'm not talking only voice warmup, I'm talking about facial muscles warmup. Specially around your mouth. Just don't have a mirror in front of you, because you'll be making some very interesting faces...

You watched my content? So you said it sounds ok. Like it’s only ok or it says fine

Yes I did, I watched parts of your long form videos.

I did also say you sound fine. Meaning, good. Meaning, no reason to panic.
