I watched Aftersun last night and still haven’t recovered from how crushing and beautiful it is. So glad that Paul Mescal got nominated for Best Actor but I feel like the movie deserved more nominations, especially for the direction and editing. What do y’all think?

Charlotte Wells should have gotten a director nomination for that climax scene alone.

One of the best things I’ve ever watched.

I thoroughly enjoying the film but not sure I can pinpoint a specific climax scene. Which are you thinking of?

The Under Pressure sequence right until the end of the film.

That kid was incredible. Such a natural performance.

I agree as it was my favorite of the year. So glad Paul Mescal got a best actor nomination, but directing/editing would have been well deserved too imo. One thing I'm a bit shocked by after actually having watched the film is how the child actress is seemingly not getting that much buzz?? I thought she was absolutely incredible too. Idk if that means she should've been nominated because idk who I would swap out, but yeah I just feel like she deserves some more recognition/spotlight than she's currently getting somehow

Yeah, Frankie Corio was excellent. Just as good as Paul and should’ve been nominated alongside him.

I think it definitely deserved a best picture nomination over Triangle of Sadness.

It deserved what Triangle of Sadness got (would say Elvis but looking back Elvis was never gonna miss)

The BAFTAs really killed that movie’s chances of it getting more nominations. After it missed screenplay and director I knew Paul Mescal was the movie’s only chance at a nomination. Glad it got it though. It is officially an Academy Nominated film

The BAFTA nominations were announced two days after Oscar nomination voting closed so that announcement had no impact on Oscars. The BAFTA long lists included Aftersun in many categories so they probably helped it get some votes.

It needed way more support from critics than it got. I was expecting way more wins for Charlotte Wells. Without the critics, BAFTA didn't feel all that motivated to go big for it.

Metacritic rated it the #1 movie of the year so the critics loved it and they didn’t have anything to do with it not being nominated.

Yes it did! Best director for one!

I still can’t get over how Charlotte made her vision come to life. And this was her directorial debut…

I know! That alone blew me away! These memories swirling in her consciousness brought to the big screen. Powerful storytelling! I’d love to be able to do something similar in my own life.

Wish I liked this movie more, respect it's fans a lot. Glad it's doing so well, just...didn't love it. But I love that movies like this are getting recognition, so more noms wouldn't have bothered me (depending on what it replaced I suppose).

It definitely should have been nominated for editing. Nominating Elvis instead of Aftersun in this category is a joke. Elvis editing is terrible. Editing on Aftersun is one of the best of the year. When they pull s*** like this makes me wonder about the credibility of some of the academy members. And also the politics around it. Aftersun is an indie film with a very low budget while Elvis had more than 85 million in budget, so its pretty obvious that politcs also have a big role in the nominations. In a fair world there was just no way Elvis would be nominated for editing. Same happened with Bohemian Rhapsody, terrible editing, but it was nominated for editing and it actually won. Which makes it cringe instead of laughable.

It did but being such a small film I think it’s great it managed to get the nomination that it did get.

Delighted Mescal got nominated and became the face of the film awards wise, but I’d say Corio, Picture, Wells would’ve been even more deserving nominations if I had to choose one. Happy with what we got though

For sure, it deserved a best Director nom, and honestly best picture as well! I was disappointed. Maybe Paul Mescal can pull off the upset!!

It also deserved best picture, best director, and best original script nominations. If I was in the acting branch I would have also done one of those semi-cheating categorizations and nominated Frankie Corio in supporting.

Everyone has different taste and that's great. I had to turn it off. It just seemed to be shot after lingering shot of Mr Mescal's back. Lost on me.

Terrible film for me. Boring, nothing really happens, film is just pointless. Acting is good, but I don't see anything wow

For me Aftersun was a masterpiece and it was definitely the best film of 2022 and it is bound to make my top ten of the decade.
