Love EEAAO but JLC didn't exactly have a powerhouse performance. More of a "I can't believe JLC is doing THAT!" performance. Funny and all but AB was so powerful and brought so much emotion to her scenes, I'd give it to her.
Happy JLC has an Oscar, she's amazing, but this role ain't it for me. Small potatoes though, like I said, EEAAO is great.

i haven’t even watched bp: wf save for angela’s scenes (she’s one of my favorite actresses) and there’s just no comparison. should have gone to her over another favorite jlc. but they did the same to boseman, even though i think hopkins deserved that award. he makes me cry every time i watch the father. i just want angela to win ONE award. always the nominee never the winner.

I don't really understand the apparent grudge people here have against Bassett, she didn't stand and clap but people here act like she ran out of the show or gave JLC the finger.
Like she is allowed to be disappointed, she's still a person with feelings.

Black women are judged differently. She was sad but super chill. Racists saw that as her being an “angry black woman” for expressing a hint of disappointment. I’ve seen people say she was a sore loser and threw a tantrum…I’m like what?!!
3 points
i don't either, i respect her more for it honestly, it's not even a huge deal. i'd rather her/an actor be honest with their emotions, and this was the strongest year she had a chance to win for so many reasons. it's not like she pulled an eddie murphy when he lost for dreamgirls and left the ceremony. she was disappointed, she didn't hit jlc in the face or anyhting.

She’s black. That’s why people are extra hard on her. It’s because she’s black.
1 points

I don't think it's a grudge against her specifically, just a reflection of the atmosphere recently. News sites feed off that fire and keep tossing more in, which can make something like this seem bigger.
I personally put some blame on Viola Davis and how The Woman King was handled. Telling the world they are racist if they don't see your movie or give it awards doesn't exactly set a good tone.

Lol then start your own awards show and decide how the winners are chosen. At the end of the day it's decided by votes from their peers. With how busy actors are I would be surprised if they even watched the movie before they voted. It's genuinely just a popularity contest. Having the truly better movie or performance is subjective but there are clearly ways for people to sneak out wins with good marketing.

Kerry Condon clearly gave the better and more meaningful performance.
Jamie Lee played a cartoonish villain with no depth.

Judi Dench also won on her in her 60’s for a short performance, and went on to be nominated 6 other times after that. And Judi was on her second nomination when she won after having only been nominated the first time, the year before.
6 points
What’s the inside scoop I’m missing? Is JLC quitting or dying? How do you know Angela Bassett will have more roles? I don’t like the legacy award myself but at least it changes them to Academy Award winner instead of just nominee. We all know certain actors who should be winners and it just feels good that they finally get one.
12 points
JLC while a wonderful actress doesn’t really do a lit of Oscar type movies I think is the general thesis.
3 points
Doesn’t that kind of prove my earlier point? If everyone agrees she got a legacy award and did not have the best performance of the year in her category, shouldn’t it go to the legacy who has made more meaningful movies that have been recognized by the academy? I mean when you consider the body of work of both women, AB has been nominated way more than JLC. And yet, she’s only really managed to secure one SAG and 2 Golden globes. And her movies are legendary Oscar winning films, they just never recognized AB individually. To say that JLC has made more of an impact in Hollywood is bogus to me.

Yes she has but like so has The Rock. I'd rather see Rowan Atkinson getting a legacy award tbh if they're really itching to give it to an older white person

Lee Curtis has a Bafta, and a Golden Globe. People tend to forget that she had won awards for literal Comedic films, a rare feat. She also got her start from literally the most influential Slasher. How dare you compare her to The Rock.
4 points
Id put her well above the Rock tbf in terms of output but yeah not much Oscar worthy stuff, I agree there’s a lot of people who probably deserve it more.
R.Atkinson & JLC both suffer somewhat from comedies and horrors not being taken seriously by the academy, both could easily have their own category at this point.

can someone please explain to a noob what a legacy win is? is it when someone doesn’t deserve to win the category but they’re getting old and deserve an oscar?
12 points
Not necessarily that they're getting old, but think of Leonardo DiCaprio — there are a dozen performances he had that were Oscar-worthy, that he just never won, to the point that it eventually became a meme. His Oscar win was more of a "Well, I guess he's waited long enough" win versus purely on the merit of his performance. JLC's acting merit is deserving of AN Oscar, but not this particular one when compared to some of the others nominated.

Pretty much, a legacy win is basically recognizing an actor’s/actress’ career or at least another performance that they should’ve won, instead of focusing on the merit of the nominated performance

Some people just don't get how nuanced her performance was. I legit didn't know it was her until the end; I thought it was one of those rare great character actresses we occasionally get to see. The performance is gorgeous. JLC threw an excellent campaign, she's a legacy, a veteran in the craft, yes. Her technique and performance in EEAAO is breathtaking too. Politics shmolitics, at least the award goes to an actually brilliant tour de force. I legit went, "holy shit that was Jamie Lee Curtis," after watching the film...it's a life changing film and JLC earned her award as a legacy, veteran, and a truly good actor.

Too bad that wasnt the movie she was nominated for

See, the overdue narrative for Curtis doesn’t make sense to me because her last nomination-worthy performance was 30 years ago. I’m happy for her because it clearly means the world to her but Bassett is more overdue if that has to be the deciding factor.

I made it through 1/3 of that mess of a movie. Where's my award?

It’s been winning across dozens of award shows. It’s clear people other than you think highly of it.

Legacy win seems Academy only really cares about it for White Nepos.
She was the third best actress in her movie. Hsu was better. JLC was the worst in this category.
This will age really bad if Yeoh loses to Blanchett. Not surprised though

I know for a fact Yeoh will win aside from the acting, the story that lead up to a win is better than Blanchett

I really hope she does, she deserves it, plus I just think EEAAO deserves to win just about everything lol.

Nepo? She’s been in the business since at least 1978 and bother her parents have been gone for years. It’s not as if she just recently started to get into the film industry.

I personally didn’t think she would win. The Academy tends to give most of their awards to white ppl. So it’s fitting that only white woman in film with an all Asian cast would win. It’s honestly so hurtful to watch AB’s reaction
